SHAHJAHAN ARREST : WHY MAMATA HAD TO BOW BEFORE COURT, PEOPLE
At last West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had to bow in the face of stern action by Calcutta High Court and also due to popular pressure from the women of Sandeshkhali. Trinamool Congress strongman Shahjahan Sheikh, accused of sexual abuse of women and land grab, was arrested by state police and produced before a local court on Thursday. He had been in hiding for the last 56 days after his goons assaulted a team of Enforcement Directorate on January 5. He was remanded to CID custody for ten days. There are 42 cases filed against him, mostly relating to forcible occupation of land and rape of women. Bengal police has arrested him on charge of attacking the ED team only. He was arrested in Minakhan, North 24-Parganas, only 30 km away from Sandeshkhali, despite nationwide outcry against him. There was celebration in Sandeshkhali on Thursday. Women blew conch shells and threw ‘gulaal’ (coloured powder) at one another, while men distributed sweets to celebrate the arrest of Shahjahan Sheikh. The women demanded that the Centre must make arrangements so that Shahjahan must remain behind bars forever. Visuals of Shahjahan Sheikh being “escorted” by state police to the Basirhat court, and the strongman walking with a swagger showing a victory sign, soon went viral on social media. Police officers were walking meekly behind the strongman, as he stridently walked inside the courtroom. Even before he was produced in court, his lawyer approached the Calcutta High Court seeking bail and requested for an urgent hearing. The High Court clearly told the lawyer that Shahjahan Sheikh was not an ordinary criminal. The High Court told the lawyer that he was underground for nearly two months, and there was no point seeking a bail soon after his arrest. The High Court told the lawyer that “he does not deserve any sympathy”. Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam told his counsel, “As many as 42 cases are pending against him, and for the next 10 years, you will have a wonderful job. You won’t have the time to handle any other brief. You will have five to seven juniors and a legal team for the next 10 years.” There are reports that the ED may seek custody of Shahjahan Sheikh after his 10 day police custody ends. Hours after his arrest, Trinamool Congress announced that Shahjahan Sheikh has been suspended from the party for the next six years. Shahjahan held the post of party convenor for Sandeshkhali assembly constituency. He is a member of Trinamool controlled North 24 Parganas zilla parishad (district council). After trying to protect Shahjahan for nearly two months, Mamata Banerjee has realized that the continuance of this strongman in her party could prove to be a political liability in the forthcoming elections and he was, therefore, suspended from the party.
शाहजहां की गिरफ्तारी : ममता को अदालत, जनता के सामने झुकना पड़ा
पश्चिम बंगाल में हाईकोर्ट की सख्ती और संदेशखाली की जनता के दबाव के सामने आखिरकार ममता बनर्जी को झुकना पड़ा. 56 दिन से फरार तृणमूल कांग्रेस के बाहुबली नेता शेख शाहजहां को बंगाल की पुलिस ने 48 घंटे में खोज निकाला, उसकी गिरफ्तारी हो गई और उसे दस दिन की हिरासत में CID के हवाले कर दिया गया. शेख शाहजहां के खिलाफ 42 केस दर्ज हैं जिनमें जमीनों पर कब्जे, महिलाओं के साथ बलात्कार, आम लोगों की संपत्ति हड़पने जैसे मामले हैं लेकिन बंगाल की पुलिस ने कोर्ट को बताया है कि शाहजहां को ED की टीम पर 5 जनवरी को किये गए हमले के मामले में गिरफ्तार किया गया है. मज़े की बात ये है कि शेख शाहजहां को पुलिस ने संदेशखाली से सिर्फ 30 किलोमीटर दूर, उत्तरी 24 परगना के मीनाखान से गिरफ्तार करने का दावा किया है. शेख शाहजहां की गिरफ्तारी की खबर जैसे ही संदेशखाली पहुंची, वहां के लोगों ने गुरुवार को जश्न मनाया. संदेशखाली में महिलाओं ने एक दूसरे को अबीर-गुलाल लगाया, शंख बजाया और थाली बजाकर डांस किया. इन महिलाओं ने कहा कि ये सही है कि शेख शाहजहां अभी सिर्फ गिरफ्तार हुआ, उसे सजा नहीं मिली है लेकिन न्याय की उम्मीद तो जगी है. उसके आतंक और जुल्म से अब उन्हे मुक्ति मिलेगी. कई महिलाओं ने कहा कि केन्द्र सरकार को ऐसा इंतजाम करना चाहिए जिससे शेख शाहजहां कभी जेल से बाहर न आ सके.
इन महिलाओं के मन में शाहजहां शेख का डर इतना क्यों है, इसका अंदाज़ा गुरुवार की तस्वीरों से लग गया. जब शाहजहां को बसीरहाट कोर्ट में पेश किया गया, तो पश्चिम बंगाल की पुलिस पूरी अकड़ के साथ आगे आगे चल रहा था, हाथ हिलाकर विक्ट्री साइन दिखा रहा था, और बंगाल पुलिस के अफसर उसके पीछे-पीछे चल रहे थे. कोर्ट में पुलिस ने जो रिमांड कॉपी पेश की, उसमें बताया गया कि शेख शाहजहां ने ये माना है कि 5 जनवरी को ईडी की टीम पर उसने हमला करवाया था, ED की टीम से जो सामान लूटा गया और जिन हथियारों से हमला किय़ा गया, वो उसने दूसरे राज्यों में छुपा रखे हैं, उसे बरामद करना है, ED की टीम पर हमले में शामिल शेख शाहजहां के साथियों को गिरफ्तार करना है, इसलिए उसे पुलिस की हिरासत में दिया जाए. इसके बाद कोर्ट ने शेख शाहजहां को दस दिन की पुलिस हिरासत में भेज दिया. लेकिन हैरानी की बात ये है कि शाहजहां की गिरफ्तारी के बाद उसे कोर्ट में पेश किया जाता, उससे पहले ही शाहजहां के वकील कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट पहुंच गए और जमानत की अर्जी फाइल कर दी. वकील ने कोर्ट से शीघ्र सुनवाई का अनुरोध किया. लेकिन मुख्य न्यायाधीश टी. एस. शिवज्ञानम ने साफ-साफ कहा कि शेख शाहजहां कोई छोटा मोटा अपराधी नहीं हैं, उसके खिलाफ रेप, जमीनों पर कब्जे, मारपीट और सरकारी टीम पर हमले जैसे 42 संगीन मामले हैं, वो 56 दिन तक फरार रहा, कोर्ट के कहने पर भी पेश नहीं हुआ और आप चाहते हैं कि गिरफ्तारी के तुरंत बाद उसे जमानत दे दी जाए, उसकी अर्जी पर तुरंत सुनवाई कर ली जाए, ये संभव नहीं है. मुख्य न्यायाधीश ने कहा कि कोर्ट को शेख शाहजहां जैसे अपराधी से कोई सहानुभूति नहीं है. मुख्य न्यायाधीश ने शाहजहां के वकील से कहा कि उसे कुछ दिन पुलिस की हिरासत में रहने दीजिए, तत्काल सुनवाई की कोई जरूरत नहीं हैं. शाम को तृणमूल कांग्रेस ने शाहजहां शेख को 6 साल के लिए पार्टी से निलम्बित कर दिया. शाहजहां शेख संदेशखाली विधानसभा क्षेत्र में पार्टी के संयोजक और जिला परिषद के सदस्य हैं. साफ है कि ममता बनर्जी दो महीने तक शाहजहां का बचाव करने के बाद अब समझ चुकी है कि अब वह पार्टी के लिए राजनीतिक बोझ बन सकता है, इसलिए पार्टी अब उससे पीछा छुड़ाना चाहती है.
