विजयादशमी बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत का दिन है, यह अन्याय पर न्याय की जीत का दिन है, लेकिन किसान आंदोलन के धरने का केंद्र दिल्ली-हरियाणा बॉर्डर से जो दर्दनाक तस्वीरें आईं वो अन्याय की ऐसी दास्तान है जो किसी को भी अंदर तक हिलाकर रख देगी। सिंघु बॉर्डर पर हैवानियत की सारी हदें पार कर दी गईं। किसानों के धरनास्थल पर निहंगों के एक समूह ने एक शख्स की काट-काट कर हत्या कर दी गई, उसका अंगभंग कर उसे पुलिस बैरिकेड पर लटका दिया गया। जिस शख्स की हत्या की गई उसका नाम लखबीर सिंह था। वह पंजाब के तरनतारन जिले का रहने वाला एक दैनिक वेतनभोगी मजदूर था और किसानों के धरनास्थल पर ही रहता था। लखबीर की हत्या के आरोप में पुलिस सरबजीत सिंह को गिरफ्तार किया है। प्रताड़ना देकर हत्या करने की इस बर्बर घटना से पिछले कई महीनों से चल रहे किसान आंदोलन एक बार फिर बदनाम हुआ है। इस अमानवीय और बर्बर कृत्य ने सारी हदें पार कर दी हैं।

यह घटना शुक्रवार तड़के 3.30 बजे के करीब हुई। निहंगों ने आरोप लगाया कि इस शख्स ने गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब की बेअदबी की थी इसलिए उसे सजा दी गई। लखबीर पर आरोप लगाया गया कि उसने पवित्र गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब की बेअदबी की इसलिए उसे ‘दंडित’ किया गया। उसका अंग भंग करके उसकी हत्या की गई। उसका दाहिना हाथ काट दिया गया और पांव की हड्डियां तोड़ दी गईं। यह सब उस मंच के पास हुआ जहां किसान नेता आम तौर पर बैठकर भाषण देते हैं। घटनास्थल पर मौजूद लोगों ने दर्द से कराहते इस शख्स का वीडियो तो बनाया लेकिन किसी ने उसकी जान बचाने की कोशिश नहीं की। किसी को उस पर रहम नहीं आया। अंगभंग करने के बाद उसे पुलिस बैरिकेड्स पर लटका दिया गया।

पुलिस को भी धरनास्थल पर घटना के चार घंटे बाद दाखिल होने की इजाजत दी गई। जब सोशल मीडिया पर इस बर्बर हत्याकांड के वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर वायरल होने लगे तब किसान नेताओं ने ऐलान किया कि इस बर्बर घटना से उनका कोई लेना-देना नहीं है।

जो वीडियो और तस्वीरे सामने आईं हैं वे दिल दहलाने वाली हैं। कलेजे को छलनी करनेवाली हैं। पहले लखबीर सिंह को पीटकर उसे अधमरा कर दिया गया। वो अपनी जान की भीख मांग रहा था लेकिन वहां मौजूद लोगों ने एक बात नहीं सुनी। 35 साल का यह शख्स अपनी आखिरी सांस तक गिड़गिड़ाता रहा लेकिन उसका हाथ काटकर अलग कर दिया गया, शरीर से खून निकलता रहा और फिर किसान आंदोलन के मंच के पास पुलिस बैरिकेड्स पर उल्टा लटका दिया गया।

ये बात सही है कि गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब की बेअदबी नहीं होनी चाहिए थी लेकिन ये भी सही है कि आरोपी की हत्या भी नहीं होनी चाहिए थी। उसे कानून के द्वारा दंडित किया जाना चाहिए थ। कुछ लोगों या फिर किसी समूह को कानून अपने हाथ में लेने की इजाजत नहीं दी जा सकती। जब लखबीर खून ज्यादा बह जाने के कारण होश खो बैठा तब कुछ लोगों ने उसके हाथ-पैर में रस्सी बांधी। वहां निहंगों द्वारा खुलेआम तलवारें लहराई गईं और धार्मिक नारे लगाए गए। पांव में रस्सी बांधकर उसे घसीटकर किसान आंदोलन के मंच के पास ले जाया गया। वहां उसे उल्टा लटकाया गया। कुछ देर बाद उसके शव को पुलिस बैरिकेड पर ले जाकर लटका दिया गया।

सिंघु बॉर्डर पर पांच किलोमीटर का इलाका ऐसा है जो किसानों के कब्जे में है। इस इलाके में किसानों का आंदोलन चल रहा है। यहां सुरक्षा के लिए किसान नेताओं ने खुद अपने वॉलेंटियर लगाए हुए हैं। उनका कहना है कि इस जगह पुलिस की कोई जरूरत नहीं क्योंकि धरना शांतिपूर्ण तरीके से चल रहा है। लॉ एंड ऑर्डर की कोई समस्या नहीं होगी। लेकिन इस बर्बर हत्या का वीडियो जब सर्कुलेट होने लगा तो सोनीपत पुलिस की एक टीम मौके पर पहुंची। लेकिन पुलिस की टीम को भी काफी देर तक घटनास्थल तक नहीं पहुंचने दिया गया। बड़ी मशक्कत के बाद पुलिस को घटनास्थल पर जाने दिया गया। पुलिस ने बैरिकेड से शव को उतारा और पोस्टमार्टम के लिए भेज दिया।

इंडिया टीवी के रिपोर्टर पवन नारा ने घटनास्थल पर मौजूद कुछ निहंगों से बात की। निहंगों का कहना था कि ये मामला सुबह साढे तीन बजे के आसपास का है। उस वक्त लखबीर सिंह पवित्र गुरु ग्रंथ साहब को उठाकर ले जा रहा था। उसने तलवार भी ली हुई थी। वो महाराज साहब की बेअदबी कर रहा था इसीलिए उसे पकड़कर निहंगों की फौज के हवाले कर दिया। एक निहंग ने बताया-‘हमने उसके हाथ से तलवार छीनी फिर उससे पवित्र ग्रंथ के बारे में पूछा, उसने वह जगह बताई और फिर पवित्र ग्रंथ को वहां से उठाया गया। इसके बाद उसे सजा दी गई।’

निहंगों का कहना था कि लखबीर के साथ जो कुछ हुआ उसका कोई अफसोस नहीं क्योंकि उसने पवित्र ग्रंथ के साथ बेअदबी की थी। एक निहंग ने कहा-‘हम उसे मंच के पीछे ले गए और उसका हाथ काट दिया।’ एक चश्मदीद ने कहा, ‘जब उसके शरीर से बहुत सारा खून बह गया तो उसकी मौत हो गई।’ एक निहंग ने कहा- ‘उसने हमारे पवित्र महाराज, उनके कपड़े और तलवार को अपवित्र किया। जो कोई भी फिर से ऐसा करने की हिम्मत करेगा उसका सिर काट दिया जाएगा।’

किसान नेता पिछले 10 महीने से यह दावा कर रहे हैं कि उनका आंदोलन शांतिपूर्ण तरीके से चल रहा है लेकिन उनके मंच के सामने इस तरह से एक शख्स की बर्बर हत्या से सवाल उठना स्वभाविक है, चाहे इस हत्या की वजह कुछ भी रही हो। किसान नेताओं को इन सवालों का जवाब देने की जरूरत है।

पुलिस द्वारा शव ले जाने के कुछ घंटे बाद संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा का बयान आया। बयान में कहा गया-‘संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा इस नृशंस हत्या की निंदा करते हुए यह स्पष्ट कर देना चाहता है कि इस घटना के दोनों पक्षों, इस निहंग समूह/ग्रुप या मृतक व्यक्ति, का संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा से कोई संबंध नहीं है। हम किसी भी धार्मिक ग्रंथ या प्रतीक की बेअदबी के खिलाफ हैं, लेकिन इस आधार पर किसी भी व्यक्ति या समूह को कानून अपने हाथ में लेने की इजाजत नहीं है। हम यह मांग करते हैं कि इस हत्या और बेअदबी के षड़यंत्र के आरोप की जांच कर दोषियों को कानून के मुताबिक सजा दी जाए। संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा किसी भी कानून सम्मत कार्यवाही में पुलिस और प्रशासन का सहयोग करेगा।’

ये तो किसान मोर्चा की तरफ से एक लिखित बयान था लेकिन जब किसान नेताओं ने प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस की तो इस घटना में उन्हें साजिश नजर आने लगी। संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा के नेता जगजीत सिंह डल्लेवाल ने कहा- ‘लगता है कि लखबीर सिंह को जानबूझकर किसी ने धार्मिक उन्माद पैदा करने के लिए भेजा था और इसके लिए उसे 30 हजार रुपए दिए गए।’ मृतक लखबीर सिंह पंजाब में तरनतारन के चीमाखुर्द गांव का रहनेवाला दलित युवक था। लखबीर का कोई आपराधिक इतिहास नहीं और किसी भी पॉलिटिकल पार्टी से भी कोई संबंध नहीं था। वह निहंग समूह के साथ सेवादार का काम करता था। डल्लेवाल ने बताया कि लखबीर कुछ दिन पहले धरना स्थल पर आया था। एक अन्य किसान नेता हन्नान मुल्ला ने आरोप लगाया कि ये सबकुछ किसान आंदोलन को बदनाम करने के लिए हो रहा है, यह एक साजिश है।

सिंघु बॉर्डर पर जो हुआ उसे कभी माफ नहीं किया जा सकता। किसी शख्स को सरेआम लटका देना, उसके हाथ काटना, पैर तोड़ना,तड़पा-तड़पा कर मार डालना..कोई धर्म, समाज या कोई कानून इसकी इजाजत नहीं देता। साथ ही अगर किसी शख्स ने पवित्र गुरु ग्रंथ साहिब का अपमान या बेअदबी की तो उसे किसी कीमत पर बर्दाश्त नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।

सही तरीका तो यह होता कि जिस शख्स ने पवित्र ग्रंथ के साथ बेअदबी की उसे पकड़कर पुलिस के हवाले किया जाना चाहिए था। लेकिन किसान आंदोलन में जो लोग धरने में बैठे हैं वो ना तो पुलिस को कुछ समझते हैं, ना किसी कानून को मानते हैं। वे लोग ना संसद, ना सरकार और ना सुप्रीम कोर्ट को मानते हैं, इसीलिए ऐसी घटनाएं होती हैं।

मुझे आश्चर्य है कि सिंघु बॉर्डर पर इतना बर्बर हत्याकांड हुआ। वहां बैठे लोगों ने किया और उसके वीडियो हैं, सारे सबूत हैं तो भी किसान नेता इसकी जिम्मेदारी लेने को तैयार नहीं हैं। वो कहते हैं कि पुलिस को एक्शन लेना चाहिए था। लेकिन सच ये है कि सिंघु बॉर्डर पर जहां किसान संगठन धरना दे रहे हैं वहां तो पुलिस की एंट्री बैन है। इतनी भयानक घटना होने के बाद भी पुलिस को वहां कई घंटे बाद आने दिया गया। वहां बाहर से कोई आ-जा नहीं सकता। तो फिर किसान संगठनों के नेता ये कैसे कह सकते हैं कि निहंग ग्रुप से या मरने वाले व्यक्ति से उनका कोई लेना देना नहीं है।

जिस जगह पर पूरी तरह से किसान संगठनों का कब्जा है वहां इस तरह की घटना कोई पहली बार नहीं हुई है। एक बार एक युवक को जिंदा जला दिया गया था। एक बार बलात्कार की घटना हुई थी। उस महिला की बाद में मौत भी हो गई थी। इसी जगह पर पुलिस के दो ASI पर हमला हुआ था। इसी जगह से लालकिले पर पहुंचे लोगों ने तलवार और फरसे चलाए थे और तिरंगे का अपमान किया था। अगर उस समय किसान नेता संभल जाते और उन घटनाओं को आंदोलन को बदनाम करने की साजिश बताकर दबाने की कोशिश ना की जाती तो आज इतनी भयानक घटना नहीं होती। तीन बच्चियों के सिर से उसके पिता का साया नहीं उठता। इस घटना से किसान आंदोलन की साख कम हुई है। अब किसान संगठनों के नेताओं को चाहिए कि वो पुलिस का सहयोग करें। ये नेता जानते हैं कि अपराधी कौन हैं, हत्यारे कौन हैं। उन्हें पुलिस को सौंप कर सजा दिलवाई जानी चाहिए।

On the day of Vijayadashami, when millions of Indians rejoiced the victory of good over evil, came a disturbing report from Delhi-Haryana border. A man was decapitated, tortured and then hanged on a police barricade by a Nihang group at the farmers’ protest site at Singhu border. The murdered man was Lakhbir Singh, a Dalit daily wager from Punjab’s Taran Taran district, who was staying at the farmers’ dharna site. Sonipat Police have arrested Sarabjit Singh on charge of killing Lakhbir.

