Insensitive Hathras Police: cremation at night

My heart fills with sorrow, anger and pain over what Hathras police did on Tuesday night to brazenly cover up its lies in the dead of night. Sorrow, because a 19-year-old girl who was tortured and gang-raped by four people died; pain, on watching the tears of the girl’s parents; and anger, over how Hathras police set fire to basic human values of dignity when it hurriedly cremated the body in the absence of family members.

At 2.40 am on Tuesday night in the poor Dalit family’s village, the police not only cremated the gang-rape victim’s body in a hurry, but also made a bonfire of all civil laws, all sense of human dignity and the majesty of the police uniform. All this was done through brazen assertion of the clout of its uniform, before a crowd of villagers silently watching the funeral pyre.

Till the last moment, the Dalit parents and the victim’s brother pleaded before police officers to allow the cremation to be done early at dawn, according to Hindu rites, so that relatives could come and have a last look at the girl, but the police officders did not budge. They were clearly in a hurry to cremate, so that the lies that they had dished out over the last two weeks could be covered up, for ever.

In the presence of District Magistrate and Superintendent of police, hundreds of policemen assembled at the cremation ground and put the victim’s body on the funeral pyre. A handful of villagers who insisted on seeing the girl’s face, were threatened by policemen with dialogues like ‘zyada boley toh tapka doonga’( will shoot you if you speak much). This threat was recorded on camera.

My simple question to the administration: what was the girl’s crime because of which the DM ordered that the body be cremated in the dead of night? Was she an orphan? Was she a destitute? Even the last rites of dreaded terrorists are conducted with dignity, their family members are called to have a last look, but in Hathras, police did not give even the minimal amount of respect to the victim and her family members. They did not show mercy towards the victim’s parents and brother. The girl’s father was kicked by a policeman, and her brother was beaten up by another inside his house. Reason: they were insisting that the body be cremated at dawn.

The police officers forcibly took away the victim’s body from her house to the cremation ground and later claimed that the cremation was done “with the consent of family members”. Nothing could be more shameful than this white lie.

In my prime time show ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ on Wednesday night, I showed how the girl’s parents pleaded before police officers, and what the officers replied to family members. No more evidence is required to prove that the local administration’s attitude was abrasive and arrogant. I showed how the girl’s father was begging before the DM to allow his family to have a last look at the girl, and the DM replied that he would allow them but the cremation must be done immediately. How can a senior official be so cruel and brazen, telling the victim’s father ‘not to fall in the trap of villagers’?

At a time when the entire nation stands in sympathy with the victim’s family, the local administration which is supposed to provide help and succour to the victim’s family was behaving in a heartless manner. I would not describe it as ‘final rites’, because in Hindu religious tradition, a body is not cremated after sunset. There was nobody from the family to weep near the funeral pyre when it was lit. Only scores of policemen were standing near the pyre, with full barricading in place, and the victim’s body turned into ashes in the fearful and still silence of the night.

India TV reporter Anand Pandey managed to reach the girl’s home on Tuesday night even before the police put barricades around the village to stop the media from sneaking in. In my show, I showed how the girl’s mother along with other women stood in front of the police ambulance to stop the body from being taken directly to the cremation ground. The women were demanding that the body be first taken to the girl’s home. But policemen were adamant. Women police constables were called in and they were asked to remove the women who were squatting on the ground in front of the ambulance. The menfolk were chased away by policemen with lathis.

Senior police officials, wearing helmets, reached the spot. At first, they insisted that the cremation would be done immediately, but the womenfolk said the body should at least be taken to the girl’s home for a last look. After much persistence, the ambulance was taken to the girl’s home but a fresh problem arose. The villagers had brought ice slabs to prevent the body from decomposing, and the girl’s parents insisted that the body be kept in home at least till dawn. Police then took a tough line and the ambulance was taken straight to the cremation ground. Another problem arose over how to cremate the body in the absence of family members. The girl’s uncle and her grandfather were forcibly brought to the cremation ground in a police jeep.

Police officers tried to persuade family members to come to the cremation ground, but they insisted that the cremation must be carried out at dawn. Heated exchanges took place between the police and family members, one policeman kicked the girl’s father, and another policeman started beating her brother.

In my show, I showed how policemen were trying to drag family members into police jeeps, but the girl’s family resisted. Finally, with the family barricading itself inside the house, police carried out the final rites of the gang-rape victim at the cremation ground. The family members were in such a state of fear that they did not dare to venture outside their house throughout the night. This was how a gang-rape victim was cremated in the dead of night. Such an act is unprecedented and unheard of, at least in recent times.

The Hathras DM’s claim that the cremation was done after obtaining consent of the victim’s family is a plain lie. The girl’s mother and brother told India TV on camera that they were being forced to go to the cremation ground, but they resisted and staying inside their home. The girl’s mother said that the family members were beaten up by police

The only reason behind a hurried cremation was that the local administration wanted the matter to fizzle out at the earliest. Police officers feared that if the cremation took place in the morning in the presence of media, the matter would go out of hand. The local administration wanted to cover up all the lies that were being dished out by police since the gang-rape incident. The police was clearly unwilling to face intense media scrutiny. But they evidently forgot that TV news channel staff do not sleep at night and they recorded all the drama that took place inside the girl’s house.