हिमाचल : कांग्रेस आला कमान के सामने ‘इधर कुआं, उधर खाई’ वाला हाल
इस वक्त शिमला में ज़बरदस्त सियासी हलचल है. कांग्रेस अपनी सरकार बचाने की जीतोड़ कोशिश कर रही है. हालात को संभालने के लिए भूपेन्दर हुड्डा. भूपेश बघेल और डी. के. शिवकुमार शिमला में कांग्रेस के नेताओं से बात कर रहे हैं. कांग्रेस के सभी खेमों ने अपने अपने पत्ते चल दिए हैं और बीजेपी फिलहाल इंतज़ार करो और देखो की मुद्रा में है. राज्यसभा चुनाव में क्रास वोटिंग करने वाले छह बागी कांग्रेस विधायकों की सदस्यता को विधानसभा के स्पीकर ने समाप्त कर दिया. स्पीकर ने उन्हें पार्टी के व्हिप का पालन न करने के कारण सदस्यता के लिए अयोग्य ठहरा दिया. बुधवार को बीजेपी के 15 विधायकों को स्पीकर ने सस्पेंड कर दिया, फिर विपक्ष की गैरमौजूदगी में सुखविन्दर सिंह सुक्खू की सरकार ने बजट पास करवा लिया और विधानसभा की कार्यवाही अनिश्चित काल के लिए स्थगित कर दी गई. इसका मतलब ये हुआ कि फिलहाल सुक्खू की सरकार बच गई है लेकिन अब हिमाचल कांग्रेस की अध्यक्ष प्रतिभा सिंह और उनके बेटे विक्रमादित्य सिंह ने सीधा मोर्चा खोल दिया है. विक्रमादित्य सिंह ने सुक्खू की कैबिनेट से इस्तीफा दे दिया. विक्रमादित्य सिंह ने इल्जाम लगाया कि सुक्खू की सरकार में उनकी सुनी नहीं जाती. उनके पिता वीरभद्र सिंह की प्रतिमा स्थापित करने के लिए शिमला के मॉल में दो गज जमीन तक नहीं दी गई, कांग्रेस के सीनियर और जनाधार वाले विधायकों को किनारे कर दिया गया, इसलिए जो राज्यसभा के चुनाव में जो हुआ, वो हैरान करने वाला नहीं हैं. हालांकि विक्रामदित्य सिंह ने साफ साफ नहीं कहा, लेकिन वो चाहते हैं कि अब हाईकमान उनकी मां प्रतिभा सिंह को मुख्यमंत्री बनाए लेकिन उन्होंने प्रेक्षकों से बात करने के बाद इतना जरूर कह दिया कि उन्होंने इस्तीफा वापस नहीं लिया लेकिन फाइनल फैसला होने तक वो अपने इस्तीफे पर जोर नहीं डालेंगे. गुरुवार को मुख्यमंत्री सुक्खू ने अपने घर पर विधायकों को बुलाया लेकिन प्रतिभा सिंह और विक्रमादित्य सिंह उस बैठक में नहीं गये. विक्रमादित्य सिंह ने कहा है कि उन्होंने अपना इस्तीफ़ा वापस नहीं लिया, फिलहाल वो हाईकमान के फैसले का इंतजार करेंगे क्योंकि हाईकमान के सामने अब सारी स्थिति साफ है. हाईकमान के फैसले के बाद वो आगे की रणनीति बताएंगे. अब कांग्रेस के प्रेक्षकों के सामने सबसे बड़ी चुनौती दोनों गुटों के बीच मतभेद दूर करने की है. दूसरी तरफ बीजेपी के दोनों हाथों में लड्डू है. 68 सदस्यों वाली विधानसभा में 43 विधायकों वाली कांग्रेस अपने उम्मीदवार को नहीं जिता पाई, 25 विधायकों वाली बीजेपी ने अपने उम्मीदवार को जिता लिया, इसलिए बीजेपी के नेता खुश हैं. कांग्रेस के ज्यादातर नेता इसलिए खुश हैं कि राज्यसभा की सीट गई सो गई, कम से कम सरकार तो बच गई, लेकिन आगे की राह आसान नहीं है. ये सही है कि कांग्रेस के छह बागी विधायकों के अयोग्य ठहराये जाने से विधानसभा में बहुमत का आंकड़ा 32 हो गया है और कांग्रेस के पास अभी 34 विधायक हैं. इसलिए फिलहाल सरकार को कोई खतरा नहीं दिख रहा है. लेकिन अगर कांग्रेस ने मुख्यमंत्री को नहीं बदला तो विक्रमादित्य सिंह का गुट फिर नाराज़ हो जाएगा. अगर मुख्यमंत्री बदल दिया तो सुक्खू के समर्थक विधायक आंखे दिखाएंगे. इसलिए कांग्रेस आला कमान के लिए इधर कुंआ, उधऱ खाई वाली स्थिति है.
HIMACHAL PRADESH : CONGRESS IN CATCH-22 SITUATION
In damage control mode, Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, on Thursday met party MLAs at his residence, but the meeting was not attended by Late Virbhadra Singh’s widow Pratibha Singh and her son Vikramaditya Singh. Meanwhile, the Speaker of the assembly, Kuldeep Singh Pathania, has disqualified six Congress MLAs for defying party whip in the Rajya Sabha elections. All the six rebel Congress MLAs will now cease to be members of the assembly. Three top central observers, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Bhupesh Baghel and D K Shivakumar are in Shimla trying to bring about a patch-up between both camps. On Wednesday, Vikramaditya Singh had resigned from Sukhu’s cabinet but later retracted after persuasion by central observers. Vikramaditya Singh alleged that the Sukhu government did not grant even “two yards of land” to instal a statue of his father Late Virbhadra Singh at The Mall in Shimla. He also alleged that senior and mass-based leaders in the party are being ignored by the chief minister. Vikramaditya Singh said, he has not withdrawn his resignation, but he will not press on it till the time talks are over. Inside the Assembly on Wednesday, the Speaker suspended 15 BJP members and the House passed the state budget by voice vote. The House was then adjourned. The Speaker’s ruling disqualifying the six rebel Congress MLAs was a foregone conclusion. Naturally, the matter will go to court and it will be a long drawn one. For the moment, the Congress government in HP will be saved, but will Sukhu have to quit his throne? It is for the Congress High Command to decide. Looking at the tense relationships between Vikramaditya Singh and Sukhu, it looks difficult that a solution might come soon. Congress leaders are not ruling out change in leadership, but any decision will be taken only after the three central observers return to Delhi and submit their report. On the other hand, BJP is in a win-win situation. The Congress failed to get its candidate elected despite having 43 MLAs in a House of 68. BJP with 25 MLAs got its candidate elected. BJP leaders are happy for the time being, but Congress leaders, too, are happy that at least the government is saved for the time being. But the path ahead is not smooth. With 6 rebel MLAs disqualified, the majority mark in the House is now 32, and Congress presently has 34 MLAs. For the time being, there is no danger to the Congress government, but if the party does not change its chief minister, the faction led by Vikramaditya Singh will become restless. If the CM is changed, Sukhu’s supporters will create problems. For the Congress high command, it is a Catch-22 situation.

राजनीति की दुनिया में जिन नेताओं ने नरेन्द्र मोदी को हराने के लिए मोर्चा बनाया था, उन्हें मंगलवार को एक के बाद एक कई झटके लगे. उत्तर प्रदेश में अखिलेश यादव की समाजवादी पार्टी में बगावत हो गई. सपा के सात विधायकों ने क्रास वोटिंग करके बीजेपी के उम्मीदवार को जिता दिया. हिमाचल प्रदेश में कांग्रेस के 6 विधायकों ने खुलकर क्रास वोटिंग की , बीजेपी के उम्मीदवार हर्ष महाजन चुनाव जीत गए, अब सुखविन्दर सिंह सुक्खू की सरकार पर खतरा है. बिहार में कांग्रेस और RJD के तीन विधायकों ने पार्टी छोड़ दी, बीजेपी के साथ चले गए. महाराष्ट्र में एक कांग्रेस नेता ने पार्टी छोड़कर बीजेपी का साथ पकड़ लिया. गुजरात में भी कांग्रेस के एक नेता ने पाला बदल लिया. एक के बाद एक विपक्ष को कई झटके लगे. झटके भी ऐसे कि अब जवाब देते नहीं बन रहा है.
हिमाचल प्रदेश
सबसे तगड़ा हिमाचल प्रदेश के मुख्यमंत्री सुखविन्दर सिंह सुक्खु को लगा. हिमाचल प्रदेश में कांग्रेस की सरकार है, 68 में से चालीस विधायक कांग्रेस के हैं, बीजेपी के पास सिर्फ 25 विधायक हैं. इसके बाद भी बीजेपी राज्यसभा के चुनाव में अपने उम्मीदावर हर्ष महाजन को जिताने में कामयाब रही. कांग्रेस के 6 विधायकों ने क्रॉस वोटिंग की. कांग्रेस के अभिषेक मनु सिंघवी और बीजेपी के हर्ष महाजन, दोनों को 34-34 वोट मिले हैं, मैच टाई हुआ, उसके बाद ड्रा के जरिए हर्ष महाजन को विजयी घोषित कर दिया गया और अभिषेक मनु सिंघवी ने अपनी हार स्वीकार कर ली. ये कांग्रेस की बड़ी हार है क्योंकि 68 सीटों वाली विधानसभा में 40 विधायक कांग्रेस के हैं. तीन निर्दलीयों का समर्थन कांग्रेस को था. इसके बाद भी सिंघवी को सिर्फ 34 वोट मिले जबकि महाजन को 9 वोट ज्यादा मिले क्योंकि कांग्रेस के छह विधायकों ने क्रास वोट किया और तीन निर्दलीयों ने भी महाजन के पक्ष में वोट दिया. हिमाचल में कांग्रेस के साथ खेल होने वाला है, इसका अंदाजा उसी दिन लग गया था जब हर्ष महाजन दो हफ्ते पहले कांग्रेस छोड़कर बीजेपी में शामिल हो गए और बीजेपी ने उन्हें राज्यसभा का उम्मीदवार बनाया. काँग्रेस सिंघवी का जीतना पक्का मान कर आराम से बैठी रही. बीजेपी ने जब राज्यसभा में हर्ष महाजन को उतारा तो भी पार्टी के नेता सतर्क नहीं हुए. इस बात की खबरें आ रही थीं कि हर्ष महाजन को कांग्रेस तोड़ने के लिए लाया गया है लेकिन तो भी काँग्रेस के नेता निश्चिंत रहे. हालत ये हो गई कि जो विधायक अभिषेक मनु सिंघवी के नामांकन में प्रस्तावक थे, उन्होंने भी सिंघवी को वोट नहीं दिया, क्रॉस वोटिंग की. हर्ष महाजन कांग्रेस के पूर्व सीएम स्वर्गीय वीरभद्र सिंह के करीबी रहे हैं. पिछले चुनाव में कांग्रेस की जीत के बाद वीरभद्र सिंह की पत्नी प्रतिभा सिंह मुख्यमंत्री पद की दावेदार थीं. उनके बेटे विक्रमादित्य सिंह सुक्खू सरकार में मंत्री हैं. माना जा रहा है कि ये दोनों अंदर ही अंदर हर्ष महाजन का समर्थन कर रहे हैं. इसीलिए राज्यसभा चुनाव में हर्ष महाजन की जीत हिमाचल की सरकार के लिए खतरा है. अगर ये हुआ तो कांग्रेस के लिए एक बड़ी परेशानी का सबब होगा.