This barbaric incident of torture and murder has brought a bad name to the ongoing farmers’ movement. This inhuman act has crossed all limits of decency.

The incident took place at around 3.30 am on Friday. A Nihang group alleged that Lakhbir was caught desecrating the Holy Guru Granth Sahib and he was “punished” for his act of sacrilege. His right hand was severed and the bones of his feet were broken. All this happened near the dais where farmer leaders normally sit and give speeches. People present at the site took videos of the man groaning with pain, even as blood flowed from his body on the ground. He was then hung on a police barricade. Not a single man came forward to help the victim.

Police was allowed to enter the protest site four hours after the torture took place. When videos of the torture and killing surfaced on social media, farmer leaders declared that this torture and killing had no connection with their protest.

The videos that have surfaced are heart-rending, and the images were macabre. Lakhbir was begging for his life but his torturers did not show an iota of mercy. It was disturbing to find the 35-year-old man begging for mercy, at a time when there was little life left in his body.

I agree that desecration of holy book is a sacrilege and those guilty of it must be punished, by law. Individuals or groups cannot be allowed to take law into their hands. When Lakhbir lost consciousness due to loss of blood, his hands and feet were tied, swords were brandished by Nihangs and religious slogans chanted. He was strung leg upwards near the dais. After some time, his body was taken to a police barricade and hung there.

Nearly five kilometre area at Singhu border is presently occupied by protesting farmers, who have deployed their own volunteers for security. Farmer leaders have been claiming that since they have arranged their own security, they do not need police for protection. When Sonipat police reached the spot after the videos of torture were circulated, they were not allowed to reach the spot initially. Police had a tough time in removing the body for post mortem.

India TV reporter Pawan Nara met some Nihang Sikhs at the spot, who told him that Lakhbir was found taking away the Holy Guru Granth Sahib and the ceremonial sword, when he was caught red handed, at around 3.30 am. He was handed over to the Nihang “army” for punishment. “We snatched the sword from his hand, asked him whether the Holy book was, he pointed to the place where he had thrown it, the Holy book was retrieved, and then he was given punishment”, said a Nihang.

The Nihang group said they had no remorse about torturing and killing the man who desecrated the Holy book. “We took him behind the dais and chopped his hand. He died when much blood drained away from his body”, an eyewitness said. “He desecrated our Holy Maharaj, His clothes and sword. Anybody who will dare to do such a thing again will have his head severed”, said a Nihang.

Farmer leaders have been claiming for the last ten months that their agitation was peaceful, but this torture and killing of a man, for reason whatsoever, near their dais raises pertinent questions. These questions need to be answered.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha, the farmers’ front, came with a statement, hours after the police took away the body. It said in a statement, “While condemning this brutal murder, the Morcha wants to clarify that neither the man who was killed nor the Nihang group have any connection with our movement. We are against desecration of any holy book or symbol, but no individual or group has the right to take law into its own hands. We demand that the matter of desecration and murder must be investigated and those guilty must be punished as per law. Samyukta Kisan Morcha will cooperate with the police and administration in any lawful action.”

The press statement was a guarded one, but when farmer leaders later spoke to the media, some of them alleged that it was part of a conspiracy to defame their movement. Farmer leader Jagjeet Singh Dallewal said, “Lakhbir Singh was deliberately sent by somebody to create communal tension, he was given Rs 30,000 for this”. Lakhbir Singh, a Dalit, hails from Cheema Khurd village of Taran Taran district. He has no criminal background nor was he connected with any political party. He was working as a sewadar with the Nihang group. Dallewal says, Lakhbir came to the protest site a few days ago.

Another farmer leader Hannan Mollah alleged that it seems to be part of a conspiracy to defame the movement. Whatever may be the assumptions, the brutal torture and killing of a man at the farmers’ protest site is an act that cannot be condoned. No religion, no law, no society can allow severing of hand and hanging of a man to death in public. At the same time, desecration of Holy Guru Granth Sahib must not be tolerated, at any cost.

The right course was: the man who desecrated the holy book should have been handed over to police for action under law. But those leaders sitting on protest neither respect any law nor the police. They have no faith in the Supreme Court, nor in the government, nor in Parliament. Such incidents are bound to happen when the leaders refuse to respect the judiciary, executive or legislature.

I am surprised that despite the brutal incident that took place at the farmers’ protest site at Singhu border, farmer leaders are unwilling to take any responsibility. They are now demanding police probe, but the ground reality is that they have themselves imposed ban on entry of police into the protest site. Outsiders are not free to enter the protest site. Then how can the farmer leaders claim that their agitation has no connection with this brutal killing.

This is not the first time that such an incident took place at a farmers’ protest site. There were incidents of a youth burnt alive and a woman was raped, who died later. Two ASIs of police were also attacked at protest site. It was from these protest sites that farmers had gone to Red Fort, brandished swords and insulted the national tricolour. Had the farmer leaders been alert after the Red Fort incident, such a brutal killing would not have happened. The image of farmers’ movement now lies in tatters. It is high time that the farmer leaders cooperate with the police. They know who the real killers are and who are the guilty. They should hand them over to the police.

महानवमी के मौके पर गुरुवार को देशभर के मंदिरों में पूरी श्रद्धा के साथ दुर्गा पूजा की गई। पूरे देश में उत्सव का माहौल रहा। दुनिया के हर उस हिस्से में जहां हिंदू रहते हैं मां दुर्गा की उपासना की गई। लेकिन उसी समय पड़ोसी मुल्क बांग्लादेश से परेशान करनेवाली खबरें आई जिसने दुनियाभर में मां दुर्गा के भक्तों की भावनाओं को ठेस पहुंचाई है। यहां उन्मादी भीड़ ने दुर्गा पूजा के पंडालों और हिंदू मंदिरों में तोड़फोड़ की। यह सब सोशल मीडिया पर फैलाई गई फर्जी खबरों की वजह से हुआ। दरअसल, सोशल मीडिया पर यह फर्जी खबर फैलाई गई कि कोमिला के पूजा पंडाल में पवित्र कुरान रखा पाया गया है। इसी के बाद धीरे-धीरे लोग जमा होने लगे और जगह-जगह से तोड़फोड़ की खबरें आने लगीं।

बांग्लादेश के आधिकारिक सूत्रों का कहना है कि करीब 23 मंदिरों और पूजा पंडालों को भीड़ ने निशाना बनाया और देवी-देवताओं की मूर्तियों को क्षतिग्रस्त कर दिया। पुलिस के साथ दंगाइयों की झड़प में कुल 4 लोगों की मौत हो गई जबकि 150 से ज्यादा लोग घायल हो गए। बार्डर गार्ड बांग्लादेश के अर्धसैनिक बलों को एहतियातन 22 जिलों में तैनात किया गया है। यह फोर्स मंदिरों और पूजा पंडालों के बाहर तैनात है। इसके साथ ही रैपिड एक्कशन बटालियन और सशस्त्र पुलिस बल को भी तैनात किया गया है।

बांग्लादेश की प्रधानमंत्री शेख हसीना ने गुरुवार को ढाकेश्वरी मंदिर के पूजा पंडाल में आयोजित एक कार्यक्रम को ऑनलाइन संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि मंदिरों और दुर्गा पूजा पंडालों पर हमला करने में शामिल किसी भी व्यक्ति को बख्शा नहीं जाएगा। शेख हसीना ने कहा-‘कोमिला में हुई घटना में शामिल लोगों में से किसी को भी नहीं बख्शा जाएगा। मामले की जांच की जाएगी और इससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता की हमलावर किस धर्म से ताल्लुक रखते हैं। उन्हें कड़ी कानूनी कार्रवाई का सामना करना पड़ेगा।’ उधर गृह मंत्री असदुज्जमां खान ने पुलिस के आला अधिकारियों, आईबी और बीजीबी अधिकारियों के साथ बैठक के बाद यह वादा किया कि कोमिला में सांप्रदायिक तनाव पैदा करने वाले सभी लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया जाएगा।

कोमिला पुलिस ने मोहम्मद फैज समेत कुल 41 दंगाइयों को गिरफ्तार किया है। मोहम्मद फैज ही वह शख्स है जिसने फेसबुक पर लाइव वीडियो का प्रसारण करते हुए आरोप लगाया था कि नानुआ दिघी में एक पूजा पंडाल में पवित्र कुरान की प्रति मिली है। मोहम्मद फैज को डिजिटल सुरक्षा कानून के तहत गिरफ्तार किया गया है। जैसे ही यह खबर सोशल मीडिया पर फैली, उन्मादी भीड़ बांग्लादेश के 22 जिलों में कई पूजा पंडालों में जमा हो गई और मूर्तियों को तोड़ना शुरू कर दिया। इस दौरान कई मंदिरों को भी निशाना बनाया गया।

चांदपुर के पास हाजीगंज में बुधवार की रात अश’अर की नमाज के बाद भीड़ ने लक्ष्मीनारायण ज्यू अखाड़ा (त्रिनयनी मंदिर), विवेकानंद विद्यापीठ मंदिर, और जमींदार बाड़ी और नगरपालिका श्मशान के पास पूजा पंडालों पर हमला किया और देवी-देवताओं की मूर्तियों को तोड़ दिया। इस दौरान इन दंगाइयों की पुलिस से झड़प भी हुई। पुलिस ने भीड़ को तितर बितर करने के लिए आंसू गैस के गोले दागे और फायरिंग भी की। इस घटना में चार लोगों की मौत हो गई। हालात की गंभीरता को देखते हुए धारा 144 लगा दी गई और बॉर्डर गार्ड्स को तैनात किया गया। इसके साथ ही मामले की जांच के लिए जिलाधिकारी की अगुवाई में एक पांच सस्यीय जांच समिति का भी गठन किया गया है। डीआईजी पुलिस चटगांव रेंज के साथ स्थानीय नेताओं ने दोनों समुदाय के नेताओं के साथ शांति बैठक की। इलाके में अभी भी हालात तनावपूर्ण हैं।

देखते ही देखते यह उपद्रव लामा तक फैल गया। यहां भारी भीड़ ने लामा हरि मंदिर के पूजा पंडाल में तोड़फोड़ की। उन्मादी भीड़ ने मूर्तियों और दुकानों को क्षतिग्रस्त कर दिया। पुलिस ने भीड़ को तितर-बितर करने के लिए आंसू गैस के गोले दागे और रबर की गोलियां चलाईं जिसमें 100 से ज्यादा लोग घायल हो गए। इस इलाके में सेना, बीजीबी, अंसार और सशस्त्र पुलिस बल को तैनात किया गया है।

कासिमपुर के पास गाजीपुर में गुरुवार की सुबह 30 मिनट के अंदर तीन मंदिरों पर हमले हुए और मूर्तियों को क्षतिग्रस्त कर दिया गया। यहां करीब 300 लोगों की भीड़ ने हमला किया था और पुलिस अबतक 20 दंगाइयों को गिरफ्तार कर चुकी है। रामगंज (लक्ष्मीगंज) में पांच मंदिरों पर हमला किया गया और उपद्रवियों ने 16 मूर्तियों को क्षतिग्रस्त कर दिया।

भीड़ के एक अन्य हमले में दंगाइयों ने रामगति नगरपालिका में श्री श्री रामठाकुरंगन मंदिर के पूजा पंडाल में तोड़फोड़ की और मूर्तियों को नुकसान पहुंचाया। यहां दंगाइयों को काबू करने के लिए पुलिस को आंसू गैस के गोले दागने पड़े, लाठीचार्ज और फायरिंग भी करनी पड़ी। यहां पुलिसकर्मियों समेत 15 लोग घायल हो गए। 250 से ज्यादा दंगाइयों पर मामला दर्ज किया गया है।

कुडीग्राम के पास उलीपुर में भीड़ ने सात मंदिरों में तोड़फोड़ की और आग लगा दी। यहां 18 दंगाइयों को गिरफ्तार किया गया। धीरे-धीरे यह हिंसा राजशाही भवानीगंज तक फैल गई जहां दंगों में 15 लोग घायल हो गए। कोमिला जिले के दाउदकंडी में भी एक पूजा पंडाल में तोड़फोड़ की गई।

पुलिस ने गुलाम मौला नाम के एक यूट्यूबर को गिरफ्तार किया है। इस शख्स पर जीएम सनी एचडी मीडिया के बैनर तले फेसबुक और यूट्यूब पर भड़काऊ पोस्ट और वीडियो पोस्ट करने का आरोप है।