My view is that the matter would not have gone out of hand, had the police spoken the truth from the beginning. The police was dishing out lies one after another and was trying to obfuscate matters. If the police had acted fairly in the beginning, the girl’s life could have been saved.

The first lie that police made was that it was sexual harassment and not a gang-rape. The second lie that police made was that only one accused was involved. The third lie was: there were no spinal injuries. The fourth lie was: the rapists did not cut off her tongue. The fifth lie was: the victim was undergoing proper treatment. The final lie made by police on Wednesday was: the cremation was done with the consent of the family.

How can the family of a gang-rape victim, in the face of so many lies, trust the local police to provide justice, and ensure that the rapists-cum-murderers are hanged? UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has realized that the opposition parties may try to take undue advantage because all the four accused belonged to Rajput community and the victim was a Dalit girl. The lies that were dished out by local administration and police will ultimately hurt Yogi.

Yogi Adityanath spoke to the girl’s father on phone, promised to give Rs 25 lakhs as assistance, a house and a government job for his son. This is not adequate. The rapists-cum-murderers must be hanged at the earliest, and Yogi must ensure that the prosecution be launched without any delay. He must ensure that the police prepares its case diligently and top lawyers are hired to fight the prosecution’s case in court. He must also ensure that the verdict must come from the fast track court within a definite time frame.

उत्तर प्रदेश के हाथरस में 19 साल की एक दलित युवती के साथ गैंगरेप और क्रूरता की घटना से पूरे देश में गुस्सा है। युवती ने 2 हफ्ते तक मौत से लड़ते हुए मंगलवार को दिल्ली के सफदरजंग अस्पताल में दम तोड़ दिया। देश की एक बेटी की जान चली गई, वह हैवानियत की शिकार हुई, उसकी हड्डियां तोड़ दी गईं, उसकी जीभ काटने की कोशिश हुई, वह मौत से जूझती रही, लेकिन मंगलवार को वह ज़िन्दगी की जंग हार गई। इस बेटी के साथ जो कुछ हुआ, वह दिल दहला देने वाला है, सुन कर रूह कांप उठती है, रौंगटे खड़े हो जाते हैं। इसके बाद पुलिस, प्रशासन का जो रवैया था, डाक्टरों की जो लापरवाही थी, वह किसी अपराध से कम नहीं है।

मंगलवार की रात को मैने ‘आज की बात’ में हाथरस की इस बेटी का बयान सुनाया, उसकी मां ने जो कहा, उसे दिखाया, पुलिस कैसे इन लोगों के बयानों से बाल की खाल निकाल रही है, ये भी बताया। मैंने दिखाया कैसे पूरे मामले पर पुलिस लीपापोती करने की कोशिश कर रही है, और सबसे दुख की बात, एक बेटी की मौत पर कैसे सियासत हो रही है।

घटना 14 सितम्बर की है। हाथरस जिले के चांदपा इलाके के एक गांव में यह युवती अपनी मां के साथ खेत में घास काटने गई थी। उसी समय चार युवक इस युवती को घसीट कर बाजरे के खेत में ले गए, जहां उसके साथ न सिर्फ सामूहिक दुष्कर्म किया, बल्कि पीट-पीट कर उसकी हड्डियां तोड़ दीं और उसकी जीभ काटने की कोशिश की। बेटी की चीख सुन कर उसकी मां वहां पहुंची। तब तक बलात्कारी वहां से भाग चुके थे। मां ने अपनी साड़ी से बेटी के नग्न शरीर को ढका। पुलिस घटनास्थल पर नहीं गई। मां-बेटे घायल युवती को लेकर थाने गए। वहीं पुलिस ने युवती को फौरन अस्पताल भेजने की बजाय युवती के परिजनों से घटना के बारे में विस्तार से पूछने लगे। क्या हुआ, कैसे हुआ, कौन-कौन थे, क्या सबूत हैं, खेत में क्या करने गए थे, आदि, आदि। पुलिस को बिलकुल रहम नहीं आया। तब इस दलित परिवार ने अपनी बेटी को स्वास्थ्य केन्द्र ले जाने का प्रबंध किया, जहां से उसे तुरंत अलीगढ़ मेडिकल कालेज रेफर कर दिया गया। तब तक काफी देर हो चुकी थी, युवती की हालत बिगड़ चुकी थी, उसे सोमवार को दिल्ली के सफदरजंग अस्पताल लाया गया, जहां एक दिन बाद उसकी मौत हो गई। इस पूरे प्रकरण के दौरान, स्थानीय पुलिस का जो व्यवहार रहा उसके बारे में यह कहा जा सकता है कि वह बेहद शर्मनाक और संवेदनहीन था।

मंगलवार की रात सफदरजंग अस्पताल में उस वक्त खूब ड्रामा हुआ, जब यूपी पुलिस ने परिवार वालों के विरोध के बावजूद शव को बाहर निकाल लिया। पुलिस ने माता-पिता और परिवार वालों की गैर-मौजूदगी में बूल गढ़ी गांव के पास बुधवार सुबह करीब ढाई बजे युवती का अंतिम संस्कार कर दिया। अंतिम संस्कार देखने के लिए पुलिस 30-40 ग्रामीणों को ही अपने साथ लेकर आई थी। परिवार के सदस्यों को न तो दिल्ली में और न ही गांव में युवती के शव को आखिरी बार देखने का अवसर दिया गया।

मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ ने बुधवार को कहा कि राज्य के गृह सचिव की अध्यक्षता में तीन सदस्यीय एसआईटी पूरे मामले की जांच करेगी और सात दिनों के भीतर अपनी रिपोर्ट सौंपेगी। योगी ने कहा, ‘प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने रेप के आरोपियों के खिलाफ ‘सख्त कार्रवाई’ करने की बात कही है। उन्होंने कहा कि इस मामले की सुनवाई जल्दी ही फास्ट ट्रैक कोर्ट में होगी।’

शुरुआत में स्थानीय पुलिस ने केवल एक युवक के खिलाफ एफआईआर दर्ज की थी लेकिन काफी विरोध के बाद पुलिस को तीन अन्य आरोपियों के नाम जोड़ने पड़े। युवती ने घटना के एक सप्ताह बाद अपने बयान में सभी चार आरोपियों के नाम का खुलासा किया। जीभ में गंभीर घाव के कारण वह शुरू में बोल नहीं पा रही थी।

इस वारदात के सभी चारों आरोपी अब हिरासत में हैं और कांग्रेस, आम आदमी पार्टी और चंद्रशेखर आजाद की भीम आर्मी जैसी राजनीतिक पार्टियां अब विरोध प्रदर्शनों के जरिए राजनीतिक लाभ बटोरने की कोशिश कर रही हैं। समाजवादी पार्टी और बसपा सुप्रीमो मायावती ने सिर्फ ट्वीट करते हुए सरकार के खिलाफ बयान दिए है। फिलहाल ये लोग हवा का रूख भांप रहे हैं। क्रूरता और गैंगरेप की ये घटना आठ साल पहले निर्भया के साथ दिल्ली में हुई ऐसी ही घटना की याद दिलाती है। उस समय देशव्यापी विरोध प्रदर्शन हुए और सरकार को यौन उत्पीड़न के मामलों को रोकने के लिए कड़े कानून बनाने पड़े थे। इस मामले में दोषियों को सजा दिलाने में सात साल लग गए। एक लंबी कानूनी लड़ाई के बाद इस साल मार्च में निर्भया केस के दोषियों को फांसी दी गई थी।

हाथरस मामले में आईजी, डीएम और एसपी समेत लोकल पुलिस ने शुरुआत में इस बात से इनकार किया था कि लड़की के साथ रेप हुआ है। एक सीनियर अधिकारी ने दावा किया कि क्लिनिकल जांच में रेप का कोई सबूत नहीं मिला। वे इस बात पर अड़े रहे कि युवकों ने केवल लड़की के साथ दुर्व्यवहार किया है। लेकिन बाद में जनता के जबरदस्त दबाव के बाद सीनियर पुलिस अधिकारियों ने यह माना कि पीड़िता के साथ गैंगरेप हुआ था।

एक सीनियर अधिकारी ने दावा किया कि लड़की की जीभ आरोपियों ने नहीं काटी। इनका कहना था कि आरोपियों ने गला दबाया इसलिए दांतों के बीच आकर जीभ खुद कट गई। इस अधिकारी ने यह भी सवाल उठाया कि अगर पूरी जीभ कटी होती तो लड़की बयान कैसे देती? इससे ज्यादा शर्मनाक और दुखद रवैया और कुछ नहीं हो सकता। इससे ज्यादा संवेदनशून्यता और क्या हो सकती है? उस बेटी की तो जान चली गई और पुलिस अफसर जीभ की बात कर रहे हैं। वह बेटी तड़प-तड़प कर मर गई और अधिकारी रीढ़ की हड्डी की बात कर रहे हैं। चूंकि युवती और उसका परिवार गरीब है, क्या यह उचित है कि पुलिस जो चाहे सो बयान दे दे?

मैं नेताओं के बारे में ज्यादा कुछ नहीं कहना चाहता। अधिकांश नेताओं की नजर वोट पर है, उनके पास बेटी के माता-पिता और परिवार के सदस्यों के प्रति नकली हमदर्दी है। इसलिए नेताओं के बारे में कुछ कहना बेकार है। पुलिस की संवेदनशीलता के बारे भी मैंने आपको बता दिया। आपको बता दिया कि स्थानीय प्रशासन और पुलिस का क्या कहना था। मुझे अभी भी सीएम योगी आदित्यनाथ से उम्मीद है। मेरी योगी आदित्यनाथ से उम्मीद है कि वह इस बात को समझेंगे। इस बेटी के परिवार को और प्रदेश के लोगों को उम्मीद है कि योगी हाथरस की बेटी को जल्द से जल्द इंसाफ दिलाएंगे और इसमें देरी नहीं होगी।