उत्तर प्रदेश
उत्तर प्रदेश के राज्यसभा चुनाव में बीजेपी अपने सभी आठ उम्मीदवारों को जिताने में कामयाब रही. समाजवादी पार्टी के दो उम्मीदवार जीते. सपा के तीसरे उम्मीदवार आलोक रंजन बीजेपी के संजय सेठ से दस वोट से हार गए. सपा को तीसरा उम्मीदवार जिताने के लिए सिर्फ तीन वोट चाहिए थे, दूसरी तरफ बीजेपी को आठवें उम्मीदवार संजय सेठ को जिताने के लिए नौ वोटों की जरूरत थी. इसके बाद बीजेपी ने दस वोट के अंतर से समाजवादी पार्टी के उम्मीदवार को हराया. ये अखिलेश यादव के लिए बहुत बड़ी परेशानी हैं. मंगलवार को समाजवादी पार्टी के छह बागी विधायक उपमुख्यमंत्री ब्रजेश पाठक के साथ विधानसभा में वोट डालने पहुंचे. सबको समझ में आ गया था कि क्या होने जा रहा है. सपा के सात विधायक सोमवार की रात को अखिलेश यादव की डिनर मीटिंग में नहीं पहुंचे थे और उन्हीं विधायकों ने मंगलवार को खेल कर दिया. सबसे बड़ा उलटफेर किया समाजवादी पार्टी के चीफ व्हिप मनोज पांडेय ने. मनोज पांडेय रायबरेली जिले की ऊंचाहार सीट से विधायक हैं. उन्होंने सबसे पहले चीफ व्हिप के पद से इस्तीफा दिया, इसके बाद सपा के तीन विधायक राकेश पांडेय, अभय सिंह और राकेश प्रताप सिंह एक साथ विधानसभा पहुंचे और सपा कार्यालय जाने की बजाए सीधे मंत्रियों से मिले. इनके अलावा मनोज पांडेय, पूजा पाल, आशुतोष मौर्य और विनोद चतुर्वेदी भी वोट डालने के लिए बीजेपी नेताओं के साथ लाइन में लगे दिखाई दिए. इसके बाद समाजवादी पार्टी की रही-सही उम्मीदें टूट गईं. दोपहर तक अखिलेश यादव भी समझ गए थे कि उनकी पार्टी में विद्रोह जैसी स्थिति है. अखिलेश यादव ने सोशल मीडिया पर लिखा, “ हमारी राज्यसभा की तीसरी सीट दरअसल सच्चे साथियों की पहचान करने की परीक्षा थी और ये जानने की कि कौन-कौन दिल से PDA के साथ और कौन अंतरात्मा से पिछड़े, दलित और असल्पसंख्यकों के खिलाफ है. अब सब कुछ साफ है. यही तीसरी सीट की जीत है.” बीजेपी खेमे में सपा के तीसरे उम्मीदवार को हराने के लिए फूलप्रूफ प्लानिंग की गई थी. और योगी आदित्यनाथ के चक्रव्यूह में अखिलेश यादव की साइकिल बुरी तरह फंस गई. योगी सरकार में मंत्री सुरेश खन्ना सपा विधायकों के साथ लगातार संपर्क में रहे लेकिन अखिलेश यादव को कानों कानों खबर नहीं लगी. वोटिंग के बाद सुरेश खन्ना ने कहा कि हारने वाले तो आरोप लगाते हैं इसका बुरा क्या मानना लेकिन विधायकों ने अंतरात्मा की आवाज़ पर वोट डाला है, इसमें कुछ भी ग़लत नहीं है. समाजवादी पार्टी में किसी नेता ने सपने में भी नहीं सोचा था कि मनोज पांडेय, जो पार्टी के मुख्य सचेतक हैं, वो पाला बदल लेंगे. मनोज पांडेय रायबरेली ज़िले की ऊंचाहार सीट से तीन बार चुनाव जीत चुके हैं. 2012 में ऊंचाहार विधानसभा सीट अस्तित्व में आई थी. मनोज पांडेय तब से लगातर चुनाव जीत रहे हैं, अखिलेश सरकार में मंत्री रहे, इसलिए मनोज पांडे ने जब अपना इस्तीफा भेजा तो ये अखिलेश के लिए बड़ा झटका था. राज्यसभा चुनाव में जो हुआ उसका असर लोकसभा चुनाव तक दिखेगा. लोकसभा चुनाव से पहले अखिलेश और राहुल गांधी के लिए ये बड़ा झटका है. योगी की रणनीति की ये बड़ी जीत है. बगावत समाजवादी पार्टी में हुई है, लेकिन लोकसभा चुनाव में इसका नुकसान समाजवादी पार्टी के साथ साथ कांग्रेस को हो सकता है. मनोज पांडेय रायबरेली के बड़े नेता हैं. 2017 में रायबरेली लोकसभा सीट के अंदर आने वाली सात में छह सीटें समाजवादी पार्टी ने जीती थीं लेकिन 2022 के चुनाव में बीजेपी ने पूरी ताकत लगाई. लेकिन इसके बाद भी मनोज पांडे को नहीं हरा पाई. एक सीट को छोड़कर बाकी पांच सीटें समाजवादी पार्टी से छीन लीं. अब मनोज पांडे भी बीजेपी के साथ होंगे. चर्चा ये है कि इस बार राहुल गांधी अमेठी की बजाए रायबरेली से चुनाव लड़ सकते हैं और बीजेपी राहुल के मुकाबले में मनोज पांडेय को उतार सकती है. अगर ऐसा हुआ तो कांग्रेस के हाथ से रायबरेली सीट भी निकल सकती है. वैसे ये भविष्य की बात है.

क्रॉस वोटिंग तो कर्नाटक में भी हुई लेकिन इससे चुनाव के नतीजों पर कोई फ़र्क़ नहीं पड़ा. कर्नाटक में राज्यसभा की चार सीटों के लिए मतदान हुआ, कांग्रेस के तीन और बीजेपी को एक सीट पर जीत मिली. जनता दल-एस का उम्मीदवार चुनाव हार गया. विधानसभा में कुल 224 सीटें हैं, हर उम्मीदवार को जीत के लिए 46 वोट चाहिए थे. कांग्रेस ने अजय माकन, नासिर हुसैन और जीसी चंद्रशेखर को मैदान में उतारा था, वहीं बीजेपी ने नारायण बंदागे को अपना उम्मीदवार बनाया था. ये चारों चुनाव जीत गए. अपने उम्मीदवार को जिताने के बाद, बीजेपी के पास 20 विधायकों के वोट सरप्लस थे. जेडीएस और बीजेपी के मिलाकर 39 विधायक होते हैं. अगर सात वोट और मिल जाते, तो जेडीएस उम्मीदवार कुपेंद्र रेड्डी भी जीत जाते लेकिन कांग्रेस के किसी भी विधायक ने क्रॉस वोटिंग नहीं की. उल्टे बीजेपी के एसटी सोमशेखर ने कांग्रेस के पक्ष में वोट दिया. वहीं एक और विधायक शिवराम हेब्बार वोट डालने ही नहीं आए. यूपी और हिमाचल में तो विपक्ष के नेता बीजेपी पर विधायकों को खरीदने का इल्जाम लगा रहे हैं लेकिन कर्नाटक में कांग्रेस की सरकार है. बीजेपी के दो विधायकों ने गड़बड़ी की. तो क्या ये माना जाए कि कर्नाटक में कांग्रेस ने विधायकों को खरीदा, दबाव डाला? राज्यसभा के चुनाव में पार्टी के चुनाव निशान की बजाए उम्मीदवारों के नाम पर वोट डाले जाते हैं. इसलिए कैंडीडेट सिलैक्शन और मैनेजमेंट का बड़ा रोल होता है. यूपी में अखिलेश यादव और हिमाचल में सुखविन्दर सिंहे सुक्खू ने बेहतर मेंजनमेंट नहीं किया, वहां पार्टी टूट गई. कर्नाटक में डी के शिवकुमार का मैनेजमेंट बीजेपी पर भारी पड़ा और कांग्रेस ने तीनों उम्मीदवार जिता लिए लेकिन हार-जीत से सबक सीखने की बजाय, आत्ममंथन करने की बजाय कांग्रेस के नेता बीजेपी पर आरोप लगा रहे हैं. इससे तो हालात नहीं सुधरेंगे.
बिहार
बिहार में RJD विधायक संगीता कुमारी और कांग्रेस के 2 विधायक मुरारी प्रसाद गौतम और सिद्धार्थ सौरव बीजेपी खेमे में शामिल हो गए. ये तीनों उपमुख्यमंत्री सम्राट चौधरी के साथ विधानसभा में पहुंचे. तीनों विधायक विपक्ष में बैठने की बजाय सत्ता पक्ष की सीट पर जाकर बैठे. महागठबंधन के लिए ये दूसरा झटका है. 12 फरवरी को नीतीश सरकार के विश्वास प्रस्ताव के दौरान भी आरजेडी के तीन विधायक सत्ता पक्ष की तरफ जाकर बैठे थे और आज तीन विधायक और टूट गए. संगीता देवी मोहनिया से आरजेडी की दलित विधायक हैं. उन्होंने कहा कि आरजेडी में दलितों का सम्मान नहीं हो रहा था. चर्चा तो ये है कि अगले कुछ दिनों में कांग्रेस और आरजेडी के कुछ और विधायक बीजेपी में शामिल हो सकते हैं. बिहार में कांग्रेस के कुल 19 विधायक हैं और दावा ये किया जा रहा है कि लोकसभा चुनाव से पहले 19 में से 12 विधायक कांग्रेस छोड़ सकते हैं. कुछ विधायक बजट सत्र में और कुछ उसके बाद बीजेपी में शामिल हो सकते हैं. चर्चा ये है कि बीजेपी कांग्रेस छोड़ कर आये विधायक मुरारी गौतम को सासाराम से लोकसभा चुनाव लड़वा सकती है. मुरारी गौतम अभी रोहतास जिले की चेनारी से विधायक हैं. वो महागठबंधन सरकार में मंत्री भी रह चुके हैं.