इतना ही नहीं शरारती तत्वों ने फर्जी सोशल मीडिया पोस्ट के जरिए बांग्लादेश के पड़ोस में स्थित पश्चिम बंगाल में भी सांप्रदायिक तनाव फैलाने की कोशिश की, लेकिन प्रशासन के अलर्ट रहने की वजह से ये कोशिशें नाकाम हो गईं। शुभेंदु अधिकारी, राहुल सिन्हा समेत पश्चिम बंगाल के बीजेपी नेताओं ने तुरंत पार्टी के केंद्रीय नेतृत्व से संपर्क किया और प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी से तुरंत इस मामले में हस्तक्षेप करने का अनुरोध किया।

हाल के वर्षों में बांग्लादेश में इस्लामी कट्टवाद तेजी से पनपा है। बांग्लादेश के पुलिस अधिकारियों का कहना है कि शुरुआती जांच के बाद ऐसा लगता है कि हिंसा की पूरी प्लानिंग पहले से की गई थी। इसके पीछे जमात-ए-इस्लामी, हिफ़ाज़त-ए-इस्लाम और बेगम खालिदा ज़िया की बांग्लादेश नेशनलिस्ट पार्टी (बीएनपी) का हाथ लगता है। इन संगठनों के स्थानीय नेताओं ने माहौल बिगाड़ने के लिए अफवाह फैलाने का काम किया और पंडालों में अपने गुर्गों को भेजा।

पुलिस सूत्रों का कहना है कि इन तीनों संगठनों के समर्थक पूजा पंडालों के बाहर बड़ी संख्या में इकट्ठा हुए और तोड़फोड़ करने लगे। पुलिस सूत्र इस बात की ओर भी इशारा करते हैं कि जबसे अफगानिस्तान में तालिबान की हुकूमत आई, तभी से बांग्लादेश में जमात-ए-इस्लामी ने दोबारा पैर पसारने शुरू कर दिए। चूंकि ये संगठन कट्टरवाद की वजह से बांग्लादेश में प्रतिबंधित है तो इसने हिफाजत-ए-इस्लाम नाम से नया फ्रंट खोला और फिर अल्पसंख्यकों को टारगेट करना शुरू कर दिया। इन लोगों ने एक नया नारा दिया, ‘बांग्लादेश बनेगा अफगानिस्तान’। बांग्लादेश हिंदू एकता काउंसिल का कहना है कि जिस वक्त दुर्गा पंडालों की मूर्तियां तैयार हो रही थी तभी से इन लोगों ने प्रतिमाओं के अपमान का सिलसिला शुरू कर दिया था। इसी तरह के जिहादी तत्वों ने ढाका में मां दुर्गा की शोभा यात्रा को भी रोक दिया था।

गुरुवार को जो कुछ भी हुआ उसे लेकर बांग्लादेश के हिंदुओं में डर और खौफ का माहौल है। बांग्लादेश की सत्ताधारी आवामी लीग पार्टी के महासचिव और सड़क परिवहन मंत्री उबैदुल कादरी ने हिंदुओं से मुलाकात की और उनके बीच जाकर कहा कि डरने की जरूरत नहीं है। दुर्गा पूजा शांतिपूर्वक मनाने की अनुमति दी जाएगी। कुछ लोग गड़ब़ड़ी कर साम्प्रदायिक नफरत फैलाने की फिराक में थे। लेकिन सरकार ऐसे लोगों से सख्ती से निपट रही है। भारत का विदेश मंत्रालय भी ढाका में अपने दूतावास के माध्यम से बांग्लादेश की सरकार और वहां के प्रशासन के साथ लगातार संपर्क में है।

बांग्लादेश में मां दुर्गा के अपमान से, देवी की प्रतिमाओं को खंडित किए जाने से हमारे यहां जितनी नाराजगी है उससे ज्यादा गुस्सा बांग्लादेश में रहने वाले हिंदुओं में है। बांग्लादेश में अभी हिंदुओं की तादाद करीब डेढ़ करोड़ है। फिलहाल, बांग्लादेश की सरकार ने पूजा पंडालों में की गई तोड़फोड़ से जुड़ी सारी खबरें दिखाने पर पांबदी लगा दी है।

सरकार ने आदेश दिया है कि मां दुर्गा की खंडित प्रतिमाएं और हिंदू मंदिरों में हुई हिंसा की तस्वीरें मीडिया में न दिखाई जाएं क्योंकि इससे लोगों की भावनाएं आहत हो सकती है और कट्टरपंथी संगठनों को लोगों को भड़काने का मौका मिल सकता है । लेकिन इस बात को भी समझने की जरूरत है कि इसके पीछे वो जिहादी तंजीमें हैं जो कहती हैं कि बांग्लादेश को अफगानिस्तान बनाएंगे। यह एक सच्चाई है कि अफगानिस्तान में तालिबान की सरकार बनने के बाद कई मुल्कों में कट्टरपंथी ताकतें फिर से मज़बूत हुई हैं। बांग्लादेश में भी कट्टरपंथी संगठन जमात-ए-इस्लामी ने नाम बदलकर अल्पसंख्यकों को टारगेट करना शुरू किया है। अल्पसंख्यकों पर हमले और टारगेट किलिंग पिछले दिनों हमारे यहां कश्मीर में भी हुई है। यहां इस्लामी अलगाववादियों ने अल्पसंखकों को निशाना बनाना शुरू कर दिया।

पूरी दुनिया को एक होकर इस तालिबानी मानसिकता से लड़ना होगा और दहशतगर्दी करने वालों को इस बात का एहसास कराना होगा कि खून खराबा और हिंसा करने से उन्हें कुछ हासिल नहीं होगा। आज बड़ी संख्या में ऐसे मौलाना, मौलवी और उलेमा हैं जो इस बात को समझते हैं कि आपसी टकराव से एक दूसरे की जान लेने से कोई रास्ता नहीं निकलेगा। इसका एक उदाहरण जम्मू कश्मीर में मिला जहां कश्मीर के ग्रैंड मुफ्ती ने टारगेट किलिंग के डर में जी रहे हिंदुओं और सिखों से घाटी नहीं छोड़ने की अपील की है।

During the festive time when Hindus across the world were busy celebrating Durga Mahanavami on Thursday, came disturbing reports from neighbouring Bangladesh, where frenzied mobs vandalized Durga Puja pandals and Hindu temples after a fake news was spread on social media about the Holy Quran being found at a Puja pandal in Comilla.

Official sources in Bangladesh said, nearly 23 temples and puja pandals were attacked by mobs and idols of goddesses were damaged, leading to clashes between police and rioters, resulting in four deaths and injuries to more than 150 people. Border Guard Bangladesh paramilitary force has been deployed outside temples and Puja pandals in 22 districts as a preventive measure. Rapid Action Battalion and armed police have also been deployed.

Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in a video speech to Hindu devotees assembled at Dhakeshwari Jatiyo Mandir puja pandal on Thursday, vowed to take strong action against mischief makers. “Nobody will be spared in the incident that happened in Comilla. The matter will be probed and mischief makers, whichsoever religion they belong to, will have to face the full force of law”, Sheikh Hasina said. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, after a meeting with top police, IB and BGB officials, promised to round up all those who triggered communal tension in Comilla.

Comilla police have arrested Mohammed Faiz along with 41 other rioters. Mohammed Faiz had carried out a live video screening on Facebook alleging that a copy of Holy Quran was found at a puja pandal in Nanua Dighi. Mohd. Faiz has been arrested under Digital Security law. As this fake news spread on social media, communally frenzied mobs congregated at several puja pandals in 22 districts across Bangladesh and started vandalizing temples and idols.

In Hajiganj near Chandpur, on Wednesday night, after Ash’aar namaaz prayers, mobs attacked Laxminarayan Jeu Akhaada (Trinayani temple), Vivekanand Vidyapeeth temple, and puja pandals at Zamindar Baadi and near municipal crematorium, and broke idols of goddesses. During clashes, police used tear gas and resorted to firing in which four rioters were killed. Section 144 prohibitory orders have been clamped, border guards have been deployed and a 5-member probe committee led by the district magistrate has been formed. Local politicians along with DIG Chittagong range held peace meetings with both community leaders and the situation continues to be tense.

The disturbance soon spread to Lama, where a huge mob vandalized the Lama Hari Mandir temple puja pandal, and damaged idols and shops. More than 100 people were injured, when police fired teargas shells and rubber bullets. Army, BGB, Ansar and armed police have been deployed in the area.

In Ghazipur near Kasimpur, three temples were attacked and idols were destroyed within a span of 30 minutes on Thursday morning. The mob was 300 strong, and police have so far arrested 20 rioters. Five temples were attacked in Ramganj (Lakhmiganj) and the miscreants damaged 16 idols.

In another mob attack, rioters damaged idols at Sri Sri Ramthakurangan Mandir puja pandal in Ramgati municipality. Police had to resort to teargas, lathicharge and firing to quell the rioters. 15 people including policemen were injured, and more than 250 rioters have been booked.

In Ulipur near Kudigram, seven temples were vandalized and set on fire by mobs. 18 rioters were arrested. Violence spread to Bhabaniganj in Rajshahi, where 15 people were injured in riots. A puja pandal in Daudkandi in Comilla district was also vandalized.

A YouTuber Gholam Mowlah was arrested for posting inflammatory posters and videos on Facebook and YouTube under the banner of GM Sunny HD Media.

Mischief makers also tried to spread communal tension in neighbouring West Bengal through fake social media posts, but their attempts were nipped in the bud by the alert administration. West Bengal BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari and Rahul Sinha, immediately contacted party central leadership, and requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.

There has been a significant rise in Islamic fundamentalism in Bangladesh in recent years. Local police officials in Bangladesh say that Thursday’s communal violence appears to be an orchestrated one, with support from Jamaat-e-Islami, Hifazat-e-Islam and Begum Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Police sources say, supporters of these three outfits assembled outside puja pandals and started vandalizing. They also point out to the fact that three months ago, when Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan, the banned Jamaat-e-Islami set up a new front called Hifazat-e-Islam and started targeting minorities. This outfit has given a new slogan, ‘Bangladesh will become Afghanistan’. Bangladesh Hindu Unity Council has alleged that these elements started desecration of Durga Puja idols, even when they were being made in potter workshops. A procession carrying Durga Puja idols was prevented by such jihadi elements in Dhaka.

The Hindu community in Bangladesh is presently in a state of shock. Ruling Awami League general secretary and Bangladesh road transport minister Obaidul Quader met Hindus and promised that they would be allowed to celebrate the Durga Puja festival peacefully. He appealed to them not to be afraid of mischievous elements who are trying to spread communal hatred. India’s Ministry of External Affairs is in constant touch with Bangladeshi counterparts through its embassy in Dhaka.

The desecration of Maa Durga idols during Puja in Bangladesh has not only caused consternation among more than a billion Hindus living in India, but has left a deep scar on the minds of nearly 1.5 crore Hindus living in fear in the neighbouring country. For the moment, Bangladesh government, in order to stem communal frenzy, has prohibited dissemination of news and images relating to violence at Puja pandals.

The objective behind this order is to ensure that the feelings of Hindus are not hurt and radical outfits should not get chance to rake up tension. But we have to understand that forces that are behind these acts of vandalization are those who have announced that they intend to make Bangladesh as another Afghanistan. It is a fact that Islamic fundamentalist forces are on the rise after Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan in August this year. While the Jamaat-e-Islami is active under another name in Bangladesh, Islamic separatists in Kashmir have started targeting minorities in the Valley.

The entire world must join hands to counter Islamic fundamentalism which gives birth to Taliban mentality. Terrorists must be made to realize that vandalization and bloodbath will get them nowhere. In the midst of this gloom, has come a good message from the Grand Mufti of Kashmir who has issued an appeal to all Hindus and Sikhs not to leave the Valley because of targeted killings by terrorists.