Yogi must ensure that Hathras rapists are hanged without any delay

The nation is outraged over the horrific gangrape and torture of a 19-year-old Dalit girl, who succumbed to injuries in Delhi’s Safdarjang Hospital on Tuesday. Along with millions of Indians, I am deeply perturbed over the brutal manner in which four youths gangraped the girl in a field, then beat her up causing severe spinal injuries leaving her in a paralysed state, and tried to cut off her tongue.
The victim lay naked in the field groaning and it was her mother who came and covered her with her saree. For 15 days, the girl fought with death and ultimately succumbed to injuries in Delhi. The local administration did not come to her help. Throughout this period, the behaviour of local police was shoddy and insensitive, to say the least.
Let me put all the facts in perspective. On September 14 morning, the girl and her mother had gone to the field in Chandpa area to cut grass, when four youths pounced upon the girl, tied her face with a dupatta, took her to a ‘bajra’ (millet) field, gangraped her and beat her up severely causing spinal injuries. The unconscious girl was rescued by her mother. The local police did not reach the spot. She was taken by her family members to the police station.
The local police, instead of sending her to a hospital immediately in an ambulance to save her life, started questioning the victim’s family members in detail about the gangrape incident. Throughout this period, the girl was lying on the floor groaning, due to severe injuries. When the family members finally took her to the local health centre, she was immediately referred to Aligarh medical college, where her condition started deteriorating. Ultimately, the girl was brought to Delhi’s Safdarjang Hospital, where she died a day after being admitted.
On Tuesday night, there was more drama at Safdarjang Hospital, when UP police whisked away the victim’s body, despite protests by her family members, and cremated her at around 2.30 am at a funeral ground near Bool Garhi village, in the absence of her parents and close family members. Only a handful of villagers were brought by police to watch the cremation. The immediate family members were not allowed to have a last look at the girl either in Delhi or in their village before cremation.
UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said that a three-member Special Investigation Team headed by state Home Secretary, will probe the entire case and submit its report within seven days. Yogi said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for “strictest action” against the rape accused, and a fast track court will take up the case soon.
In my prime time show ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ on Tuesday night, I had played the audio of the victim describing the horrendous incident and naming the rapists. She was barely able to speak because of severe injuries to her tongue and also because of severe spinal injuries that caused paralysis.
Initially, the local police filed an FIR against only one youth, but they had to add the names of three others after public protests. The victim revealed the name of all four rapists while giving her statement a week after the incident. She was unable to speak initially because of serious injuries to her tongue.
All the four accused are now in custody, and political parties of different hues, like the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Chandrashekhar Azad’s Bhim Army, are now trying to make political capital out of it by organizing protests. The Samajwadi Party and BSP supremo Mayawati have, till now, kept a low profile by posting tweets condemning the incident.
This horrific gangrape and murder reminds us of a similar tragedy in Delhi with Nirbhaya, eight years ago. At that time, there were nationwide protests and the government had to make stringent laws to curb cases of sexual assault. It took seven years to bring the rapists to justice. The convicts were hanged in March this year after a prolonged legal battle.
In the Hathras case, the local police, including the IG, DM and SP initially denied that there was any rape. One senior official claimed that no evidence of rape was found after clinical examination. They stuck to the theory that the youths only misbehaved with the girl. But later, after tremendous public pressure, senior police officials admitted that the victim was gang raped.
One senior police official claimed that the assailants did not try to cut off the girl’s tongue. The official said, her tongue injury was caused because it came between her two jaws in course of assault. The officer questioned how the girl could have given her statement if her tongue was cut off. This is really shameful and insensitive to the core. On one hand, the girl died because of grave injuries and on the other hand, this police officer was saying how she could speak if her tongue was cut off. Since the girl and her family come from a poor family, the police officials thought they could get away by making such insensitive remarks.
I do not want to say much about our politicians. Most of them have an eye on the vote, and they have fake sympathy towards the girl’s parents and family members. You have heard what the local administration and police had to say. I have still hope from UP CM Yogi Adityanath. Let us hope he ensures that justice is given to the girl’s family and the perpetrators of this dastardly crime are hanged till death. The sooner, the better.

केंद्र को किसानों की शंकाएं दूर करनी चाहिए

नए कृषि कानून को लेकर किसानों के विरोध की आड़ में कुछ विपक्षी दलों द्वारा सड़कों पर ड्रामेबाजी की जा रही है। सोमवार को कड़ी सुरक्षा वाले दिल्ली के इंडिया गेट के पास राजपथ पर पंजाब यूथ कांग्रेस के कार्यकर्ताओं ने एक ट्रैक्टर में आग लगा दी। पुलिस के भारी सुरक्षा बंदोबस्त के बावजूद सुबह करीब 7.30 बजे कुछ कारों के काफिले के साथ एक ट्रक राजपथ पर पहुंचा जिसमें एक पुराना ट्रैक्टर था। ट्रक से ट्रैक्टर को सड़क पर उतारा गया और प्रदर्शनकारियों ने पुलिस के कोई कदम उठाने से पहले ही ट्रैक्टर में आग लगा दी। दमकलकर्मियों ने मौके पर पहुंचकर आग की लपटों को बुझाया।

इस पूरी घटना का वीडियो पंजाब यूथ कांग्रेस के फेसबुक पेज पर लाइव किया गया था और कुछ प्रदर्शनकारियों ने वीडियो को अपने सोशल मीडिया प्लेटफॉर्म पर भी पोस्ट किया था। दिल्ली पुलिस ने यूथ कांग्रेस के पांच कार्यकर्ताओं को गिरफ्तार कर लिया है, लेकिन पंजाब यूथ कांग्रेस का अध्यक्ष बरिंदर ढिल्लों फरार है।