महाराष्ट्र
बिहार के अलावा महाराष्ट्र में प्रदेश कांग्रेस के कार्यकारी अध्यक्ष बसवराज पाटिल ने भी पार्टी छोड़ दी और वह उपमुख्यमंत्री देवेंद्र उडनवीस की मोजूदगी में बीजेपी में शामिल हो गए. पाटिल मंत्री रह चुके हैं और वह मराठवाड़ा में एक प्रमुख लिंगायत नेता हैं. इससे पहले पूर्व सीएम अशोक चह्वाण कांग्रेस छोड़ कर बीजेपी में शामिल हो गए और मिलिंद देवड़ा कांग्रेस छोड़ कर सीएम एकनाथ शइंदे की शिव सेना में शामिल हो गए. दोनों राज्य सभा के लिए निर्वार्चित भी हो गए. बाबा सिद्दिकी कांग्रेस से इस्तीफा देकर अजित पवार की एनसीपी में शामिल हो गए.
गुजरात
गुजरात कांग्रेस के राज्यसभा सांसद और पूर्व केंद्रीय मंत्री नारणभाई राठवा भी कांग्रेस छोड़कर बीजेपी में शामिल हो गए. नारणभाई राठवा गुजरात के छोटा उदेपुर के एक प्रमुख नेता हैं. इस समय बिहार, महाराष्ट्र, गुजरात में सीट शेयरिंग पर पेंच फंसा हुआ है. दिल्ली में तो अरविन्द केजरीवाल ने अपनी तरफ से दिल्ली और हरियाणा में पार्टी के उम्मीदवारों के नामों का एलान भी कर दिया .लेकिन कांग्रेस के नेता सिर्फ खामोशी से तमाशा देख रहे हैं क्योंकि कोई फैसला राहुल गांधी की अनुमति के बगैर हो नहीं सकता. राहुल गांधी इंग्लैड में हैं.कैम्ब्रिज विश्वविद्यालय में दो लेक्चर देने के बाद भारत लौटेंगे और उसके बाद भारत जोडो न्याय यात्रा पर निकल जाएंगे. अब कांग्रेस के नेताओं का कहना है कि वो करें तो क्या करें? कहें तो किससे कहें? इसलिए जिनकी मजबूरी है, कोई विकल्प नहीं है, वो चुपचाप वक्त का इंतजार कर रहे हैं. और जिनको मौका मिल रहा है, वो अपना रास्ता अलग कर रहे हैं. कांग्रेस के सामने मुश्किल ये है कि राहुल हालात की गंभीरता को समझ नहीं रहे और मुकाबला नरेन्द्र मोदी से है. कांग्रेस अभी तक सीट शेयरिंग पर बात फाइनल नहीं कर पाई है और उधर नरेन्द्र मोदी ने केरल, तमिलनाडु, गुजरात, उत्तर प्रदेश में कैंपेन शुरू कर दिया है.
AHEAD OF LS POLLS, CONGRESS FACING REVOLTS IN STATES
Tuesday (February 27) was a day of severe jolts for the Congress-led anti-Modi alliance. There were revolts in the Congress and Samajwadi Party, the two main constituents of the alliance. Seven Congress MLAs voted for BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan in the Rajya Sabha election resulting in the defeat of Congress candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The Congress government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu seemed to have lost its majority. Political developments are taking at a fast pace in Shimla, with the Congress high command sending its top troubleshooters to avert the crisis. In Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav lost his political prestige, when six of his party MLAs voted for the BJP, resulting in BJP winning 8 seats, while Samajwadi Party could manage to win only two seats. The third SP candidate lost. Reports of floor crossing also came from Bihar, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
HIMACHAL PRADESH
A revolt had been brewing in the Congress party in Himachal Pradesh for the last two weeks, when Harsh Mahajan, a key former aide of late CM Virbhadra Singh, joined BJP and became its candidate for Rajya Sabha election. In the assembly, BJP has 25 MLAs while the Congress has 43 MLAs. The Congress was overconfident about the victory of its candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Their leaders did not become alert, when they noticed that one of their own men Harsh Mahajan has been fielded by BJP. There were already reports that the BJP had fielded Mahajan in order to bring about a split in Congress. Yet the top brass of Congress remained complacent. The most interesting part was that the Congress MLA, who was the proposer for Singhvi’s nomination, cast his vote for BJP. Harsh Mahajan got the votes of six rebel Congress MLAs and three independents. In the end, both candidates secured 34 votes each, and the tie was finally broken through draw of lots. Mahajan was declared elected. In the 2022 assembly election, Late Virbhadra Singh’s widow Pratibha Singh was the main claimant for CM post. Her son Vikramaditya Singh is a minister in Sukhu’s government. Political circles say, both the mother-son duo indirectly supported the revolt. If the Congress government falls, it will be a big embarrassment for the party. In my prime time show ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ on Tuesday night, I asked Jairam Thakur, BJP leader and former CM, why the Congress MLAs revolted. He replied, “this happened because of their pent-up anger. For the last 14 months, they were raising their voices inside and outside the Assembly, but the chief minister was not listening to them. At last, these MLAs listened to their voice of conscience. There is nothing hanky-panky about it….The chief minister should resign on moral grounds.” I asked Thakur how his party would be able to get support of more legislators to stake claim to form a government, given that they have got 34 votes now. Naturally, Thakur was reticent and he said he would not reveal his plans.
UTTAR PRADESH
The revolt in UP Samajwadi Party was also brewing when seven SP MLAs did not attend a dinner hosted by party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday night on the eve of Rajya Sabha elections. On Tuesday, when polling began, the seven SP MLAs went to the assembly with Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak to cast their vote. The biggest upset was when SP chief whip Manoj Pandey, the MLA from Unchahar seat in Raebareli district, resigned from his post and met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. All the seven MLAs claimed they voted according to their “conscience”, but their quotes in front of the cameras revealed their true intention. Akhilesh Yadav knew that his third candidate was going to be defeated because of the revolt. He took to social media to say that he had fielded the third candidate “to test the loyalty” of his MLAs. Later, he alleged in front of cameras that BJP tried to lure his party legislators, and that the MLAs could not resist pressures. The crossvoting in UP Rajya Sabha elections will surely have its effect on this year’s Lok Sabha polls. This is a severe jolt to both Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi, and a big success to Yogi Adityanath’s management strategy. The revolt in SP may not only cause harm to Akhilesh Yadav, but also the Congress. Manoj Pandey, who resigned as SP chief whip, is a formidable leader from Raebareli. In the 2017 assembly elections, SP had won six out of seven assembly seats that fall inside Raebareli parliamentary constituency. In the 2022 assembly elections, BJP tried its best and snatched five seats from SP, but it could not defeat Manoj Pandey. There are speculations that Rahul Gandhi may contest from Raebareli instead of Amethi, and BJP may field Manoj Pandey to take on Rahul Gandhi. If that happens, Congress may also lose Sonia Gandhi’s Raebareli seat. Of course, anything can happen in future.
KARNATAKA
There was crossvoting in Karnataka too, but it did not affect the overall results. Congress won three seats and the BJP won one seat. The Janata Dal(S) candidate lost. BJP had 20 surplus votes to get the JD-S candidate Kupendra Reddy elected, but Reddy fell short of seven votes. None of the Congress legislators crossvoted, but BJP’s S T Somashekhar voted in favour of Congress. Another BJP MLA Shivaram Hebbar did not come to cast his vote. Congress is presently ruling Karnataka and two BJP MLAs did the mischief. So, should we assume that the Congress “bought” both the MLAs or put pressure on them? In Rajya Sabha elections, votes are not cast in favour of symbols but in favour of candidates. Hence, candidate selection and vote management play a major role. Akhilesh Yadav in UP and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in HP did not manage the elections properly and the parties faced revolts. In Karanataka, Congress strongman D K Shivkumar properly managed the election and all the three Congress candidates won. So, instead of learning lessons from defeats and doing introspection, Congress leaders are blaming the BJP for “purchasing” candidates. This will not help the party in the long run.
BIHAR
On Tuesday, in Bihar, two Congress MLAs – Murari Prasad Gautam and Siddharth Saurabh and one RJD MLA Sangeeta Kumari joined BJP. They were welcomed to the party by Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary and were assigned treasury benches. All the three had voted in favour of the government defying party whip during vote on supplementary budget. This was the second jolt to INDIA in Bihar. On February 12, 3 RJD MLAs had joined the BJP camp during the debate on motion of confidence by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Sangeeta Kumari is a Dalit leader from Mohania. At present, there are 19 Congress MLAs ion Bihar and there are speculations that twelve of them could leave the party before the Lok Sabha elections. BJP may field Murari Prasad Gautam, presently MLA from Rohtas district, from Sasaram Lok Sabha constituency.
MAHARASHTRA
In another jolt to the Congress, Maharashtra state party working president Basavaraj Patil Murmukar on Tuesday resigned from the party and joined BJP in the presence of Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. A two-time MLA from Ausa, he is a prominent Lingayat leader from Marathwada region. A former minister, Basavaraj Patil’s quitting follows a chain of resignations in Maharashtra Congress. Earlier, former CM Ashok Chavan, former Union Minister Milind Deora and senior party leader Baba Siddique had quit the Congress. Ashok Chavan joined BJP, while Milind Deora joined Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena. Both have been elected to Rajya Sabha. Baba Siddique joined the NCP led by Ajit Pawar.