पंजाब के सीमावर्ती इलाकों से बेहद सनसनीखेज और चौंकानेवाली रिपोर्ट आई है। इन इलाकों में मिशनरियों द्वारा सिख युवकों को बहला फुसला कर, लालच देकर उनका धर्म बदलवाने की कोशिश की जा रही है। उन्हें सिख से क्रिश्चियन बनाने का अभियान चलाया जा रहा है। धर्मांतरण का यह अभियान खासकर पंजाब के उन इलाकों में चलाया जा रहा है जो पाकिस्तान बॉर्डर से जुड़े हुए हैं। बटाला, गुरदासपुर, जालंधर, लुधियाना, फतेहगढ़ चूड़ियां, डेरा बाबा नानक, मजीठा, अजनाला और अमृतसर के ग्रामीण इलाकों से ऐसी खबरें आई हैं। श्री अकाल तख्त के कार्यवाहक जत्थेदार ज्ञानी हरप्रीत सिंह ने आरोप लगाया है कि ईसाई मिशनरी गरीब सिख युवकों को लालच देकर उनका धर्मातरण करवा रही है।

कुछ मामलों में तो इन सिख युवकों को पैसे और अन्य चीजों जैसे अमेरिका, कनाडा के वीजा का लालच भी दिया जा रहा है। शिरोमणि गुरुद्वारा प्रबंधक कमेटी की अध्यक्ष बीबी जागीर कौर ने मिशनरी के इस अभियान का जवाब देने के लिए सिख प्रचारकों और उपदेशकों की करीब 150 टीमों को भेजा है। इस टीम का मकसद सिख युवाओं को धर्म परिवर्तन नहीं करने के लिए उन्हें समझाने की कोशिश करना है। इस टीम के लोग गांव-गांव जाकर सिख धर्म के महत्व बात रहे हैं ताकि किसी तरह की धर्मांतरण की कोशिशों का मुकाबला किया जा सके। हर टीम में सात प्रचारक हैं और उन्हें पंजाब के माझा, मालवा और दोआबा वाले इलाकों में भेजा गया है। एजीपीसी ने इस अभियान का नाम ‘घर घर अंदर धर्मसाल’ दिया है। जिसका मतलब है ‘हर घर के अंदर एक पवित्र मंदिर’।

बीबी जागीर कौर ने कहा –‘हमारे प्रचारकों की टीम हर गांव में एक सप्ताह तक रहती है, वे सिख संगत को गुरबानी, सिख ‘रेहत मर्यादा’ (आचार संहिता), सिख इतिहास और धार्मिक सिद्धांतों के पाठ के लिए उन्हें बुलाते हैं। लोगों को धर्मांतरण से रोकने के लिए सिख धर्म पर मुफ्त धार्मिक साहित्य बांटे जाते हैं।”

ईसाई धर्म में धर्मांतरण के बढ़ते मामलों ने सिख धर्मगुरुओं और बुद्धिजीवियों के बीच चिंता पैदा कर दी है। ईसाई प्रचारकों की ‘प्रार्थना सभा’ का मुकाबला करने के लिए, सिख प्रचारक हर शाम गुरुद्वारों के अंदर बच्चों को बुलाकर उन्हें गुरबानी का सही उच्चारण के साथ पाठ सिखाने के साथ ही सिख धर्म के बारे में जागरूकता पैदा करने का काम करते हैं। इस अभियान का समापन ‘अमृत संचार’ (दीक्षा संस्कार) के साथ होता है।

ईसाई मिशनरी के लोग पाकिस्तान की सीमा से लगे पंजाब के ग्रामीण इलाकों में बसों से जाते हैं और वहां वे अपने धर्म को फैलाने की कोशिश करते हैं। उनका ध्यान ज्यादातर दलित मजहबी सिखों पर रहता है और उन्हें धर्मांतरण के लिए प्रलोभन देते हैं। मिशनरी के लोग गांवों में मीटिंग करते हैं और दलित मजहबी सिख युवाओं को धर्म परिवर्तन के लिए प्रेरित करते हैं। इतना ही नहीं युवाओं को लालच भी दिया जाता है। उन्हें अमेरिका और कनाडा जैसे विकसित देशों में अच्छा जीवन जीने का प्रोलभन दिया जाता है। सोशल मीडिया पर इस तरह के वीडियो सर्कुलेट हो रहे हैं जिसमें ज्यादातर बार्डर इलाकों में सिख युवाओं का धर्मांतरण करने की कोशिश की जा रही है। बॉर्डर इलाकों में चल रही इस गतिविधि से स्वाभाविक तौर पर राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा को लेकर चिंताएं बढ़ गई हैं।

बुधवार की रात अपने प्राइम टाइम शो ‘आज की बात’ में हमने आपको अकाली दल नेता मनजिंदर सिंह सिरसा द्वारा भेजा गया वीडियो दिखाया। यह वीडियो लुधियाना जिले के गांव का हैं। यहां सिख बुजुर्गों ने ईसाई प्रचारकों की एक टीम को गांव छोड़ने के लिए कहा। मिशनरी के लोग घर-घर जाकर लोगों से धर्म बदलने के लिए कह रहे थे। गांव के बुजुर्ग सिखों ने मिशनरी के लोगों से कहा कि पंजाब दसवें बादशाह की भूमि है और उन्हें यहां ईसाई धर्म का प्रचार करने की जरूरत नहीं है।

हमारे रिपोर्टर पुनीत परिंजा ने धनूर गांव के एक स्थानीय सिख नेता गुरमेल सिंह बात की और उनसे वीडियो की सच्चाई के बारे में पूछा। गुरमेल सिंह ने कहा- करीब 10 से 15 दिन पहले 25 से 30 ईसाई प्रचारक गांव में आए और पर्चे बांटने लगे, जिसमें लिखा था, ‘हमारे साथ जुड़ें, हम आपको भगवान के रास्ते पर ले जाएंगे’। गांव के कुछ लोगों ने हमारे रिपोर्टर को बताया कि मिशनरी के लोग ईसाई धर्म अपनाने के लिए नौकरी और पैसे का ऑफर दे रहे थे।

अकाली दल के नेता मनजिंदर सिंह सिरसा ने इंडिया टीवी को बताया कि मिशनरी के लोगों ने सिख युवकों को वीजा का इंतजाम और उन्हें अमेरिका या कनाडा में बसाने की पेशकश कर उन्हें लुभाने की कोशिश की। उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि ऐसे प्रचारक पंजाब के कई जिलों में सक्रिय हैं। श्री अकाल तख्त के जत्थेदार ज्ञानी हरप्रीत सिंह ने कहा, ‘जो कुछ भी हो रहा है वह सिख धर्म पर हमला है। चर्च के मिशनरी लोगों को गुमराह कर रहे हैं और प्रलोभन दे रहे हैं। यह एक बड़ा खतरा है। सिख समाज को आगे आना चाहिए और इस खतरे से पूरी ताकत से लड़ना चाहिए।’

हमारे रिपोर्टर ने पंजाब पुलिस के सीनियर अधिकारियों को यह वीडियो दिखाया। डीएसपी रैंक के एक अधिकारी ने कहा कि उन्हें अब तक जबरन धर्म परिवर्तन की कोई शिकायत नहीं मिली है, लेकिन अब जब ये वीडियो सामने आया है, तो पुलिस गांववालों से बात करेगी और इस मामले की जांच करेगी।

एसजीपीसी प्रमुख बीबी जागीर कौर ने इंडिया टीवी से कहा कि जो लोग सिखों को अपना धर्म अपनाने को लेकर भ्रम फैला रहे हैं, उन्हें मालूम होना चाहिए कि सिख धर्म की जड़ें बहुत गहरी हैं। हमारा धर्म इतना मज़बूत है कि कोई भी इस पर अपना प्रभाव नहीं डाल सकता। किसी भी धर्म का साया यहां नहीं पड़ सकता। उन्होंने कहा कि किसी भी तरह के प्रलोभन या लालच से धर्मांतरण में मदद नहीं मिलेगी।

बीबी जागीर कौर ने कहा, ‘हमारा किसी से कोई मुकाबला नहीं है और हमें किसी का डर नहीं है। हमारा धर्म इतना मज़बूत है कि कोई भी इस पर अपना प्रभाव नहीं डाल सकता। किसी भी धर्म का साया यहां नहीं पड़ सकता। हमें अपना काम करना है। हमारा अपना फर्ज है कि हम अपने लोगों के बीच सिख धर्म के सिद्धांतों को फैलाने के लिए अपने स्वयं के अभियान को जारी रखेंगे। अगर कोई कमज़ोर व्यक्ति होगा तो फिर वो किसी लालच के वास्ते किसी और धर्म में जा सकता है। सिख कभी भी अपना धर्म परिवर्तन नहीं कर सकता। जिन लोगों ने धर्म परिवर्तन किया है मैं उन्हें सिख ही नहीं मानती। उसकी सोच सिख की नहीं हो सकती। उसका कोई सिद्धांत नहीं हो सकता। सिख कभी बहक नहीं सकता। जो सिख होता है वो अपने धर्म पर कभी आंच नहीं आने देता। सिखों को बचपन से ही धर्म की खातिर सर्वोच्च बलिदान देना सिखाया जाता है।’

हमने ईसाई मिशनरी का भी पक्ष जानना चाहा और चर्च ऑफ नॉर्थ इंडिया के रेवरेंड सुनील सोलोमन से इस संबंध में पूछा तो उन्होंने कहा- ‘हमारे प्रचारक ईसा मसीह के बताए रास्ते पर चलते हुए प्यार से लोगों को अपने धर्म के बारे में बताते हैं। हम जबरन धर्मांतरण के खिलाफ हैं। अब यह लोगों पर निर्भर है कि वे किस धर्म को चुनना चाहते हैं।’

जब मैंने पंजाब के सीमावर्ती इलाकों में सक्रिय ईसाई मिशनरियों के बारे में रिपोर्ट पढ़ी तो मुझे हैरत हुई। क्रिश्चियन मिशनरी सिख समाज के लोगों को कनवर्ट करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। क्या वो नहीं जानते कि सिख समाज का इतिहास अपने धर्म की रक्षा के लिए बलिदान की गाथाओं से भरा पड़ा है।

क्या उन्हें नहीं मालूम कि गुरु तेग बहादुर ने कश्मीरी पंडितों को कन्वर्जन से बचाने के लिए तलवार उठाई थी। गुरु तेग बहादुर ने इस्लाम कबूल करने से इनकार कर दिया था और हंसते-हंसते कुर्बान हो गए थे। गुरु गोविंद सिंह के बहादुर बेटों ने भी इस्लाम कबूल करने से इनकार किया तो उन्हें दीवार में चिनवा दिया गया। धर्म की रक्षा के लिए उन्होंने अपनी जान न्योछावर कर दी। अगर ईसाई मिशनरियों ने सिखों के बलिदान का इतिहास पढ़ा होता तो शायद वो कभी ऐसी कोशिश नहीं करते।

दूसरी बात ये कि सिख समाज में सेवा की भावना कूट कूट कर भरी है। कोई भूखा ना सोए इसलिए गुरुद्वारों में लंगर चलते हैं। चाहे प्राकृतिक आपदा हो या फिर मानवजनित घटनाएं, सिख समाज के लोगों को भोजन मुहैया कराने के लिए सबसे आगे रहते हैं। हर गरीब के इलाज का, पढ़ाई का, दवाई का मुफ्त इंतजाम किया जाता है। इसीलिए मुझे ये देखकर हैरानी हुई कि दूरदराज गांवो में रहने वाले सिखों को लालच देकर उनका धर्म परिवर्तन कराने की कोशिश की गई।

हालांकि ये सही है कि पंजाब के नौजवानों में कनाडा और अमेरिका जाकर काम करने का और वहां बसने का बहुत क्रेज़ है। वहां का वीजा मिलना, नौकरी मिलना बहुत मुश्किल हो गया है। ये ऐसा लालच है जो कुछ लोगों को क्रिश्चन बनने के लिए ललचा सकता है लेकिन मुझे यकीन है कि अब एसजीपीसी अलर्ट है। जत्थेदार और सिख साहेबान मैदान में उतर गए हैं। क्रिश्चियन मिशनरी का ये मिशन सफल नहीं हो पाएगा। सिख धर्म में गुरु नानक देव की वाणी में इतनी शक्ति है कि भूले-भटकों को भी घर वापस ले आती है। सिख समाज ने देश की रक्षा के लिए जो बलिदान दिए हैं उसके लिए देश हमेशा-हमेशा उनका ऋणी है।

Reports about conversion of Sikh youths to Christianity by missionaries in the border areas of Punjab are disturbing. Most of these conversions have been reported from rural and border areas of Punjab like Batala, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Churian, Dera Baba Nanak, Majitha, Ajnala and Amritsar. The officiating Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh has alleged that Christian missionaries have been carrying out conversions in these belts by luring poor Sikh youths.

In some cases, Sikh youths have been offered money and other allurements like visas for US and Canada. The president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Bibi Jagir Kaur has launched a counter-drive by sending nearly 150 teams of Sikh preachers, who are trying to convince Sikh youths not to convert to other religions. There are seven preachers in each team and they have been sent to Majha, Malwa and Doaba regions of Punjab. The SGPC drive is named ‘Ghar Ghar Andar Dharamsaal’, which means ‘sacred shrine inside every home’.