इंडिया टीवी के रिपोर्टर्स जब ट्रैक्टर से जुड़े सारे तथ्यों को जोड़ते हुए मामले की तह तक पहुंचे तब पता चला कि यह ट्रैक्टर पंजाब यूथ कांग्रेस के कार्यकर्ता संदीप भुल्लर के नाम पर रजिस्टर्ड था। भुल्लर ने यह ट्रैक्टर दस दिन पहले ही एक किसान से खरीदा था। चूंकि कुछ दिन पहले (20 सितंबर को) पंजाब के फरीदकोट में और डेरा बस्सी में विरोध प्रदर्शन के दौरान ट्रैक्टर को आग लगाने की तस्वीरें आई थी। जब पुराने वीडियो को देखा गया तो उससे पता चला कि जिस ट्रैक्टर को डेरा बस्सी में जलाया गया था, उसी ट्रैक्टर में दिल्ली में आग लगाई गई। ट्रैक्टर का रजिस्ट्रेशन नंबर भी मैच कर गया। आधे जले हुए ट्रैक्टर को एक ट्रक में दिल्ली लाया गया था, और फिर सोमवार को इंडिया गेट के पास इसमें आग लगा दी गई।

कांग्रेस द्वारा विभिन्न राज्यों में इस तरह की फर्जी ड्रामेबाजी आम लोगों के मन में एक ऐसी धारणा बनाने के लिए की जा रही है ताकि लोगों को यह लगे कि किसान नए कृषि कानून के विरोध में अपने ट्रैक्टर जला रहे हैं। फिलहाल किसानों का विरोध प्रदर्शन केवल पंजाब और हरियाणा के कुछ हिस्सों तक ही सीमित रह गया है और स्थानीय नेताओं, बिचौलियों और कमीशन एजेंट्स जिनकी कमाई नए कृषि कानूनों के कारण बुरी तरह से प्रभावित हो रही है, प्रदर्शनकारी किसानों का हर तरह से समर्थन कर रहे हैं, हर स्तर पर उनकी मदद भी कर रहे हैं।

पंजाब और हरियाणा में आम किसानों को अफवाहों के जरिए गुमराह किया जा रहा है। किसानों से कहा जा रहा है कि एपीएमसी (कृषि उपज विपणन समिति) की मंडियां बंद हो जाएंगी और सरकार किसानों की उपज के लिए एमएसपी (न्यूनतम समर्थन मूल्य) तय करना बंद कर देगी। केंद्र सरकार ने समय-समय पर इन अफवाहों को निराधार बताया और खारिज कर दिया।

पंजाब में किसानों के विरोध प्रदर्शन की अगुवाई खुद वहां के मुख्यमंत्री कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह कर रहे हैं। वे सोमवार को पंजाब में शहीद भगत सिंह के पैतृक गांव खटकर कलां में 45 विधायकों और छह सांसदों के साथ धरने पर बैठे। इन लोगों ने केंद्र सरकार के खिलाफ नारेबाजी की और नए कानूनों को किसानों के गले में फांसी का फंदा बताया। उन्होंने कहा कि इससे जनवितरण प्रणाली पूरी तरह से खत्म हो जाएगी। कैप्टन ने कहा कि जिन राज्यो में इस तरह के कानून पहले से लागू हैं, जहां मंडियों को पहले ही खत्म किया जा चुका है, वहां के किसानों की हालत सरकार को देखनी चाहिए। उन्होंने सवाल किया कि क्या कॉरपोरेट घराने गरीबों को सब्सिडी पर अनाज देंगे? कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह ने कहा कि उनकी सरकार नए कृषि कानूनों को सुप्रीम कोर्ट में चुनौती देगी।

कैप्टन अमरिंदर सिंह ने किसानों को यह नहीं बताया कि उनकी अपनी पार्टी कांग्रेस ने 2019 के चुनाव घोषणापत्र में एपीएमसी से मुक्त करने का वादा किया था। वो सारी बातें जो कांग्रेस ने उस वक्त अपने चुनाव घोषणापत्र में कही थीं, अमरिंदर ने उसका जिक्र नहीं किया। हालांकि ये भी सही है कि कांग्रेस के नेता आज से नहीं बल्कि पिछले दस साल से मंडियों को खत्म करने के पक्ष में दलीलें दे रहे थे। उस वक्त बीजेपी के लोग इसका विरोध करते थे। लेकिन अब बीजेपी की सरकार ने जब वही स्टैंड ले लिया जो पहले कांग्रेस का था, तो कांग्रेस अपने पुराने स्टैंड को किसान विरोधी क्यों बता रही है? कांग्रेस क्यों कृषि बिल का जोरदार विरोध कर रही है?