GUJARAT
In Gujarat, Rajya Sabha MP Naranbhai Rathwa resigned from Congress and joined BJP along with his son and supporters on Tuesday. He is a veteran Congress leader from Chhota Udepur and his joining the BJP is a major blow for Congress.
With so many desertions and revolts, the Congress high command appears to be in a state of stupor. Seat sharing talks in Bihar, Maharashtra and Gujarat are yet to be complete. Arvind Kejriwal has alreeady announced names of AAP candidates from Delhi and Haryana. The Congress leadership is waiting for a green signal from Rahul Gandhi, who has taken a five-day break from Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, to visit England to deliver two lectures at the Cambridge University. He will return to India after two days and resume his Yatra from March 2. Congress leaders are now left in a quandary. They are unable to decide whom to go to get clearances. Leaders who do not have any other options are waiting silently, and those who are getting opportunities, are carving their own paths. The problem before Congress leadership is: Rahul Gandhi is not realizing the gravity of the situation since his main battle is against Narendra Modi. Congress is yet to finalize seat-sharing in the states, and on the other hand, Narendra Modi is already off the mark and he is busy with his campaign in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat and UP.
संदेशखाली : ममता को अब जनता की अदालत में सफाई देनी पड़ेगी
पहली बार ममता बनर्जी पर जनता का दबाव साफ दिखाई दे रहा है. पश्चिम बंगाल की पुलिस अब मजबूरी में संदेशखाली में महिलाओं के साथ जुल्म करने वाले, जमीनों पर कब्जा करने वाले तृणमूल कांग्रेस के नेता शेख शाहजहां को गिरफ्तार करने वाली है. अब तृणमूल कांग्रेस के नेताओं ने भी कहना शुरू कर दिया है कि शेख शाहजहां की गिरफ्तारी जरूर होगी, अगर किसी ने कानून के खिलाफ काम किया है, तो उसे सरकार माफ नहीं करेगी. दरअसल बंगाल पुलिस को कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट ने सोमवार को जम कर फटकार लगाई. कोर्ट ने कहा कि शेख शाहजहां की गिरफ्तारी पर कोर्ट के स्टे की बात सफेद झूठ है, अदालत ने कोई रोक नहीं लगाई है, शाहजहां को तुरंत गिरफ्तार करना चाहिए. इसके बाद बंगाल पुलिस ने संकेत दिए कि शेख शाहजहां की गिरफ्तारी हो सकती है. इससे पहले पुलिस ने उसके एक और साथी को गिरफ्तार कर लिया है. संदेशखाली में पुलिस के खिलाफ लोगों की नाराजगी बढ़ रही है. अब संदेशखाली की महिलाएं खुद कानून हाथ में ले रही हैं. संदेशखाली में तृणमूल कांग्रेस के एक स्थानीय नेता के घर पर आम लोगों ने सोमवार को हमला किया. जिस शंकर सरदार के घर पर हमला हुआ, वो शेख शाहजहां का करीबी है. बंगाल के राज्यपाल सी. के. आंनद बोस ने भी कहा है कि हाईकोर्ट के आदेश के बाद स्थिति बिल्कुल साफ है, अगर अब भी पुलिस एक्शन नहीं लेती, शेख शाहजहां के गैरकानूनी साम्राज्य को खत्म नहीं करती, तो फिर वो जो जरूरी होंगे, वो सारे कदम उठाएंगे. सोमवार को हाई कोर्ट ने बंगाल सरकार से पूछा कि शेख शाहजहां के खिलाफ चार साल से संगीन आरोपों में कई केस दर्ज हैं, उसे अब तक गिरफ्तार क्यों नहीं किया गया? पुलिस अब तक क्या कर रही थी? कम से कम अब बिना देर किए पुलिस को कार्रवाई करनी चाहिए. हालांकि अब लग रहा है कि ममता की पुलिस संदेशखाली में तृणमूल कांग्रेस के गुंडों पर नकेल कसेगी, लेकिन सवाल ये है कि आखिर पुलिस इतनी देर से क्यों जागी है? अब तक संदेशखाली के लोगों को तृणमूल कांग्रेस के नेता बीजेपी का एजेंट क्यों बता रहे थे? ममता बनर्जी संदेशखाली की महिलाओं की आपबीती को मनगढ़ंत कहानी क्यों बता रही थी? अब अचानक ममता का रुख क्यों बदला? अगर शेख शाहजहां राशन घोटाले में जांच के लिए पहुंची ED की टीम पर हमला न करवाता तो शायद ये मामला दुनिया के सामने ही न आता. ED की टीम पर हमले के बाद पूरा देश शेख शाहजहां का नाम जान गया. पैरा मिलिट्री फोर्स लगी, बीजेपी के नेताओ के दौरे हुए, कोर्ट ने दखल दिया तो संदेशखाली के लोगों को लगा कि उन्हें न्याय मिल सकता है, शेख शाहजहां के जुल्मों से छुटकारा मिल सकता है. इसलिए उसके काले कारनामे सामने आने लगे. पता चला कि संदेशखाली की ज्यादातर जमीनों पर शेख शाहजहां और उसके गुंडों ने जबरन कब्जा कर रखा है, हर परिवार से हफ्ता वसूलता है. जो शाहजहां को कट मनी नहीं देता, वो उसका राशन पानी बंद करवा देता है, सरकारी राशन से लोगों को शेख शाहजहां की परमीशन के बिना राशन नहीं मिलता है. और तो और, शेख शाहजहां के गुंडे वहां की महिलाओं और लड़कियों को उठवा लेते हैं, उनके साथ रेप किया जाता है और मुंह खोलने पर परिवार वालों की हत्या की धमकी दी जाती है. इलाके की पुलिस शेख शाहजहां के इशारे पर चलती है. ये तमाम किस्से एक-एक करके सामने आए, लोग चिल्लाते रहे लेकिन ममता की पुलिस ने शेख शाहजहां के खिलाफ कोई एक्शन नहीं लिया. इसके बाद महिलाओं के वीडियो सामने आ गए, महिलाओं ने अपनी आपबीती सुनाई, उसके बाद भी ममता ने एक्शन नहीं लिया. अगर ममता उसी दिन एक्शन लेतीं, ममता बनर्जी महिलाओं की बात को झूठ न बताती, शेख शाहजहां की गिरफ्तारी का आदेश देती, तो शायद ये मामला इतना न बढ़ता. लेकिन ममता इसे राजनीतिक रंग देने की कोशिश करती रहीं. जब मामला हाथ से निकल गया, ममता को लगने लगा कि मुस्लिम वोटों के चक्कर में हिन्दू वोट उनके खिलाफ हो सकता है, एक शेख के चक्कर में पूरे बंगाल में घाटा हो सकता है, तो ममता ने एक्शन की बात कही. ममता जानती है कि एक नंदीग्राम की घटना ने 2007 में ऐसा तूफान खड़ा किया कि बंगाल में वामपंथी दलों की जड़ें उखड़ गई थीं. नंदीग्राम को मुद्दा बनाकर ममता ने बंगाल में बड़ा बदलाव कर दिया. अब संदेशखाली नंदीग्राम न बन जाए, बीजेपी इसका फायदा न उठा ले, इसलिए ममता शेख शाहजहां के खिलाफ एक्शन लेने को मजबूर हैं. उसके खिलाफ दर्जनों केस हैं, गवाह तो हजारों में हैं, इसलिए हो सकता है अगले चौबीस घंटों में शेख शाहजहां गिरफ्तार भी हो जाए. लेकिन अब देर हो चुकी है. अब ममता की सरकार को कोर्ट में जवाब देना पड़ेगा और ममता बनर्जी को जनता की अदालत में भी सफाई देनी पड़ेगी.