Bibi Jagir Kaur has said, “our teams of preachers stay for a week in each village, they invite the Sikh Sangat to recitation of Gurbani, Sikh ‘rehat maryada’ (code of conduct), Sikh history and religious principles. Free religious literature on Sikhism is distributed to people to stop them from converting to other religions.”

Rising rate of conversions to Christianity has justifiably caused alarm among the Sikh clergy and intellectuals. To counter ‘prayer meetings’ by Christian evangelists, Sikh preachers assemble children inside gurudwaras every evening to teach them the correct recitation of Gurbani (religious hymns) and to create awareness about Sikh religion. The campaign concludes with ‘amrit sanchar’ (initiation rites) on the last day.

Christian missionaries are travelling in buses mostly in rural areas of Punjab bordering Pakistan, where they try to spread the gospel. They mostly concentrate on Dalit Mazhabi Sikhs and offer inducements for converting to Christianity. They conduct meetings in villages and induce Dalit Mazhabi Sikh youths to convert and enjoy a good life in developed countries like the US and Canada. Videos are being circulated on social media on how evangelists are trying to convert these Sikh youths, mostly in border areas. This has naturally raised concerns about national security.

In my prime time show ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ on Wednesday night, we showed a video sent by Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa. The video showed a village in Ludhiana district, where Sikh elderly persons confronted a team of Christian evangelists and asked them to leave the village. The missionaries were moving from house to house and asking people to convert. The elderly Sikhs in the village told the missionaries that Punjab is the land of the Tenth Badshah, and they need not spread the word of Christianity here.

Our correspondent Punit Parinja met a local Sikh leader Gurmail Singh of Dhanoor village, and asked him about the authenticity of the video. Gurmail Singh said, nearly 10 to 15 days ago, 25 to 30 Christian evangelists came to the village and started distributing pamphlets which stated, ‘Join us, we will take you on the path to God’. Some villagers told our reporter that the missionaries were offering jobs and money for converting to Christianity.

Akali leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa told India TV that missionaries have tried to lure Sikh youths by offering to arrange visas and get them settled in the US or Canada. He alleged that such evangelists are active in several districts of Punjab. The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh said, “whatever is happening amounts to an attack on Sikh religion. Missionaries of Church are misguiding people and offering inducements. This is a big danger and Sikh samaj should come forward and fight this menace with full might.”

Our reporter showed the video to senior Punjab police officers. One police officer of DSP rank said, till now, they have not received any complaint about forced conversion from anybody, but since the video has surfaced, police would speak to villagers and probe the matter.

SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur told India TV that those who are harbouring illusions about converting Sikhs to their religion, should know that the roots of Sikh religion run very deep. Any amount of inducements will not help in religious conversions, she added.

Bibi Jagir Kaur said, “we are not in competition with any other religion, nor do we fear anybody. Sikh religion is so strong that no amount of inducements will succeed. We are not afraid of evangelists. We will continue with our own drive for spreading the tenets of Sikh religion among our people. Only people who are mentally weak will agree to convert to another religion. I do not consider those who have converted as true Sikhs. A true Sikh can never be misguided nor can he convert to another religion because of inducements. Sikhs are taught since childhood to offer supreme sacrifice for the sake of religion.”

We sought reaction from Rev. Sunil Solomon from the Church of North India. He said, “our evangelists spread the message of love and Christ’s teachings among the people. We are against forced conversions. It is up to the people to decide which religion they want to choose.”

I was surprised when I read reports about Christian missionaries active in the sensitive border areas of Punjab. They should know that Sikhs are a martial race and they have a long history of offering supreme sacrifice for the sake of defending their religion.

The history of Sikhs is replete with stories of supreme sacrifices and bravery of the Gurus and their disciples. These evangelists must know that it was Guru Teg Bahadur who took up the sword against Mughal rulers to save Kashmiri Pandits from being forcibly converted to Islam. The Guru himself refused to be converted to Islam and offered supreme sacrifice. The brave sons of Guru Govind Singh refused to be converted to Islam, and opted for martyrdom. Had the Christian evangelists read the history of Sikhs, they would not have ventured to convert people in Punjab.

The second point is that, Sikhs have a long history of community service. During calamities, both natural and manmade, Sikhs are the first to come forward to set up community kitchens (langars) to offer food to the needy. The very essence of organizing ‘langar’ in all Sikh gurudwaras is that nobody must sleep on an empty stomach. The gurudwaras offer free medicines, treatment and education to the poor.

It is, however, a fact that there is a craze among Sikh youths to opt for better living and they yearn for visas to go to the US, UK or Canada. By dangling inducements like arranging visas, the evangelists may be luring some of the youths to convert, but the Sikh community has now become alert, after the Jathedar of Akal Takht and the SGPC chief have sounded the alarm. The missionaries will not succeed in their aim. The teachings of Guru Nanak have been guiding the Sikhs for several centuries. The nation remains indebted to the Sikh community, which has given supreme sacrifices for defending India.

कश्मीर से मंगलवार को दो बड़ी खबरें आई। पहली ये कि अफगनिस्तान में तालिबान की सरकार बनवाने के बाद पाकिस्तान का फोकस जम्मू-कश्मीर में दहशतगर्दी तेज करने पर है। इस बात के सबूत मिले हैं कि पाकिस्तान की इंटेलिजेंस एजेंसी ISI अब कश्मीर में आतंक फैलाने के लिए अफगानिस्तान के टेररिस्ट ग्रुप्स की मदद ले रही है। पाकिस्तान से ऑपरेट करने वाले आतंकी संगठन अब ISIS के नाम पर कश्मीर में आतंकी वारदातों को अंजाम दे रहे हैं। पिछले हफ्ते श्रीनगर में रहने वाले बिहार के स्ट्रीट वेंडर वीरेंद्र पासवान की हत्या हुई जिसका वीडियो पाकिस्तान की ISI ने सोशल मीडिया पर अपलोड कराया और ये दिखाने की कोशिश की कि इसके पीछे ISIS का हाथ है। वीरेंद्र पासवान की हत्या उसी दिन की गई जिस दिन आतंकियों ने कश्मीरी पंडित व्यवसायी माखन लाल बिंद्रू की हत्या उनकी दवा दुकान के अंदर कर दी थी।

कश्मीर से दूसरी बड़ी खबर ये है कि हमारी सिक्युरिटी फोर्स ने जबरदस्त एक्शन लिया है। पिछले 30 घंटे में 7 आतंकियों को मार गिराया। इनमें से 2 आतंकी वो हैं जिन्होंने सिविलियंस की हत्या की थी। सिक्योरिटी फोर्सेज ने उन टेररिस्ट्स को भी आइडेंटिफाई कर लिया है जिन्होंने कश्मीरी पंडित माखन लाल बिंद्रू, दीपक चंद और सिख प्रिंसिपल सुपिंदर कौर की हत्या की थी। जिस दिन आतंकियों ने माखन लाल बिंद्रू की हत्या की थी उस दिन जम्मू-कश्मीर के एलजी मनोज सिन्हा ने ‘आज की बात’ में मुझसे बात करते हुए ये भरोसा दिलाया था कि घाटी में माइनॉरिटीज ही हत्या करने वालों का जल्द ही हिसाब कर दिया जाएगा। एक आतंकी को तो उसके किए की सज़ा दी जा चुकी है बाकी टेररिस्ट्स की भी पहचान हो गई है और किसी भी वक्त उन्हें भी ढेर किया जा सकता है।

सिक्योरिटी फोर्सेस ने कश्मीर में हुई टारगेट किलिंग्स को अंजाम देने वाले चेहरों की और उसके मास्टरमाइंड की पहचान कर ली है। पता चला है कि इन सारी हत्याओं के पीछे बासित अहमद डार नाम का आतंकवादी है। बासित साउथ कश्मीर के कुलगाम का रहनेवाला है और ये पिछले साल अप्रैल में अपने घर से गायब हो गया था। फिर वो लश्कर के एक शैडो आउटफिट द रजिस्टेंस फोर्स (TRF) के साथ जुड़ गया। बासित ने सबसे पहले लश्कर के ही अब्बास शेख नाम के टेररिस्ट को फॉलो किया, उसके ऑर्डर पर किलिंग्स करने लगा लेकिन अब्बास शेख की मौत के बाद बासित अहमद डार ने खुद को TRF का चीफ डिक्लेयर कर दिया।

पिछले हफ्ते जिन पांच लोगों की हत्या हुई उसमें बासित और उसके ग्रुप का ही हाथ है। बासित अहमद डार के साथ मेहरान शल्ला और आदिल नाम के आतंकवादी भी मौजूद थे। इनके साथ एक चौथा दहशतगर्द भी शामिल था। इनके अलावा दो और दहशतगर्द जो इन हत्या में शामिल थे उन्हें मार गिराया गया है। मैं आपको याद दिला दूं कि पांच अक्टूबर को श्रीनगर और बांदीपोरा में तीन सिविलियंस की हत्या की गई थी। पहले कश्मीरी पंडित कम्युनिटी के मशहूर केमिस्ट माखन लाल बिंद्रू को टारगेट किया गया था। इसके बाद पानीपुरी बेचने वाले वीरेंद्र पासवान और फिर बांदीपोरा में टैक्सी स्टैंड के अध्यक्ष मोहम्मद शफी लोन को भी गोली मारी गई थी। इसके दो दिन बाद आतंकवादियों ने श्रीनगर में स्कूल की प्रिंसिपल सुपिंदर कौर और एक कश्मीरी पंडित टीचर की भी टारगेट किलिंग की थी।

पिछले 30 घंटे में अनंतनाग और बांदीपोरा में दो आतंकी मारे गए जबकि 5 दहशतगर्द शोपियां में ढेर कर दिए गए। साउथ कश्मीर के शोपियां में दो अलग अलग जगह एनकाउंटर हुए जिनमें पांच आतंकवादी मारे गए। 3 दहशतगर्द शोपियां के तुलरान गांव में छिपे हुए थे। उन्हें सरेंडर का मौका दिया गया लेकिन जब वो नहीं माने, गोलियां चलाई तो रिटैलिएशन में मारे गए। इसी तरह शोपियां के ही फेरिपोरा इलाके में भी दो आतंकवादियों का सफाया हो गया। तीन आतंकियों की पहचान दानिश हुसैन डार, यावर नायकू और मुख्तार अहमद शाह के तौर पर हुई है। इसी तरह फेरीपोरा में उबेद अहमद डार और खुबैब अहमद नाम के टेररिस्ट्स सिक्योरिटी फोर्स की जवाबी कार्रवाई में मारे गए। पुलिस ने इस बात को कनफर्म किया है कि बांदीपोरा में मोहम्मद शफी लोन की हत्या करनेवाले आतंकी इम्तियाज़ डार और वीरेंद्र पासवान को गोली मारने वाले मुख्तार शाह को खत्म कर दिया गया है।

इंटेलिजेंस सोर्स ने इस बात की पुष्टि की है कि पाकिस्तान की इंटेलिजेंस एजेंसी ISI TRF का इस्तेमाल कर आतंकी हत्याओं को अंजाम दे रही है और ISIS की आड़ में सोशल मीडिया पर इनका प्रचार-प्रसार कर रही है। इस बीच, राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी (NIA) ने सिविलियंस की हत्याओं की जांच शुरू कर दी है। इन टारगेट किलिंग्स में मदद करने वाले ओवरग्राउंड वर्कर्स और सिम्पेथाइजर्स के खिलाफ 10 अक्टूबर को एक आपराधिक मामला दर्ज किया गया है। TRF की मदद करने वाले हर ओवरग्राउंड वर्कर का बैकग्राउंड चेक किया जा रहा है। NIA ने आतंकी सिम्पेथाइजर्स के सोलह ठिकानों पर छापेमारी की है। ये ओवरग्राउंड वर्कर लश्कर, जैश-ए-मोहम्मद, अल बद्र, हिजबुल मुजाहिदीन और अन्य आतंकी संगठनों से जुड़े हुए हैं।

हमारे डिफेंस एडिटर मनीष प्रसाद को दिए एक्सक्लूसिव इंटरव्यू में राष्ट्रीय जांच एजेंसी (NIA) के प्रमुख कुलदीप सिंह ने कहा कि कश्मीर घाटी में आतंकी समूह अब हताश हो चुके हैं और अब वे बौखलाहट में अस्थिरता पैदा करने के लिए अल्पसंख्यकों को निशाना बनाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं, लेकिन वे अपने मंसूबों में कामयाब नहीं होनेवाले हैं।