यहां तक कि बीजेपी की सबसे पुरानी सहयोगी पार्टी और केंद्र की एनडीए सरकार में शामिल शिरोमणि अकाली दल भी एनडीए से अलग हो गया। शिरोमणि अकाली दल के नेताओं को नए कृषि कानून पर अपना जनाधार खिसकता हुआ नजर आया, उन्हें लगा कि इससे उनका किसानों का वोट बैंक टूट जाएगा इसलिए एनडीए से नाता तोड़ लिया। मैंने अपने रिपोर्टर को पंजाब और हरियाणा के गांवों में भेजा और सीधे किसानों से बात करने को कहा। किसानों का कहना है कि अगर मंडी खत्म हुई, आढ़तिए खत्म हुए तो नुकसान किसानों का होगा। क्योंकि किसानों का आढ़तियों से पीढ़ियों का रिश्ता होता है। बुरे वक्त में या जरूरत के वक्त में आढ़तिए किसानों की मदद करते हैं। अगर आढ़तिए खत्म हो गए तो किसान कहां जाएंगे।

ऐसा लग रहा है कि देश की कृषि में बदलाव को लेकर सरकार की बात अबतक पंजाब और हरियाणा के किसानों तक नहीं पहुंची है। किसान ये कह रहे हैं कि कुछ सालों तक कंपनियां उनकी फसल ज्यादा दाम में खरीदेंगी। जब मंडियां खत्म हो जाएंगी तो फिर कंपनियों की मोनोपॉली (एकाधिकार) होगी और फिर किसान औने-पौने दामों पर अपनी फसलें बड़ी-बड़ी कंपनियों को बेचने के लिए मजबूर होंगे। मुझे लगता है कि किसानों की शंकाओं को दूर करने के लिए कुछ और क्लेरीफिकेशन देने की जरूरत है.. हर पहलू को स्पष्ट करने और किसानों की बात सुनने की जरूरत है। क्योंकि जहां-जहां अटकलें लगाई जाती हैं, वहां अविश्वास बढ़ता है और इससे बचने का जितनी जल्दी उपाय करेंगे उतना बेहतर होगा।

Centre must remove fears from the minds of farmers

Fake dramas are being enacted on the streets by some opposition parties in the guise of farmers’ protest against farm bills. On Monday, a tractor was set ablaze by Punjab Youth Congress workers in the high-security zone of Delhi’s Rajpath, near India Gate. Despite presence of heavy police security, a few cars along with a truck carrying a tractor reached the spot at around 7.30 am. The tractor was dropped on the road from the truck, and the agitators set it ablaze even before the police could react. Fire brigade personnel reached the spot and doused the flames.
The video of the incident was posted live on the Facebook page of Punjab Youth Congress and some of the protesters also posted the video on their social media platforms. Delhi Police arrested five Youth Congress workers but Punjab Youth Congress president Barinder Dhillon is absconding.
India TV reporters pieced together facts relating to this tractor. It was found that the tractor was registered in the name of Sandeep Bhullar, a Punjab Youth Congress worker. He had purchased this tractor from a farmer nearly ten days ago. The tractor was first set ablaze in Dera Bassi, Punjab during a Congress farmers’ agitation on September20. The half-burnt tractor was brought to Delhi in a truck, and it was set ablaze again on Monday near India Gate.
Fake dramas like this are being organized by the Congress in different states to create an impression in the minds of common people that farmers are setting their tractors on fire in protest over the new farm bills. Farmers’ protests at present are confined only to some parts of Haryana and Punjab and there are allegations that local politicians, middlemen and commission agents, whose earnings are going to be adversely affected because of the new farm laws, are providing support to the agitating farmers.
The common farmers in Punjab and Haryana are being misled with rumours that the APMC (agricultural produce marketing committee) mandis will be closed down and the government will discontinue fixing of MSP (minimum support price) for foodgrains and other produces. The Centre has time and again rejected these rumours as baseless.
The farmers’ protests in Punjab are being openly led by the Congress chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, who sat on dharna on Monday with 45 MLAs and six MPs in Khatkar Kalan, the native village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh in Punjab. The Punjab CM described the new farm laws as “draconian” and alleged that the new farm laws would mean the end of public distribution system. He questioned whether corporate houses will subsidize foodgrains for the poor. He said, his government would challenge the new farm laws in Supreme Court.
What Capt. Amarinder Singh did not tell the farmers was that his own party Congress had promised to do away with APMCs in its 2019 election manifesto. For the last ten years, Congress leaders had been calling for putting an end to ‘kisan mandis’ and they were then being opposed by BJP leaders. Now that the BJP government has brought the new laws, the Congress has decided to oppose them tooth and nail.
Even the Shiromani Akali Dal, which was part of NDA government at the Centre, walked out as it found the ground slipping from under its feet. The SAD leaders feared a backlash from their farmers’ vote bank. I sent our reporter to speak to farmers in Haryana and Punjab. They said that they trusted their commission agents (aadhatiya) more because their families have been doing business with them for several generations. The farmers said, in times of financial distress, these commission agents used to help them with loans, but if they are removed from the scene altogether, farmers will have nowhere to go to.
It appears that the Centre’s message about transforming Indian agriculture is yet to reach the farmers in Punjab and Haryana. Farmers fear that in the beginning the corporates would start buying their produce at higher rates, but after the mandis cease to exist, the corporates will start dictating terms and will lower the prices, because they will then be having a monopoly. The farmers will then be forced to sell their grains to corporates at throwaway rates.
I feel that more clarifications need to be given to farmers in order to remove apprehensions from their minds. Rumours and speculations lead to mistrust, and the sooner this is avoided, the better.