SANDESHKHALI : MAMATA WILL NOW HAVE TO REPLY TO THE PUBLIC
For the first time in recent weeks, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee appeared to be under public pressure on Monday. Even her party leaders have started saying that the local Trinamool strongman in Sandeshkhali, Shahjahan Sheikh, will be arrested soon. Already three local Trinamool leaders – Uttam Sardar, Ajit Maity and Shibaprasad Hazra – have been arrested. On Monday, the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court ordered the state police to include Shahjahan Sheikh’s name in the FIR and said there was no justification in not arresting him. Shahjahan Sheikh is absconding since January 5 when his goons attacked a team of Enforcement Directorate in Sandeshkhali. The High Court asked the government why Shahjahan Sheikh has not been arrested despite serious criminal complaints filed against him during the last four years. The Chief Justice made it clear that no court stay has been granted to prevent the arrest of Shahjahan and he must be taken into custody. It may be recalled that Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee had claimed a day ago that it was the High Court which had stayed ED probe against Shahjahan and police was helpless. Already, there is public unrest in Sandeshkhali. A group of women protesters barged into the house of a local TMC leader Shankar Sardar, who they alleged, was part of the group who sexually abused local women and grabbed land of local people. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh alleged that Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress are protecting Shahjahan Sheikh and are preventing fact-finding teams from visiting Sandeshkhali. On Tuesday, an ISF (Indian Secular Front) MLA Naushad Siddiqui was arrested while proceeding to Sandeshkhali. West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose said, after the High Court order, police must not delay in arresting Shahjahan Sheikh. From an overall point of view, the atrocities in Sandeshkhali would never have come to national limelight, had Shahjahan Sheikh’s goons not attacked the ED team which had gone to his house for probing his role in the ration scam. It was only then that people came to know about Shahjahan Sheikh’s crimes. Para-military forces had to be deployed, BJP leaders visited the riverine area, the High Court had to intervene and only then the people of Sandeshkhali began feeling that they would now get justice and Shahjahan’s atrocities would come to an end. It has now come to notice that Shahjahan Sheikh and his goons have forcibly occupied most of the land in Sandeshkhali. They were extorting money from each family on a weekly basis. Any person refusing to pay ‘cut money’ was deprived of PDS ration. People living in this area were getting ration only after getting a nod from Shahjahan. This strongman’s goons used to forcibly abduct women and girls from their homes and sexually abuse them. The families of rape survivors were threatened not to open their mouth. The local police in Sandeshkhali was working at his behest. When all these allegations started pouring in, Mamata Banerjee and her police did not take any action against Shahjahan and his goons. Soon after, videos of women narrating their tales of woes started surfacing. Even then, Mamata did not take any action. Had Mamata taken action at that time and not labelled the allegations of women as “lies”, had she ordered immediate arrest of Shahjahan, the issue would not have been blown out of proportions. But Mamata tried to give political colour and the issue has now gone out of her hand. Mamata realized that she could lose Hindu voters in her quest to appease Muslim voters. She felt that she could lose the whole of Bengal because of one Sheikh. It was only then that she decided to take action. Mamata knows how the Nandigram violence in 2007 finally dislodged the Left from power and uprooted the Marxists. By highlighting Nandigram, Mamata had brought “Poriborton” (change) in Bengal. Now since the boot is on the other foot, she is trying her best to avoid a Nandigram in Sandeshkhali. She would not like the BJP to take political advantage of the situation. This is the reason why Mamata and her police are now forced to take action against Shahjahan Sheikh, who has dozens of criminal cases against him. There are several thousand witnesses against him. It could be that Shahjahan Sheikh may be arrested soon, but it is too late. Mamata’s government will have to answer questions before the court, and Mamata Banerjee will also have to give explanations in the court of people (Janata Ki Adalat).
किसान आंदोलन : गतिरोध जल्द खत्म हो तो बेहतर
संयुक्त किसान मोर्चे के नेताओं ने साफ कर दिया है कि अब किसानों का आंदोलन लम्बा चलेगा. शुक्रवार को किसान संगठनों ने आक्रोश दिवस मनाया, अगले सोमवार को Highways पर ट्रैक्टर मार्च होगा, 14 मार्च को दिल्ली के रामलीला मैदान में किसान महापंचायत होगी. इस दौरान किसान संगठनों में आपसी दरार भी सामने आ गई. संयुक्त किसान मोर्चे ने पंजाब के किसान संगठनों के आंदोलन को समर्थन तो किया, खनौरी बार्डर पर हुई हिंसा की निंदा की, हरियाणा सरकार और पुलिस के खिलाफ FIR दर्ज करने की मांग की, खनौरी में जिस नौजवान की मौत हुई है उसकी न्यायिक जांच कराने की मांग की, लेकिन साथ-साथ ये भी कह दिया कि फिलहाल पंजाब के संगठनों के आंदोलन में संयुक्त किसान मोर्चा शामिल नहीं हैं. अब आगे क्या करना है, सभी किसान नेताओं को एक साथ कैसे लाया जाए, इसके लिए कोऑर्डिनेशन कमेटी बनाई गई है, लेकिन फिलहाल पंजाब के किसान संगठनों के साथ संयुक्त किसान मोर्चे का राब्ता नहीं हैं. दूसरी तरफ आंदोलन कर रहे पंजाब के किसान संगठनों ने एलान कर दिया कि फिलहाल वो सरकार से कोई बात नहीं करेंगे क्योंकि सरकार किसानों पर जुल्म कर रही है. किसान नेताओं का इल्जाम है कि हरियाणा पुलिस ने पंजाब की सीमा में घुसकर प्रदर्शनकारियों पर गोलियां बरसाईं, जिसमें चौदह किसान घायल हुए हैं, एक लड़के की मौत हुई है. किसान संगठनों का कहना है कि पंजाब सरकार भी डबल गेम खेल रही है. एक तरफ किसानों के साथ हमदर्दी दिखाती है, दूसरी तरफ प्रदर्शनाकरियों की मदद के लिए आ रहे ट्रैक्टर्स और राशन-पानी से भरे ट्रकों को रोका जा रहा है. किसान संगठनों ने कहा है कि भगवंत मान को अपना रुख साफ करना चाहिए. गुरुवार को हमने अपने शो ‘आज की बात’ में वीडियो दिखाया, जिसमें साफ नजर आ रहा है कैसे खनौरी में प्रदर्शनकारियों ने सडॉक की बजाय खेतों के रास्ते आगे बढ़ने की कोशिश की, पुलिस पर हमला किया, उनके हाथों में लाठियां थीं, कुछ लोग पुलिस पर पत्थर बरसा रहे थे. तस्वीरों में साफ दिख रहा है कि पुलिस के जवानों के पास बंदूकें नहीं हैं, वे लाठियों से प्रदर्शनकारियों का मुकाबला कर रहे थे, इस वीडियो से ये तो साफ है कि किसान नेताओं की ये बात पूरी तरह सही नहीं है कि किसान शान्तिपूर्ण तरीके से आगे बढ़ने की कोशिश कर रहे थे और उन्होंने पुलिस पर कोई हमला नहीं किया. कुछ और तस्वीरें भी मिली. खनौरी बॉर्डर के पास कई हज़ार क्विंटल पराली का ढेर लगा हुआ था, जब पुलिस ने किसानों को आगे बढ़ने से रोका, तो बहुत से किसान पराली के गट्ठर उठाकर आगे बढ़ने लगे. इसके पीछे बड़ी प्लानिंग थी. जब प्रदर्शनकारी पराली लेकर पुलिस के घेरे के क़रीब पहुंच गए, तो उन्होंने पराली में आग लगा दी, आग लगने के बाद किसानों ने पानी लगाकर बुझा दिया और फिर उसमें मिर्च पाउडर झोंक दिया. इससे अधजली पराली से भयंकर धुआं निकलने लगा. इस धुएं से पुलिसवालों की आंखों में जलन होने लगी, उनके लिए देखना मुश्किल हो गया, मिर्च मिश्रित धुएं की जलन से पुलिस वालों को भागना पड़ा. जब इस मिर्ची वाले धुएं में फंस गए तो किसानों ने पुलिसवालों पर हमला बोल दिया जिसमें 10 से 12 पुलिसवाले गंभीर रूप से जख्मी हो गए. गुरुवार को फोरेंसिक विभाग की एक टीम, खनौरी बॉर्डर पहुंची. इस टीम ने जली हुई पराली से नमूने इकट्ठे किए ताकि जांच करके ये पता लगाया जा सके कि पराली में क्या-क्या मिलाया गया था. पंजाब के किसान नेता बार बार दावा कर रहे हैं कि प्रदर्शनकारी शान्तिपूर्ण तरीके से दिल्ली की तरफ बढ़ना चाहते हैं, सरकार किसानों पर जुल्म कर रही है, लेकिन जो तस्वीरें हैं, वो दूसरी कहानी बयां करती हैं. मैंने कल भी कहा था कि किसान संगठनों ने जिस तरह की तैयारी की है, उससे लगता है कि वे जंग की तैयारी करके आए हैं. पुलिस अफसरों ने बार बार कहा है कि प्रदर्शनकारी गडांसे, तलवार लेकर आए थे. उन्होंने लाठियों के आगे नुकीले हथियार लगा रखे थे. किसानों के प्रोटेस्ट में वस्तुत: अंदर क्या हो रहा है, समझना और कहना काफी मुश्किल है. रिपोर्टरों को किसान नेताओं के खेमे के अंदर जाने नहीं दिया जा रहा. कई जगह रिपोर्टरों के साथ हाथापाई भी हुई. एक तरफ प्रदर्शन करने वाले किसान हैं, दूसरी तरफ पुलिस. दोनों के अपने-अपने दावे हैं. दोनों के अपने अपने videos हैं. दोनों का कहना है कि दूसरी तरफ से हमला हुआ. जैसे किसान नेताओं का आरोप है कि पुलिस ने फायरिंग की जिसमें एक नौजवान की मौत हो गई. अब नौजवान की मौत हुई ये तो सही है, लेकिन पुलिस का दावा है कि उन्होंने गोली नहीं चलाई. किसान नेता कहते हैं कि कम से कम 14 किसान घायल हैं. पुलिस का दावा है कि उसके 12 जवान अस्पताल में हैं. एक जगह पर किसान आंदोलन में शामिल लोगों का दावा है कि जख्मी लोगों के शरीर से पैलेट्स निकले. पुलिस का कहना है कि उसकी तरफ से पैलेट गन का इस्तेमाल नहीं किया गया. इन सब दावों और जवाबी दावों का मतलब है कि पुलिस और किसान नेता दोनों public perception को ठीक रखना चाहते हैं, जनता की सहानुभूति अपने साथ चाहते हैं. जितने वीडियो मीडिया को भेजे जा रहे हैं, सबकी हकीकत तुरंत जांच कर पाना संभव नहीं है. इसमें वक्त लगता है. जैसे एक वीडियो आज मैंने देखा जिसमें पुलिस ट्रैक्टर्स के टायरों की हवा निकाल रही है, टंकियां खोलकर डीजल सड़क पर बहा रही है ताकि ये ट्रैक्टर आगे न बढ़ सकें. पर ये कहना मुश्किल है कि ये वीडियो कहां का है, कब का है? राजनीतिक दल भी अपने अपने हिसाब से बयान दे रहे हैं. अकाली नेता सुखबीर सिंह बादल ने भगवंत मान को निशाना बनाया, तो मान ने केंद्र सरकार को जिम्मेदार ठहराया. इस भ्रम की वजह से गतिरोध बना हुआ है और सबसे ज्यादा नुकसान उन छात्रों का हो रहा है जिनकी आजकल बोर्ड के इम्तहान हैं. गुरुवार को जब एक किसान नेता ने ये कहा कि ये तकरार और ये टकराव इलेक्शन तक चलेगा, तो चिंता हुई, क्योंकि इस आंदोलन की वजह से इन इलाक़ों में काम करने वाले हजारों व्यापारियों का हर रोज करोड़ों का नुकसान हो रहा है.