NIA चीफ ने कहा, “5 अगस्त 2019 को धारा 370 हटने के बाद से जम्मू-कश्मीर में फिर से शांति बहाल हुई और हालात सामान्य हुए लेकिन अब आतंकियों ने भी अलग-अलग तरह की रणनीति बनाई है। इसमें से बहुत सारी चीजों से हम पहले ही निपट चुके हैं, लेकिन पिछले कुछ समय से अल्पसंख्यकों को टारगेट करके टारगेट किलिंग की कवायद शुरू की गई। इनका मकसद लोगों के अंदर डर, दहशत और घाटी में अशांति पैदा करना है, वे इस तरह से घाटी के माहौल को खऱाब करना चाहते हैं ताकि विघटनकारी शक्तियों का प्रादुर्भाव हो। लेकिन अब हालात पूरी तरह बदल चुके है। अब 5 अगस्त 2019 से पहले वाली स्थिति वापस नहीं आ सकती, चाहे वे कुछ भी कर लें। ये उनकी बौखलाहट है। उन्हें कोई और रास्ता नहीं मिल रहा तो निर्दोष लोगों को मार रहे हैं।“

कुलदीप सिंह ने कहा, “अब इसमें कौन सी बहादुरी का काम है, ये तो कायरता है। लड़ना है तो सुरक्षा बलों से लड़ो। ये क्या बात हुई कि कोई गांव या शहर में पैदल जा रहा है, कोई कहीं जा रहा है और आपने उसको पकड़कर मार दिया। ये तो कायरता का काम है। कायरता के कामों को करके वे समाज में एक विघटनकारी परिस्थिति तैयार करना चाहते हैं लेकिन वे इसमें सफल नहीं हुए क्योंकि पब्लिक भी इन चीजों को समझती है।“

NIA डायरेक्टर ने कहा, “माइनॉरिटीज की टारगेट किलिंग तभी हो सकती है जब इनको कोई पनाह दे, कोई ओवरग्राउंड वर्कर हो या फिर कोई इनका सिम्पेथाइजर हो। अब तक जैश-ए-मोहम्मद, लश्कर-ए-तैयबा, हिजबुल मुजाहिदीन, द रेसिस्टेंस फ्रंट, अल बदर जैसे आतंकी समूह से मिलेजुले लोग जब कोई आतंकी गतिविधि करते हैं तो उसपर जम्मू कश्मीर पुलिस तो केस करती ही हैं, और जिसमें ऐसा लगता है कि कोई गैरकानूनी गतिविधि रोकथाम अधिनियम (UAPA) का मामला है तो उसकी जांच के लिए वो भारत सरकार को लिखते हैं और NIA उसकी जांच करती है। लेकिन जो लोग आतंकी संगठन की गतिविधियों में लिप्त रहते हैं, प्लानिंग करते हैं, अबतक उनपर कोई मामला नहीं था। जब सिक्युरिटी फोर्स और इंटेलिजेंस एजेंसी ने सूचना शेयर की तो उसी के आधार पर भारत सरकार ने हमें ऐसे लोगों के खिलाफ मामला दर्ज करने का आदेश दिया। इसी आदेश के तहत हमलोगों ने ऐसे लोगों के खिलाफ 10 अक्टूबर को आपराधिक मामला दर्ज किया है।“

इस्लामिक स्टेट के माध्यम से श्रीनगर में बिहार के स्ट्रीट वेंडर की हत्या का वीडियो पोस्ट करने वाले ISI के निहितार्थों को समझना होगा। पाकिस्तान जम्मू-कश्मीर में सांप्रदायिक तनाव पैदा करना चाहता है। इसकी इंटेलिजेंस एजेंसी आतंकी संगठनों के गिरते मनोबल को बढ़ाने की पूरी कोशिश कर रही है।

अफगानिस्तान में तालिबान का कब्जा होने के बाद कश्मीर में दहशतगर्दी बढ़ेगी इसकी आशंका तो पहले से थी। हमारी सिक्योरिटी फोर्सेज अलर्ट पर थी इसीलिए इस बार आतंकवादियों ने सॉफ्ट टारगेट चुने। दुकान में दवा बेचने वाले, स्कूल में पढ़ाने वाले, सड़क पर पानीपूरी बेचने वाले लोगों को निशाना बनाया। अब जम्मू-कश्मीर पुलिस और फौज ने मिलकर एक बड़ा ऑपरेशन शुरु किया है। इस हमले में शामिल लोगों की पहचान कर ली है। बड़ी संख्या में लोगों को डिटेन किया है लेकिन जब जब सिक्योरिटी फोर्सेज एक्शन लेती हैं तो कुछ लोग ह्यूमन राइट्स का झंडा उठा लेते हैं। महबूबा मुफ्ती ने कहा कि पुलिस एक्शन से कुछ नहीं होगा। आतंकवादियों को मारने और पक़डने से कुछ नहीं होगा। वो तो चाहती है कि हमला करने वालों से, उनके आकाओं से बात करनी चाहिए। मंगलवार को प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने ह्यूमन राइट्स को लेकर इसी तरह की सेलेक्टिव अप्रोच को आड़े हाथों लिया।

Two major developments took place in Kashmir on Tuesday. One, security forces have got evidence of Pakistan focusing on fomenting violence in Jammu and Kashmir after Taliban formed its government in Afghanistan. There is also evidence of Pakistan’s spy agency ISI taking help from terror outfits based in Afghanistan. Terror groups working in the Valley are working under the banner of Islamic State. On Tuesday, Islamic State posted a video on social media claiming responsibility for killing a ‘chaat’ seller Virendra Paswan from Bihar in Srinagar. This killing took place on the day Kashmiri Pandit businessman Makhan Lal Bindroo was shot inside his medicine shop. The video of Islamic State was uploaded on social media by front groups working for Pakistan agency ISI.

The second big news is that our security forces have started taking all-out action against terror groups and their sympathizers. Seven terrorists have been gunned down in the last 30 hours in Kashmir. Out of them, two terrorists were those who had killed innocent civilians.

Security forces have also identified terrorists who were working in a group and had killed businessman Makhan Lal Bindroo, school teacher Deepak Chand and Sikh principal Supinder Kaur. Jammu and Kashmir Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, in my prime time show ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ had promised that those killing minorities will be accounted for, very soon. He seems to have kept his promise. One of them has been gunned down, while the others have been identified and security forces are trying to nab them.

The mastermind behind the killings of minorities seems to be Basit Ahmed Dar of Kulgam, who had been missing from his home since April last year. He joined The Resistance Front (TRF), a front organisation of Lashkar-e-Toiba. Basit Ahmed Dar started his killing spree while taking orders from Abbas Sheikh. After the latter was gunned down by security forces, Bashir Ahmed Dar declared himself the chief of TRF.

Basit, along with Mehran Shallah, Adil and a fourth terrorist, started killing civilians. Two more terrorists, who were part of this group, have been gunned down. This group had carried out target killings of five civilians till now. These include businessman M L Bindroo, ‘chaat’ seller Virendra Paswan, Bandipora taxi stand president Mohammed Shafi Lone, Principal Supinder Kaur and school teacher Deepak Chand.

During the last 30 hours, two terrorists were gunned down in Anantnag and Bandipora, while five others were killed in Shopian in two separate encounters. Three slain terrorists have been identified as Danish Hussain Dar, Yawar Naikoo and Mukhtar Ahmed Shah. They were affiliated to TRF. In Ferrypora, two terrorists Obaid Ahmed Dar and Khubaib Ahmed were gunned down. Kashmir police has confirmed that terrorist Imtiaz Dar, who had killed taxi stand chief Mohd Shafi Lone, and another terrorist Mukhtar Shah who killed the ‘chaat’ seller Virendra Paswan, have been killed.

Intelligence sources have confirmed that Pakistan’s spy agency ISI is carrying out terrorist killings by using TRF, and is propagating them on social media by taking cover of ISIS. Meanwhile, National Investigation Agency (NIA) has already started its investigation into the killings of civilians. A criminal case has been filed on October 10 against overground workers and sympathizers who facilitated these targeted killings. The background of every overground worker helping TRF is being checked. Sixteen locations of terror sympathizers have been raided by NIA. These overground workers are connected with Lashkar, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Al Badr, Hizbul Mujahideen and other terror outfits.

In an exclusive interview to our Defence Correspondent Manish Prasad, NIA director general Kuldiep Singh on Tuesday said, “terror groups in the Valley have now become desperate and are trying to target minorities in order to destabilize the situation, but this is not going to succeed”.

The NIA chief said, “After August 5, 2019, when Article 370 was abrogated, peace and normalcy had returned to the Valley. Terrorist activity against security forces continues, but now they have started targeting minorities recently with an aim to strike fear among people and create disturbance, but the ground situation has completely changed. The situation cannot return to pre-2019 level, howsoever they may try, but it indicates their desperation, and finding no other way, the terrorists are targeting innocents.”

Kuldiep Singh said, “Targeting innocent people is not a matter of bravery, it is outright cowardice. If they are brave, let them target security forces, but to kill people walking in cities or villages is not bravery. By carrying out cowardly acts, these elements are trying to create disturbance, but they will not succeed, because the public at large understands their motives.”

The NIA director general said, “Targeting of minorities happens only when terrorists get shelter from some people, from overground workers or sympathizers. Till now, Jammu and Kashmir police had been filing cases against people working for terror groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hizbul Mujahideen, The Resistance Front, and referring some of the cases to the Centre for booking them under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, and then we (NIA) investigate. Those who were involved in planning terror activity had no cases filed against them. Government of India has directed us to file cases against such people too, and on October 10, we filed a criminal case against such people.”

One should realize the implications of ISI posting video of killing of a vendor from Bihar in Srinagar through the Islamic State. Pakistan wants to create communal strife in Jammu and Kashmir. Its spy agency is desperately trying to boost the sagging morale of terror outfits.

When Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, the writing was clear on the wall. Pakistan has now decided to focus on creating turmoil in the Valley by taking help of jihadi groups from Afghanistan. Since our security forces were on high alert, terrorists took on soft targets like civilians, mostly from minority communities. Security forces have launched all-out operation against terrorists, and a large number of overground workers and sympathizers are being detained.

Groups having soft corners towards terrorists are bound to raise issue of human rights, but it is now known to all that they are being selective. Such groups never raise the cause of Kashmiri Pandits and the killings of civilians. This selective approach by some people was mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself at the NHRC Foundation Day function on Tuesday.

पुंछ जिले की सुरनकोट तहसील के ग्राम चमरेर में छिपे आतंकवादियों के साथ मुठभेड़ में सोमवार को एक जूनियर कमिशन्ड अफसर सहित सेना के 5 जवान शहीद हो गए। पिछले कुछ सालों में ऐसा पहली बार हुआ है जब किसी मुठभेड़ में इतनी बड़ी संख्या में सैनिक शहीद हुए हों। पुंछ-राजौरी बॉर्डर पर स्थित डेरा की गली जंगल में 3 से 4 आतंकियों को पकड़ने के लिए व्यापक तलाशी अभियान जारी है।

यह पता नहीं चल पाया है कि इन आतंकियों ने हाल ही में सीमा पार से घुसपैठ की थी या कुछ वक्त पहले से ही अपने ठिकानों में छिपे हुए थे। सेना को चमरेर गांव में छिपे आतंकियों की मौजूदगी के बारे में गुप्त सूचना मिली थी। जब आतंकियों ने घात लगाकर हमला किया उस समय जवान घेराबंदी और तलाशी अभियान में जुटे हुए थे। शहीद हुए सभी पांचों सैनिक गश्ती दल का नेतृत्व कर रहे थे, तभी आतंकियों ने उन पर गोलियों की बौछार कर दी। आतंकियों को फरार होने से रोकने के लिए सुरक्षाबलों ने पूरे जंगल की घेराबंदी कर दी है, हालांकि उनके पीर पंजाल रेंज से होते हुए शोपियां निकल जाने की आशंका जताई जा रही है।

मुठभेड़ में पंजाब के कपूरथला जिले के नायब सूबेदार (JCO) जसविंदर सिंह, गुरदासपुर जिले के नायक मनदीप सिंह, रोपड़ जिले के सिपाही गज्जन सिंह, उत्तर प्रदेश के शाहजहांपुर जिले के सिपाही सराज सिंह और केरल के कोल्लम जिले के सिपाही वैशाख एच. शहीद हो गए। शहीदों का पूरे सैनिक सम्मान के साथ अंतिम संस्कार किया जाएगा।

जम्मू डिविजन में इस साल जनवरी से अब तक आतंकियों के साथ मुठभेड़ में सेना के 8 जवान शहीद हो चुके हैं। इस दौरान नियंत्रण रेखा के पास पाकिस्तानी सेना द्वारा किए गए सीजफायर उल्लंघन में 3 अन्य सैनिक शहीद हुए हैं। घाटी में आतंकवादियों द्वारा हिंदू और सिख नागरिकों की हत्या के मद्देनजर सोमवार का सैन्य अभियान सुरक्षाबलों के ‘ऑपरेशन ऑल आउट’ कार्रवाई का हिस्सा था। पिछले साल 3 मई को हंदवाड़ा में आतंकियों को उनके ठिकाने से खदेड़ने के दौरान कर्नल और मेजर रैंक के सेना के 2 अफसर, एक पुलिस सब-इंस्पेक्टर और 2 अन्य जवान शहीद हो गए थे।