सुशांत की मौत का मामला: सीबीआई को जांच के बारे में बताना चाहिए

बॉलीवुड अभिनेता सुशांत सिंह राजपूत का परिवार सीबीआई द्वारा अभिनेता की मौत मिस्ट्री की जांच में अबतक कोई ठोस प्रगति नहीं होने से उलझन में है। इसकी आंशका मैंने उसी दिन जताई थी जिस दिन सुशान्त की मौत के केस में नारकोटिक्स कंट्रोल ब्यूरो (NCB)की एंट्री हुई थी। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने सुशान्त की मौत मामले की जांच सीबीआई को सौंपी थी। लेकिन जिस तरह से इस केस में एनसीबी एक्टिव हुई। उसके कारण सुशान्त की मौत की मिस्ट्री का केस पीछे छूट गया। एनसीबी ने जांच को पूरी तरह से ड्रग्स एंगल की ओर मोड़ दिया। अभिनेत्री रिया चक्रवर्ती और उसका भाई ड्रग्स लेने के आरोप में अब अपने सहयोगियों के साथ जेल में है। वहीं इस कड़ी में दीपिका पादुकोण, सारा अली खान और श्रद्धा कपूर जैसी बॉलीवुड की अभिनेत्रियां एनसीबी के सामने हैं।

शुक्रवार को सुशांत के पिता के.के सिंह के वकील विकास सिंह ने मीडिया से कहा कि परिवार में इस बात को लेकर निराशा है कि जांच सही दिशा में नहीं जा रही है। उन्होंने कहा, ‘जांच होनी थी सुशांत की मौत की, लेकिन जिस तरह से जांच हो रही है उससे आशंका लग रही है कि सुशान्त की मौत का सच सामने आएगा भी या नहीं, सच्चाई कब पता लगेगी यह कोई नहीं कह सकता।’ उन्होंने कहा कि एनसीबी की जांच अब मुंबई पुलिस वाली जांच जैसी बनकर रह गई है। सभी स्टार्स को बुलाया जा रहा है और सुशांत का केस पीछे छूट गया है।

वकील विकास सिंह ने कहा, ‘एम्स के डॉक्टर ने मुझे बताया कि सुशांत की मौत गला घोंटने से हो सकती है। सीबीआई की जांच सही ट्रैक पर नहीं है। मैं यह नहीं कहूंगा कि मैं सीबीआई से खुश नहीं हूं, लेकिन सुशांत की मौत के मामले को कम महत्व मिलने से चिंतित हूं। एम्स फॉरेंसिक बोर्ड के रिस्पॉन्स को सार्वजनिक किया जाए, इससे सुशांत के परिवार को संतुष्टि मिलेगी। ‘

सुशांत परिवार के वकील ने आगे कहा, ‘आज हमलोग असहाय महसूस कर रहे हैं, हम ये नहीं जानते कि इस केस की जांच किस दिशा में जा रही है। एक महीने से ज्यादा का वक्त बीतने के बाद आज तक सीबीआई ने अपनी जांच के बारे में कुछ नहीं कहा, एक भी प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस कर ये नहीं बताया कि अबतक की जांच में उन्होंने क्या पाया। मैं जांच की रफ्तार से खुश नहीं हूं।’

विकास सिंह का कहना है कि एनसीबी बिना किसी ठोस कारण के बड़े-बड़े स्टार्स को समन कर रही है, पूछताछ कर रही है, जबकि इन स्टार्स के खिलाफ कोई केस बनता ही नहीं हैं। विकास सिंह ने एक और बड़ी बात कही। उन्होंने कहा, ‘रिया एक आरोपी है और आरोपी के बयान के आधार पर किसी को भी आरोपी कैसे बनाया जा सकता है? किसी को भी पूछताछ के लिए कैसे बुलाया जा सकता है? जिस तरह से पहले मुंबई पुलिस सुशांत के केस को लटका रही थी अब वही भूमिका एनसीबी की है।’

सुशांत की मौत के बाद उस समय मुंबई पुलिस बड़े-बड़े डायरेक्टर्स, प्रोड्यूसर्स और बड़ेृ-बड़े फिल्म स्टार्स को पूछताछ के लिए बुलाने लगी थी जिनका सुशांत की मौत से कोई मतलब नहीं था। यह पूरा मामला ऑफ द ट्रैक चला गया है। अगर इस वक्त जांच को ट्रैक पर नहीं लाया गया तो फिर न्याय मिलना मुश्किल है।’

इस बीच, एम्स फॉरेंसिक पैनल के प्रमुख डॉ. सुधीर गुप्ता ने गला घोंटने के आरोप को खारिज कर दिया है। डॉ. गुप्ता ने कहा, ‘लिगेचर मार्क और घटनास्थल का जायजा लेकर हत्या या आत्महत्या के किसी नतीजे तक नहीं पहुंचा जा सकता। डॉक्टरों के लिए यह मुश्किल है, और आम लोगों के लिए तो यह असंभव है कि वे तस्वीरों पर लिगेचर मार्क्स देखकर हत्या या आत्महत्या के नतीजे तक पहुंच सकें।