FARMERS AGITATION : END THIS STALEMATE SOON
Farmer leaders on Thursday gave clear indications that their agitation will be a long drawn one. On Friday, they observed ‘Black Day’ after a farmer, Subhkaran Singh, died of wounds. Punjab government has announced Rs 1 crore compensation and a government job for his family. The farmers will take out “tractor march” on highways on Monday (Feb 26) and a Mahapanchayat will be held at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on March 14. The farmers are demanding a law to guarantee minimum support price for their crops. Cracks have appeared in the unity among farmer outfits, when Rakesh Tikait-led Samyukta Kisan Morcha leaders said, though they supported the Punjab farmers’ agitation, they will not take part in the stir. The Punjab farmers’ agitation is being spearheaded by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). These organisations have refused to resume talks with the Centre alleging that the government was resorting to atrocities on protesters. The stand-off is on at Shambhu and Kanauri border points of Haryana-Punjab, where thousands of farmers are camping as part of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ call. Videos of clashes between security forces and protesters on Wednesday at Khanauri clearly show that the police were not armed with guns or pistols. They were trying to stop the protesters by using ‘lathis’ (sticks), while the protesters were pelting stones. These videos clearly belie the claims being made by farmer leaders that the protesters were trying to move forward peacefully. In one of the videos, protesters were seen setting fire to paddy stubble (parali), dousing it with water and then throwing chilli powder on the smoke, resulting in policemen rushing for cover to protect their eyes. In the melee, protesters attacked the police force, resulting in serious injuries to 12 policemen. Police officials alleged that some anti-social elements have joined the protesters and the attack on police was pre-planned. A forensic team on Thursday collected remains of burnt paddy stubble from the spot to check whether chilli powder was mixed. Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda has appealed to farmers to exercise restraint and come forward for talks to iron out all differences. On the other hand, farmer leaders have refused to join talks. They have alleged that the atmosphere is not right for holding talks. Meanwhile, reporters are having a difficult time to find out what it is going on in the minds of farmer leaders. Reporters are being barred from entering the area where the farmer leaders are camping. In several instances, reporters have been assaulted. Both the police and protesters have come up with separate videos and it has become difficult for reporters to ascertain the truth. Farmer leaders claim that at least 14 farmers have been injured, while police officials say, 12 policemen have been admitted to hospital. In one place, some injured protesters showed pellet injuries on their bodies, but police officials insist that pellet guns have not been used. Such claims and counter-claims indicate that both the police and farmer leaders are trying to take care about public perception. In one of the videos that I watched, policemen were shown deflating tractor tyres and opening fuel tanks to throw away diesel on the road. Their aim was to stop the tractors from proceeding forward. It is difficult to ascertain the date, time and place of recording of this video. Political parties are making statements in public that suit them. While Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal is targeting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the latter is holding the Centre responsible for the present impasse. The present stalemate is because of this all-pervading confusion. Students are the hardest hit, because they have to appear in board examinations. On Thursday, when one of the farmer leaders clearly said that this confrontation would continue till the elections, it was cause for worry for common people. The longer this agitation continues, it will cause crores of rupees worth loss to thousands of traders and businessmen.
किसान आंदोलन : हल केवल बातचीत से ही निकलेगा
हरियाणा-पंजाब सीमा पर बुधवार को किसान आंदोलन ने हिंसक रूप ले लिया. अभी तक पंजाब-हरियाणा के शंभू बॉर्डर पर तनाव था, लेकिन बुधवार को दाता सिंह खनौरी बॉर्डर पर प्रदर्शनकारियों ने पुलिस के खिलाफ मोर्चा खोल दिया. पुलिस पर पथराव हुआ, पराली में मिर्च का पाउडर डालकर आग लगा कर पुलिस की तरफ फेंका गया, गडांसों से हमला हुआ. इसमें 12 पुलिसवाले बुरी तरह घायल हो गए. किसानों का दावा है कि पुलिस ने उनके कैंप्स मे घुसकर फायरिंग की जिसमें एक नौजवान, भटिंडा के शुभकरण सिंह की मौत हो गई, कई लोग घायल हैं. पुलिस ने गोली चलाने के आरोप से इंकार किया. किसान नेता मांग कर रहे हैं कि शुभकरण के शरीर का पोस्टमॉर्टम एक मेडिकल बोर्ड से कराया जाय और उसके परिवार को फौरन मुआवज़ा दिया जाय. हिंसा के बाद किसान नेताओं ने दो दिन के लिए आंदोलन स्थगित कर दिया है. किसान नेताओं ने प्रदर्शनकारियों से कहा है कि वो टकराव के हालात पैदा न करें, जहां हैं, वहीं डटे रहें. अब दो दिन बाद किसान संगठनों के नेता अपनी नई रणनीति बताएंगे. किसान संगठनों की जिद के कारण पंजाब हरियाणा बॉर्डर और दिल्ली के चारों बॉर्डर्स पर टेंशन है. किसान नेता दिल्ली की तरफ बढ़ने पर अड़े हैं. हरियाणा की पुलिस उन्हें रोक रही है और पंजाब की पुलिस खामोशी से तमाशा देख रही है. पंजाब-हरियाणा बॉर्डर पर जंग जैसे हालात हैं. दोनों तरफ से तैयारी पूरी है. बॉर्डर पर दोनों तरफ भारी भरकम पोकलेन (Poclain) और JCB मशीनें खड़ी हैं. बॉर्डर की एक तरफ पुलिस के हजारों जवान हैं, दूसरी तरफ किसान संगठनों के हजारों प्रदर्शनकारी. एक तरफ पुलिस के हाथ में आंसू गैस के गोले छोड़ने वाली बंदूकें हैं और दूसरी तरफ आंसू गैस से बचने के लिए गैस मास्क, स्विमिंग ग्लासेज और लाठी डंडों से लैस किसान. सरकार कह रही है कि किसानों से हर मुद्दे पर बात करने को तैयार हैं लेकिन किसान नेता कोई जवाब नहीं दे रहे हैं. किसान आंदोलन के चक्कर में पंजाब और हरियाणा पुलिस भी आमने सामने हैं. हरियाणा पुलिस ने पंजाब पुलिस से कहा है कि पोकलेन, JCB मशीनें और मॉडीफाइड ट्रैक्टर्स को बॉर्डर तक पहुंचने से रोके. पंजाब पुलिस ने ऑर्डर तो जारी कर दिए लेकिन किसी को रोका नहीं. किसान आंदोलन की वजह से दो राज्यों की सरकारें परेशान हैं, आम लोगों को जबरदस्त दिक्कतों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है. बोर्ड की परीक्षाएं चल रही हैं, रास्ते बंद हैं, इंटरनेट बंद हैं, बच्चों के माता पिता टेंशन में हैं लेकिन किसान नेता कोई बात सुनने को तैयार नहीं हैं. सवाल ये है कि आखिर किसान संगठन चाहते क्या हैं? सरकार से बातचीत के लिए तैयार क्यों नहीं हैं? दिल्ली आकर किसान क्या हासिल करना चाहते हैं? बुधवार की रात को कांग्रेस नेता राहुल गांधी ने ट्विटर पर एक वीडियो पोस्ट किया, दावा ये किया जा रहा है कि ये वीडियो खनौरी बॉर्डर पर हुई हिंसा का है. दावा किया गया है कि वीडियो में खनौरी बॉर्डर पर किसानों और पुलिस के बीच झड़प की तस्वीरें हैं. इसी दौरान एक नौजवान की मोत हुई. इस वीडियो में जिस तरह के हालात दिख रहे हैं, वो चिन्ता पैदा करने वाले हैं, फायरिंग की आवाज़ आ रही है, आंसू गैस के गोलों के फटने की आवाज़ सुनाई दे रही है, लोग इधर-उधर उधर भाग रहे हैं, चारों तरफ धुंआ ही धुंआ दिख रहा है. ये वीडियो सही है या नहीं, इसकी पुष्टि नहीं हुई है. वीडियो देखकर ये पता नहीं लगाया जा सकता कि फायरिंग कौन कर रहा है क्योंकि पुलिस ने दावा किया है कि उसकी तरफ से गोली नहीं चलाई गई. लेकिन किसान नेताओं ने पुलिस की बात को गलत बताया. सरवन सिंह पंढेर ने ऐरोप लगाया कि पुलिस ने गोली चलाई, गोली शुभकरण सिंह के सिर पर लगी और उसकी मौत हो गई. पंढेर ने आरोप लगाया कि शंभू बॉर्डर पर किसानों के बीच कुछ उपद्रवियों को शामिल कराया गया और ये आंदोलन को बदनाम करने की सरकारी कोशिश है. किसानों की अगुवाई कर रहे नेता जगजीत सिंह डल्लेवाल ने कहा कि सरकार ने आज उनको फिर से बातचीत का प्रस्ताव तो दिया लेकिन सरकार की नीयत में खोट है, और वह किसानों को बातचीत में उलझाकर मामले को टालना चाहती है. असल में जो तस्वीरें शंभू बॉर्डर से आईं, उन्हें देखकर लगता है कि किसान संगठन बातचीत की मंशा से नहीं, पुलिस से जंग लड़ने की नीयत से आए थे और तैयारी भी उसी हिसाब से की गई थी. किसान नेताओं ने तीन दिन पहले सीज़फायर का एलान किया था और बुधवार को समझ में आया कि इन