पिछले 9 महीनों के दौरान पुंछ और राजौरी जिलों में आतंकियों के साथ मुठभेड़ों की संख्या में वृद्धि हुई है। 6 अगस्त को राजौरी जिले में लश्कर-ए-तैयबा के 2 आतंकी मारे गए थे, जबकि 8 जुलाई को राजौरी के सुंदरबनी सेक्टर में घुसपैठ की कोशिश के दौरान कई हथियारों से लैस 2 पाकिस्तानी आतंकियों को मार गिराया गया था। इस साल अगस्त में राजौरी जिले में मुठभेड़ के दौरान सेना के एक जेसीओ शहीद हो गए थे और एक आतंकवादी मारा गया था।

एक ओर जहां कांग्रेस और अन्य विपक्षी नेता केंद्र की कश्मीर नीति को लेकर सवाल उठा रहे हैं, वहीं पंजाब के पूर्व मुख्यमंत्री कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह ने, जो कि खुद साठ के दशक में सेना में रह चुके हैं, ट्वीट करते हुए एक बड़ी बात कही: ‘हमारी सबसे गम्भीर आशंका सच साबित हो रही है। पाकिस्तान समर्थित तालिबान के अफगानिस्तान पर कब्जा करने के बाद, कश्मीर में आतंकवाद बढ़ रहा है। अल्पसंख्यकों को चुन-चुन कर निशाना बनाया जा रहा है और अब सुरनकोट सेक्टर के एनकाउंटर में 5 जवान शहीद हो गए हैं। हमें इससे निर्णायक तौर पर और सख्ती से निपटने की जरूरत है।’

इसमें कोई शक नहीं कि हमारी सेना इन हत्यारों को खोजने और उनका सफाया करने में पूरी तरह सक्षम है। अनंतनाग और बांदीपोरा में सोमवार को 2 आतंकियों को ढेर कर दिया गया। भारतीय जनता पार्टी की जम्मू-कश्मीर इकाई के प्रमुख रविंदर रैना ने कहा, सशस्त्र बलों ने घाटी में आतंकी संगठनों की कमर तोड़कर रख दी है और यही वजह है कि आतंकवादी अब चुन-चुन कर आम नागरिकों को निशाना बना रहे हैं और सेना के जवानों पर घात लगाकर हमला कर रहे हैं। सिर्फ इसी साल हमारे सशस्त्र बलों ने अब तक 119 आतंकवादियों को मार गिराया है। इनमें से सबसे ज्यादा 30 आतंकी इस साल मई के महीने में ढेर किए गए, जबकि जुलाई में 20 आतंकी मारे गए।

घाटी में कुछ ऐसे नेता भी हैं जो आतंकी हमलों में आई तेजी को राजनीतिक रंग देने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। पीडीपी अध्यक्ष महबूबा मुफ्ती ने ट्वीट किया है, ‘कश्मीर में बिगड़ते हालात को देखकर परेशान हूं, जहां एक छोटा अल्पसंख्यक समुदाय नया निशाना बन गया है। नया कश्मीर बनाने के भारत सरकार के दावों ने हकीकत में इसे जहन्नुम में तब्दील कर दिया है। इसकी एकमात्र दिलचस्पी कश्मीर को अपने चुनावी हितों के लिए दुधारू गाय के रूप में इस्तेमाल करने में है।’ महबूबा एक बार फिर कश्मीर मुद्दे को सुलझाने के लिए पाकिस्तान और अलगाववादियों से बातचीत शुरू करने के अपने पुराने राग को अलाप रही हैं।

यह कोई नई बात नहीं है। जब-जब कश्मीर में आतंकी गतिविधियों में तेजी आएगी, महबूबा मुफ्ती को यह कहने का मौका मिलेगा कि उन्होंने तो अनुच्छेद 370 को निरस्त करने को लेकर आगाह किया था। महबूबा ने तो 2 साल पहले यह भी कहा था कि यदि अनुच्छेद 370 को हटा दिया गया तो कश्मीर में तिरंगा थामने के लिए एक भी भारतीय नहीं होगा। पिछले 2 सालों में कश्मीर में तिरंगा थामने वाले भारतीय हाथ भी बढ़े और तिरंगे के लिए अपनी कुर्बानी देने को तैयार लोगों की तादाद भी बढ़ी है। महबूबा की अपनी सियासी मजबूरियां हो सकती हैं, लेकिन देर-सबेर उनकी बात गलत साबित होगी। घाटी में आग लगाने के अपने मकसद में पाकिस्तान जरूर नाकाम होगा।

Five army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer, were martyred on Monday during a gunfight with terrorists hiding in village Chamrer under Surankote tehsil of Poonch district. This was the first time in last several years when army has suffered highest number of casualties during a single encounter. A massive search operation is on to nab the three to four terrorists in the Dera Ki Gali forest on Poonch-Rajouri border.

It was not clear whether this terrorist group had infiltrated across the border recently or was already holed up inside its hideout for some time. Army had specific inputs about terrorists hiding in Chamrer village and was carrying out a cordon and search operation, when the terrorists ambushed the jawans. All the five army personnel killed were leading the patrol and had to face the barrage of bullets from terrorists. Security forces have thrown a cordon around the entire forest to prevent the terrorists from escaping, though there is a possibility of them moving to Shopian through the Pir Panjal range.

JCO Naib Subedar Jaswinder Singh of Punjab’s Kapurthala district, Naik Mandeep Singh of Gurdaspur district, Sepoy Gajjan Singh of Ropar district, Sepoy Saraj Singh of Shahjahanpur district, UP, and Sepoy Vaisakh H. of Kollam district, Kerala were martyred in the encounter. They will be cremated with full military honours.

Since January this year, eight army personnel have been martyred so far while fighting terrorists in Jammu division. Three others were killed during ceasefire violations by Pakistan army near Line of Control. Monday’s army operation was part of Operation All Out crackdown by security forces in the wake of killing of Hindu and Sikh civilians in the Valley by terrorists. Last year, on May 3 in Handwara, two army officers of the rank of Colonel and Major, along with a police sub-inspector and two other jawans were martyred while flushing out terrorists from their hideout.

Poonch and Rajouri districts have been witnessing rise in number of encounters with terrorists during the last nine months. On August 6, two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists were killed in Rajouri district, while on July 8, two heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists were gunned down while trying to infiltrate in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri. In August this year, an army JCO and a terrorist were killed during an encounter in Rajouri district.

While Congress and other opposition leaders questioned the Centre about its Kashmir policy, former Punjab chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, an ex-army man, hit the nail on the head when he tweeted: “Our worst fears are coming true. With Pakistan backed Taliban taking over Afghanistan, terrorism is increasing in Kashmir. Minorities are being selectively targeted and now five soldiers have been killed in action in Surankote sector. We need to deal with it decisively and firmly.”

There is no doubt that our armed forces are capable of hunting and eliminating these killers. On Monday, two terrorists were gunned down in Anantnag and Bandipora. Jammu and Kashmir BJP unit chief Ravinder Raina said, armed forces have broken the back of terrorist groups in the Valley, and this was the reason why terrorists are now selectively targeting civilians and ambushing army jawans. Our armed forces have gunned down 119 terrorists in this year alone, till now. Out of them, the largest number of 30 terrorists were killed during May this year, while in July, 20 terrorists were gunned down.

There are politicians in the Valley who are trying to give a political angle to the spurt in terror attacks. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has tweeted, “Disturbing to see the deteriorating situation in Kashmir where a minuscule minority is the latest target. GOI’s claims of building a Naya Kashmir has actually turned it into a hellhole. Its sole interest is to use Kashmir as a milch cow for its electoral interests.” Mehbooba is harping on her old tune for starting negotiations with Pakistan and separatists on resolving Kashmir issue.

This is nothing new. Whenever there will be a spurt in terror activity, Mehbooba Mufti will say that she had forewarned about abrogation of Article 370. To put it on record, Mehbooba had said two years ago that if Article 370 was removed, there will not be a single Indian to raise the tricolour in the Valley. In the last two years, the number of Indians hoisting the tricolour in the valley has increased, and the number of Indians offering to sacrifice their lives for sake of tricolour has also increased. Mehbooba may be having her own political compulsions, but her premonitions are bound to be proved wrong in the long run. Pakistan’s desperate gambit in trying to stoke fire in the Valley will fail.

आखिरकार 68 साल के बाद एयर इंडिया की घर वापसी हो गई है। 18 हजार करोड़ की बोली लगाकर टाट संस ने एयर इंडिया को खरीद लिया और इस तरह एक बार फिर इस पर टाटा की मुहर लग गई। सरकार ने एयर इंडिया की बिडिंग में 12 हज़ार 906 करोड़ रूपए का आरक्षित मूल्य रखा था लेकिन इससे करीब 5 हजार करोड़ रुपये से ज्यादा की बोली लगाकर इसे 18 हजार करोड़ में अपने नाम कर लिया। टाटा की यह बोली स्पाइस जेट की तुलना में 19 प्रतिशत ज्यादा थी।

इस डील की घोषणा के बाद, टाटा संस के मानद चेयरमैन रतन टाटा ने एक भावुक करनेवाला ट्वीट किया। इस ट्वीट में उन्होंने एयर इंडिया के केबिन क्रू के साथ जेआरडी टाटा की 1971 की तस्वीर पोस्ट की और लिखा, ‘एयर इंडिया के लिए यह बोली जीतना टाटा ग्रुप के लिए अच्छी खबर है। हालांकि मैं मानता हूं कि कर्ज में डूबी एयर इंडिया को पटरी पर लाने के लिए काफी प्रयास की जरूरत होगी। उम्मीद है कि यह एविएशन इंडस्ट्री में टाटा समूह को मजबूत बाजार का अवसर उपलब्ध कराएगी। एक समय जेआरडी टाटा के नेतृत्व में एयर इंडिया ने दुनिया की सबसे प्रतिष्ठित एयरलाइंस में से एक होने का गौरव प्राप्त किया था। टाटा को अपनी पुरानी छवि और गौरव को फिर से हासिल करने का अवसर मिलेगा जो उसने पहले हासिल की थी। जेआरडी टाटा अगर आज हमारे बीच होते तो वे बहुत खुश होते। चुनिंदा उद्योगों को निजी क्षेत्र के लिए खोलने की हाल की नीति के लिए हमें सरकार को धन्यवाद देने की जरूरत है। वेलकम बैक, एयर इंडिया!’