डॉक्टर सुधीर गुप्ता की ये बात सही लगती है कि तस्वीर देखकर इस नतीजे पर पहुंचना नामुमकिन है कि किसी की मौत आत्महत्या है या हत्या। लेकिन सवाल ये है कि सीबीआई इस मामले में खामोश क्यों है? सुशांत मौत मामले की जांच में सीबीआई ने अब तक हुई प्रगति के बारे में क्यों नहीं बताया? एनसीबी द्वारा अभिनेत्रियों को पूछताछ के लिए बुलाकर सुशांत की मौत मामले से पब्लिक का ध्यान हटाकर इसे ड्रग्स एंगल पर केंद्रित किया गया है।

जिस केस को लेकर पब्लिक में इतनी उत्सुकता है, उसकी जांच होने के बजाय दूसरी बातों की जांच हो रही है। लोग तो ये जानना चाहते हैं कि क्या सुशांत ने आत्महत्या की या उसकी हत्या हुई? मुंबई की पुलिस ने भी इस सवाल का जवाब नहीं दिया था और मुंबई पुलिस ‘नेपोटिज्म’ के नाम पर बड़े-बड़े फिल्म स्टार्स को बुलाकर उनसे पूछताछ करने लगी थी। एनसीबी अभिनेता और ड्रग पेडलर्स के बीच ड्रग नेक्सस की जांच करने लगी।

हैरत तो इस बात की है कि शुरू में तो सीबीआई ने तेजी दिखाई थी। सीबीआई की टीम तुरंत मुंबई पहुंच गई थी और रोज-रोज सुशांत के घर के स्टाफ को बुलाया जा रहा था। रिया, उसके भाई, मौजूदा और पूर्व स्टाफ से घंटों पूछताछ की गई है। इस केस से जुड़े अन्य लोगों से भी पूछताछ हुई लेकिन उसके बाद कुछ नहीं हुआ। एम्स की फॉरेंसिक टीम का दावा है कि उसने अपनी रिपोर्ट तैयार कर ली है, लेकिन सीबीआई इस रिपोर्ट को स्वीकार करने को तैयार नहीं है। यही वजह है कि सुशांत के परिवार के सदस्यों को इस केस की जांच को लेकर शक है। इसलिए सीबीआई को इस जांच में अबतक हुई प्रगति का खुलासा करना चाहिए।

Sushant death mystery: CBI must come out clean about its probe

Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s family is now sceptical about any concrete progress made in the actor’s death mystery probe by the CBI. I had expressed this apprehension the day the Narcotics Control Bureau gave a complete 360-degree turn to the probe by diverting it towards the drugs angle. Actor Rhea Chakraborty and her brother are now in jail along with their associates on drug abuse charge, and there is now a line-up of Bollywood actors like Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan and Shraddha Kapoor before the NCB.

On Friday, Vikas Singh, lawyer of K. K. Singh, father of Sushant Singh, told the media that the family is disappointed now that the investigation has been derailed. He said, ‘the family feels that the probe is going in such a way that the truth is not going to come out. The NCB probe has now become a Mumbai Police type investigation. All the stars are being called and Sushant’s case has taken a back seat.’

The lawyer said, ‘the AIIMS doctor told me that Sushant’s death could be due to strangulation. The CBI investigation is not on track. I will not say I am not happy with CBI, but I am worried about Sushant’s death case getting lesser importance. Let the AIIMS forensic board’s response be made public. This is what will satisfy his family.’

The family lawyer further said, ‘today we are helpless, we do not know in which way the case investigation is going. Till today, CBI has not done a single press briefing to reveal what they have found so far. I am not happy with the speed of the investigation.’

Vikas Singh said, the NCB is summoning big stars without any concrete reason. Moreover no case is made against these stars. He pointed out that Rhea Chakraborty was an accused. “How can others be summoned and charged based on the statements of an accused? It seems the NCB is playing the same role that was being played by Mumbai Police soon after Sushant’s death. Mumbai Police had then called several directors, producers and actors who had nothing to do with Sushant’s death. The entire probe is going off track. If it’s not brought back on track, we cannot expect justice.”

Meanwhile, Dr Sudhir Gupta, head of the AIIMS forensic panel, has rejected allegation of strangulation. Dr Gupta said, “no conclusion or conclusive opinion on homicide or suicide can be made looking at ligature marks and at the scene of occurrence. It is difficult for doctors, and next to impossible for general people to reach a conclusion by seeing ligature marks on photographs.”

Dr Gupta’s views may be correct but the question arises why the CBI about the progress made so far in its investigation into Sushant’s death mystery. Attention of the public has been diverted from the actor’s death mystery to the drugs angle by NCB summoning top female actors for questioning.

The people at large, who loved actor Sushant Singh Rajput, only wanted to know whether he committed suicide or was it a case of murder? Mumbai Police tried to give a ‘nepotism’ angle to its probe and questioned a long list of producers and directors. The NCB took up the probe into drug nexus between actors and drug peddlers.

The most surprising part is that the CBI made a swift beginning. Its team of experts reached Mumbai and questioned Rhea, her brother, current and former assistants of Sushant Singh and other people connected with this case. The AIIMS forensic team claims it has prepared its report, but the CBI is unwilling to accept this report. It is because of this Sushant’s family members have doubts about the probe. It is time CBI should come out clean and reveal the progress made so far in its probe.