तीन दिनों में सरकार के साथ बातचीत भी हुई लेकिन इसके साथ साथ प्रदर्शनकारियों ने पुलिस के साथ टकराने की तैयारी भी कर ली. बड़ी बड़ी पोकलेन मशीनें बॉर्डर पर पहुंच गईं, ये मशीनें सौ सौ किलोमीटर दूर से लाई गईं हैं. शंभू बॉर्डर पर क़रीब 14 हज़ार प्रदर्शनकारी पहुंच चुके हैं. इनके पास बारह सौ से ज़्यादा ट्रैक्टर हैं, पोकलेन मशीनें हैं, जिसे मॉडिफाई किया गया है, मशीन में बख्तरबंद प्लेट्स लगाई गई थीं, इसके ड्राइवर को सुरक्षित रखने के लिए चारों तरफ़ से प्लेटिंग की गई है. पोक्लेन मशीन के ड्राइवर के केबिन को बुलेटप्रूफ बना दिया गया है. मशीन के टायर्स को शेलिंग से बचाने की व्यवस्था भी की गई है. पुलिस की बैरीकेडिंग तोड़ने के लिए JCB मशीनें भी मंगा ली गई. इन मशीनों को लोहे की मोटी मोटी प्लेट्स लगाकर ज्यादा मजबूत बनाया गया है ताकि जब बैरीकेडिंग तोड़ने की नौबत आए, तो मशीनों को कोई नुक़सान न पहुंचे. JCB मशीनों के ड्राइवर की सीट के चारों तरफ़ मोटी मोटी मेटल प्लेट्स लगा दी गई है. मशीन के पहियों को सेफ़ बनाने के लिए भी प्लेट्स लगाई गई है. पंजाब के किसानों के आंदोलन की स्थिति बिलकुल साफ है – सरकार बातचीत से रास्ता निकालना चाहती है. किसान नेता अब बात करने के लिए तैयार नहीं हैं. पुलिस किसी भी तरह से ताक़त का इस्तेमाल नहीं करना चाहती, पर प्रदर्शनकारी पुलिस को बार बार ताकत का इस्तेमाल करने के लिए मजबूर कर रहे हैं. पुलिस पर हमला किया गया, वो जिस तरह से पोकलैन और जेसीबी लाए हैं, वो प्रोटेस्ट की नहीं, पुलिस को मात देने की तैयारी दिखाता है. ये लोग चाहते हैं कि पुलिस उत्तेजित हो, एक्शन लेने पर मजबूर हों और बात बिगड़ जाएं, ताकि वो सहानुभूति बटोर सकें. प्रोटेस्टर्स ने तय कर रखा है कि वे हरियाणा के बॉर्डर पर हालात नॉर्मल नहीं होने देंगे और सरकार के सामने ये स्टैंड रखा है कि बातचीत के लिए हालात नॉर्मल नहीं हैं. प्रदर्शनकारी किसान जानते हैं कि सरकार मजबूर है, वो न तो फोर्स का इस्तेमाल कर सकती है, न किसानों की खुलकर आलोचना कर सकती है, चुनाव सामने है. सरकार में बैठे लोग किसी तरह की जोखिम नहीं उठाना चाहते, जो लोग किसान नेताओं को गाइड कर रहे हैं, उनमें मोदी विरोधी मोर्चे के नेता भी है, वाम झुकाव वाले लोग भी हैं और इस सारी स्थिति का फायदा उठाने वाले यूट्यूबर भी हैं. सबको मोदी सरकार को परेशान करने का अच्छा मौका मिला है. वो उसे हाथ से नहीं देना चाहते. जब जब सरकार किसानों के साथ कोई पुल कायम करती है, तो परदे के पीछे बैठे ये लोग उस पुल को तोड़ देते हैं. बुधवार को जब सरकार ने बात करने के लिए कहा, तो यही लोग चिल्लाने लगे कि सरकार डर गई, झुक गई, अब और प्रेशर बनाओ. जब सरकार की तरफ से बातचीत का ऑफर नहीं आता, तो यही लोग कहते हैं कि ये सरकार बात तक करने के लिए तैयार नहीं हैं, दिल्ली कूच करो, बात करने का प्रेशर बनाओ. इसी वजह से इस बात की संभावनाएं कम हैं कि इस मसले का समाधान जल्दी निकलेगा. एक बात जरूर है कि पिछली बार किसान आंदोलन को जिस तरह से जनता की सहानुभूति मिली थी, वैसी सहानुभूति इस बार नहीं है. आम लोग इस बात का समर्थन तो करते हैं कि किसानों को अपनी बात कहने का, विरोध करने का अधिकार है लेकिन पोकलेन चलाने का, जेसीबी से बैरिकेडिंग गिराने का, ट्रैक्टर लाकर रास्ता बंद करने का कोई समर्थन नहीं करता. जहां बच्चों की परीक्षा हैं, वो परेशान हैं. इन इलाक़ों में जो दुकानदार हैं उनका कारोबार ठप है. दिल्ली एनसीआर के दफ्तरों में काम करने वालों को कई कई घंटे जाम में फंसना पड़ता है. इन सारी बातों का भी असर लोगों के मन पर होता है. लेकिन जो भी हो, किसानों की समस्याएं तो हैं और समाधान बातचीत से ही निकलेगा, मेज पर बैठकर निकलेगा. दोनों पक्षों को इसी दिशा में काम करना चाहिए. आज तक किसी भी समस्या का हल टकराव से नहीं निकला.
FARMERS UNREST : NEGOTIATION IS THE ONLY WAY OUT
The death on Wednesday of a young farmer Shubhkaran Singh, hailing from Punjab’s Bathinda district, during clashes between police and farmers at Khanauri on Haryana-Punjab border has fuelled tension. Protesters stoned police pickets and threw burning parali (crop stubble) at policemen, by mixing chilli powder. The protesters also attacked policemen with sickles, injuring 12 policemen. Farmers alleged that police fired bullets at them injuring several of them and Shubhkaran died of bullet wounds. Police rejected this charge as baseless. Farmers have demanded compensation and a government job for Shubhkaran’s sister, who is presently a student. After the clashes, farmer leaders on Wednesday night announced that their Delhi Chalo agitation will be halted for two days. Farmer leaders have demanded that Shubhkaran be declared a ‘martyr’ and a medical board should conduct post-mortem to find out the exact cause of his death. Already, there is growing tension on Punjab-Haryana and Haryana-Delhi border points, with the farmers bent on entering Delhi. Heavy duty Poclain machines and JCBs have been deployed by farmers and policemen on both sides of the border. Common people, including students and traders, are facing the brunt of the stand-off. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted a video of clashes at Khanauri depicting explosion of tear gas shells, sound of firing and people running for cover, with the entire area covered in smoke. The video is yet to be verified. Data Singh Khanauri border divides Jind (Haryana) and Sangrur (Punjab) districts. The atmosphere was peaceful on Wednesday, but in the afternoon, clashes began. Police alleged that protesters threw stones injuring several of them, but farmers alleged that central police force men entered Punjab border and fired at them. In Uttar Pradesh, Bharatiya Kisan Union farmers led by Rakesh Tikait staged protest in Shamli, Meerut, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad by taking out tractor march. All said, one must understand that the Centre wants to find a solution to the impasse through talks, but farmer leaders are not serious. Police does not want to use force on farmers, but the protesters are making things difficult by forcinhg the police to take strong measures. The manner in which Poclain and JCB machines were brought from Punjab clearly shows that the protesters had planned to overpower police and forcibly break the barriers. They wanted to provoke the police, force it to take action, so that their leaders can garner sympathy from the people. The protesters have ensured that they would not allow the situation to normalize on Haryana border and their leaders have clearly told the Centre that the situation is not normal for holding talks. Farmer leaders know that the government is caught in a bind. It can neither use force, nor criticize farmers openly, because parliamentary elections are due. Those sitting in the government do not want to take risks, and those guiding the farmer leaders are politicians belonging to anti-Modi front. Several of these politicians are Left-leaning. Some YouTubers are trying to take advantage of the situation and they are pillorying Modi government. They do not want the opportunity to go out of hand. Whenever the Centre and farmer leaders form a bridge during talks, those sitting at the back try to break that bridge. When the government appealed to farmer leaders to rejoin talks, these elements cried hoarse saying that the government has bowed before the farmers. They wanted more pressure to be brought on the government. When no offer for talks came from the government, the very same elements used to say that the Centre is not ready for talks, and farmers must march to Delhi now. There is little possibility of any solution emerging from this impasse. But, one thing is clear. This time, the farmer leaders are not getting the same measure of sympathy that they got two years ago from the common man. People of course do want that the farmers must be allowed to have their say, they have the right to protest, but bringing heavy-duty Poclain and JCB machines to break barriers set by the police, using tractors to block roads, cannot be supported by the common man. Already students are facing difficulties because they have to appear in exams, and business of traders has come to a standstill. Those working in Delhi NCR offices have to face huge traffic jams on highways. All such incidents do have some effect on the minds of people. The issues confronting the farmers can be ironed out only on the negotiation table. Both sides must work towards that end. No problem can be solved through confrontation.