टाटा संस की सहायक कंपनी टैलेस प्राइवेट लिमिटेड एयर इंडिया और एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस में 100 फीसदी हिस्सेदारी और ग्राउंड हैंडलिंग ज्वाइंट वेंचर एयर इंडिया SATS में 50 फीसदी हिस्सेदारी का अधिग्रहण करेगी। यह याद रखना चाहिए कि टाटा के स्वामित्व वाली एयर इंडिया का 1953 में जवाहरलाल नेहरू के शासन के दौरान राष्ट्रीयकरण किया गया था। इसके बाद से जेआरडी टाटा एयर इंडिया के अध्यक्ष के बने रहे, लेकिन 1978 में उन्हें मोरारजी देसाई सरकार द्वारा पद से हटा दिया गया था। वर्ष 2001 में अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी सरकार ने घाटे में चल रही एयर इंडिया को बेचने की योजना बनाई, जो अब 20 साल के अंतराल के बाद अमल में आई है।

एयर इंडिया का अधिग्रहण करने के साथ ही टाटा को 141 विमान मिलेंगे। इन विमानों के परिचालन के साथ ही 55 अंतरराष्ट्रीय रूट 173 शहरों के नेटवर्क तक टाटा की पहुंच होगी। टाटा समूह के पास एयर इंडिया, इंडियन एयरलाइंस और महाराजा के प्रतिष्ठित ब्रांड नेम भी होंगे। बिक्री की शर्तों की बात करें तो केंद्र सरकार को टाटा ग्रुप से 2,700 करोड़ रुपये नकद मिलेंगे जबकि शेष 15,300 करोड़ रुपये से सरकार अपने कर्ज की भरपाई की कोशिश करेगी। एयर इंडिया पर कुल कर्ज करीब 61,562 करोड़ रुपए है। मौजूदा समय में एयर इंडिया को रोजना 20 करोड़ का नुकसान हो रहा है। कुल संचित घाटा लगभग 84,000 करोड़ रुपये है।

सरकार ने साफ किया कि इस सौदे में 14,718 करोड़ रुपये मूल्य की नॉन-कोर एसेट( संपत्ति) जैसे जमीन, बिल्डिंग आदि शामिल नहीं हैं। समझौते की शर्तों में साफ तौर पर यह कहा गया है कि अधिग्रहण के पहले वर्ष के दौरान एयर इंडिया के कर्मचारियों की कोई छंटनी नहीं होगी, लेकिन दूसरे साल से एयर इंडिया और एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस के 13,500 कर्मचारियों में से 8,000 को वीआरएस की पेशकश की जा सकती है। इस सौदे में यह साफ है कि टाटा 5 साल के बाद 49 फीसदी हिस्सेदारी बेच सकता है और एयर इंडिया ब्रांड का नाम केवल भारतीय कंपनी को ही ट्रांसफर किया जा सकता है।

एयर इंडिया और एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस की अंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजार में हिस्सेदारी 18.3 प्रतिशत है। इसका अधिग्रहण करके टाटा समूह अब एविएशन क्षेत्र में भारत का सबसे बड़ा अंतरराष्ट्रीय खिलाड़ी बन जाएगा जबकि डोमेस्टिक एविएशन में इसका नंबर दूसरा होगा। टाटा ग्रुप के बड़े अधिकारी पहले से ही वर्तमान प्रबंधन के पुनर्गठन, पुरानी पीढ़ी के विमानों को नवीनीकृत करने, वेंडर्स के साथ ऊंची कीमतों वाले अनुबंधों पर दोबारा बातचीत करने और भारी कर्ज को रिफाइनेंस करने की योजना पर काम कर रहे हैं। एयर इंडिया के आईटी और डिजिटल ऑपरेशन को टाटा की प्रमुख सॉफ्टवेयर कंपनी TCS द्वारा अधिग्रहित किया जाएगा। इससे कार्यक्षमता में सुधार होगा और ऑपरेशन के साथ-साथ मेंटेनेंस की लागत कम होगी। TCS पहले ही भारत को छोड़तर कई अन्य देशों की नेशनल एयरलाइंस के आईटी सिस्टम्स और ऐप्लिकेशंस का काम देखती है।

भारत में नागरिक उड्डयन के इतिहास पर एक सरसरी नजर डाल लेते हैं। जेआरडी टाटा जब 15 साल के थे तब उन्होंने पहली बार फ्रांस में एक प्लेन में सफर किया। इसके बाद उन्होंने पायलट बनने और एविएशन सेक्टर में ही करियर बनाने का फैसला किया। जेआरडी टाटा ने प्लेन उड़ाना सीखा और 1929 में 24 साल की उम्र में उन्हें भारत का पहला पायलट लाइसेंस मिला। उन्होंने 1932 में टाटा एयरलाइंस की स्थापना की। 15 अक्टूबर 1932 को ‘टाटा एविएशन सर्विसेज’ की पहली कमर्शियल फ्लाइट ने कराची से बंबई के बीच उड़ान भरी, और उस फ्लाइट के पायलट खुद जेआरडी टाटा थे।

बाद में इसका नाम टाटा एयरलाइंस हो गया और 1938 में इसके मस्कॉट महाराजा को डिजाइन किया गया, जो कि आज तक बना हुआ है। 1946 में टाटा एयरलाइंस प्राइवेट से पब्लिक लिमिटेड कंपनी बनी और इसका नाम एयर इंडिया कर दिया गया। 1953 में एयर इंडिया का राष्ट्रीयकरण कर दिया गया, लेकिन जेआरडी टाटा इसके चेयरमैन बने रहे। उस समय जेआरडी टाटा इसके खिलाफ थे और उनका मानना था कि सरकार एयरलाइंस नहीं चला पाएगी। सरकार ने उनकी नहीं सुनी और इसके बाद वही हुआ जिसका डर जेआरडी टाटा को था। एयर इंडिया भयंकर घाटे में चली गई।

1995 में जब निजी एयरलाइंस ने भारतीय एविएशन में कदम रखा, टाटा ने एक जॉइंट वेंचर शुरू करने के लिए सिंगापुर एयरलाइंस के साथ समझौता किया, लेकिन तत्कालीन सरकार ने विदेशी कंपनियों को भारतीय एयर कैरियर में हिस्सेदारी की इजाजत नहीं दी थी। 2001 में, टाटा ने सिंगापुर एयरलाइंस के साथ एयर इंडिया के अधिग्रहण के लिए बोली लगाई, लेकिन योजना को ठंडे बस्ते में डाल दिया गया। 2003 में टाटा ने मलेशिया की AirAsia के साथ गठबंधन किया और एक बजट एयरलाइन, एयरएशिया इंडिया शुरू की। 2013 में, टाटा ने SIA के सहयोग से एक फुल सर्विस एयरलाइन Vistara लॉन्च की। 2019 में, केंद्र ने एयर इंडिया की 100 फीसदी हिस्सेदारी बेचने का फैसला किया और बोली लगाने का आह्वान किया। शुक्रवार, 8 अक्टूबर को केंद्र ने टाटा की अमानत उसको वापस करने का फैसला किया।

नागरिक उड्डयन मंत्री ज्योतिरादित्य सिंधिया ने एयर इंडिया को टाटा संस को बेचने के फैसले का स्वागत किया। सिंधिया ने कहा, ‘यह भारत के 130 करोड़ लोगों के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण दिन है। यह एयरलाइन पिछले कुछ सालों से रोजाना 20 करोड़ और और सालाना 7,500 करोड़ रुपये का घाटा उठा रही थी। यह विनिवेश प्रक्रिया अत्यंत गहन, अत्यंत कठोर रही है और इसके परिणामस्वरूप प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी, वित्त मंत्री निर्मला सीतारमण, DIPAM और नागरिक उड्डयन मंत्रालय के नेतृत्व में एक ऐतिहासिक परिणाम प्राप्त हुआ है।’

सरकार पिछले दो दशकों से एयर इंडिया को बेचने की कोशिश कर रही थी लेकिन घाटा इतना ज्यादा था कि कोई उसे खरीदने को तैयार नहीं था। यह सरकार के लिए सफेद हाथी बन गया था। एयर इंडिया को रोजाना 20 करोड़ रुपये का जो घाटा हो रहा था, उसकी भरपाई हमारी आपकी जेब से हो रही थी।

2009 से अब तक केंद्र सरकार एयर इंडिया को 1,11,000 करोड़ रुपये की मदद दे चुकी है। इसमें से 54,000 करोड़ रुपये सरकार की ओर से कैश में दिए गए, फिर भी एयर इंडिया की वित्तीय स्थिति में सुधार नहीं हुआ। 31 अगस्त तक एयर इंडिया का कुल घाटा 62,000 करोड़ रुपये था, और इस समय इसकी नेट वर्थ -33,000 करोड़ रुपये है।

इसीलिए सरकार जल्दी से जल्दी महाराज की विदाई चाहती थी। टाटा का इसके साथ एक भावनात्मक रिश्ता है, इसलिए उसने एयर इंडिया को खरीदने का फैसला किया। मुझे लगता है कि अब एक बार फिर एयर इंडिया का पुराना वैभव लौटेगा।

In a historic acquisition, the Tata group, after a gap of 68 years, was set to regain control of India’s national carrier Air India, after its bid of Rs 18,000 crore was accepted by the Centre. This was nearly Rs 5,000 crore more than the reserve price of Rs 12,906 crore set by the government. The bid was 19 per cent more than the next rival bidder SpiceJet.

After the deal was announced, Tata Sons chairman emeritus Ratan Tata in an emotional tweet, posted a 1971 photograph of JRD Tata posing with Air India cabin crew and wrote: “The Tata group winning the bid for Air India is great news! While admittedly it will take considerable effort to rebuild Air India, it will hopefully provide a very strong market opportunity to the Tata group’s presence in the aviation industry. On an emotional note, Air India under the leadership of JRD Tata had, at one time, gained the reputation of being one of the most prestigious airlines in the world. Tatas will have the opportunity of regaining the image and reputation it enjoyed in earlier years. JRD Tata would have been overjoyed if he was in our midst today. We also need to recognize and thank the government for its recent policy of opening select industries to the private sector. Welcome back, Air India!”.

Tata Sons subsidiary Talace Pvt Ltd will acquire 100 per cent stake in Air India and Air India Express, and 50 per cent stake in ground handling joint venture Air India SATS.

It may be recalled that Tata-owned Air India was nationalized by the government during Jawaharlal Nehru’s regime in 1953. The pioneer of Indian aviation, J R D Tata continued to stay as chairman of Air India, but in 1978 he was removed from the post by Morarji Desai government. In 2001, Atal Bihari Vajpayee government mooted a plan to sell the loss-making Air India, which has now materialized after a gap of 20 years.

By taking over Air India, Tatas will acquire 141 aircraft and will have access to a network of 173 cities, including 55 international destinations. Tata group will also own the iconic brand names of Air India, Indian Airlines and Maharajah. According to the terms of sale, the Centre will get Rs 2,700 crore in cash from Tata group, while the balance Rs 15,300 crore will go towards taking over nearly 25 per cent of the government’s total Air India debt of Rs 61,562 crore. Air India is presently incurring a daily loss of Rs 20 crore. The total accumulated loss is nearly Rs 84,000 crore.

The government made it clear that the deal does not include non-core assets like land, buildings, etc. valued at Rs 14,718 crore. The terms of agreement clearly state that there shall be no retrenchment of Air India staff during the first year of takeover, but from second year onwards, 8,000 out of 13,500-odd AI and AI Express staff can be offered VRS. The deal clearly stipulates that Tatas can sell 49 per cent stake after the first year, and they can transfer the brand only after five years. The brand name Air India can only be transferred to an Indian company.

By acquiring Air India and AI Express, which have an international market share of 18.3 per cent presently, the Tata group will now become the largest international player from India, and the second largest in domestic aviation. Already, top honchos of Tata group are working on plans to restructure the present management, refurbish older generation aircraft, renegotiate high-cost contracts with vendors and refinance the mountain of debt. Air India’s IT and digital operations will be taken over by TCS, Tata’s flagship software company. This will improve efficiency and reduce operational and maintenance costs. TCS already runs IT systems and applications of many national carriers of other countries, except India.

A brief look at the history of Indian civil aviation. JRD Tata, its pioneer, learnt flying at the age of 15. He got India’s first pilot licence at the age of 24 in 1929. JRD flew Tata Aviation Services’ first airmail flight in 1932 from Karachi to Mumbai. Later it became Tata Airlines and in 1938, the Maharajah mascot was designed, which continues till this day. In 1946, it was rechristened as Air India. In 1953, the government nationalized Air India, but JRD Tata continued to remain as chairman. At that time, JRD Tata strongly protested saying that an airline run by government would one day become unviable. His warning was prophetic and Air India, over the years under government control, continued to bleed.

In 1995, when private airlines took to Indian skies, Tata tied up with Singapore Airlines to launch a joint venture, but the then regime forbade foreign companies from holding stake in Indian air carriers. In 2001, Tata along with Singapore Airlines bid for acquiring Air India, but the plan was shelved. In 2003, Tata formed alliance with Malaysia’s AirAsia and started a budget airline, AirAsia India. In 2013, Tatas launched a full service airline Vistara in collaboration with SIA. In 2019, Centre decided to sell 100 per cent stake in Air India and called for bids. On Friday, October 8, the Centre decided to hand over the family silver back to Tatas.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia welcomed the decision to sell Air India to Tata Sons. “It’s a momentous day for India’s 130 crore people. An airline that has been bleeding Rs 20 crore a day and Rs 7,500 crore a year over the last few years. This disinvestment process has been extremely thorough, extremely rigorous and has resulted in a landmark outcome under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, DIPAM and the Ministry of Civil Aviation”, Scindia said.

The government had been trying to sell Air India for the last two decades but no buyers came forward because of mounting losses. It had become a white elephant for the government. The daily Rs 20 crore loss that was being incurred by Air India, was being paid for, from our pockets.

From 2009 till now, the Centre has given Rs 1,11,000 crore assistance to Air India. Out of this, Rs 54,000 crore has been given in cash by the government and yet, the financial condition of Air India did not improve. Till August 31, Air India’s accumulated loss stood at Rs 62,000 crore, and, at this moment, the net worth of the airline is minus Rs 33,000 crore.

The government was in a hurry to bid goodbye to the Maharajah. Tatas have an emotional attachment to the Maharajah and they, therefore, decided to buy back the airline. I have a gut feeling that Air India will soon regain its lost glory.
